NEW DELHI, India - It was a concert backed to the hilt by Indian politicians otherwise opposed to "Western culture."

It was Michael Jackson's first and only show in India in its commercial capital of Mumbai.

Amid a row about tax concessions the pop icon landed in the home of Bollywood cinema on October 30, 1996.

It was around 9 a.m. local time and some 10,000 fans had crowded outside the airport, recalled Sabbas Joseph, director of Wizcraft, the company that organized the concert.

Bollywood actor Sonali Bendre, clad in a saree, gave a traditional Indian welcome to him, as a group of artists danced to drumbeats.

The excitement was such that most airport staff abandoned their posts to have a glimpse of the “King of Pop” as he walked out to the cheers of the thousands assembled at the main entrance, Joseph recalled.

He addressed them with the Hindu greeting of "Namaste" from a makeshift podium, before he got into his open-top car and traveled along a route lined with thousands more fans.

Among them were Mumbai's slum kids and the singer would often jump out to cuddle them, Joseph said.

Jackson spent the evening of his first day in India meeting the who's who of Mumbai - from Bollywood stars to captains of industry and politicians - at a banquet.

On his second day he met the slum children again.

This time at poolside in his hotel for a photo shoot that Joseph remembers was for a calendar the entertainer was making in honor of the children of the world.

Jackson also sought blessings from Mother Teresa as he spoke with her on phone, his show organizer said.

But all these activities didn't exhaust him for his big night in Mumbai.

On November 1, 1996, he chose to drive down to the concert venue. No matter, if it meant spending an hour on the congested roads of Mumbai.

Around 20,000 fans packed the stadium as the singer made a spectacular appearance on stage - a touchdown from a specially-designed rocket capsule.

"It was incredible," recalled Joseph. Thousands chanted his name while some fans even fainted. The two-hour show created history in India's entertainment world. Revenues for the sold-out concert were staggering - $1 million.

But organizers say the money is still with the court where a petition was filed against the then state government for exempting the show from entertainment tax.

"Michael Jackson had come to India ahead of India's time," remarked Joseph. "India was a different country 13 years ago."

It sure as hell was – was in high school then...it had just been renamed to Mumbai from Bombay and "Mumbai" wasn't yet part of the lexicon; Azhar was the cricket captain; India was not yet nuclear; there were no malls or multiplexes; no McDonalds or KFC; India was so untouched in those days...

I still remember that. I was around 13 and in my school there was only one topic and it was 'MJ'. I am from a small town in India and we knew very few English singer and the most famous among them was MJ. We used to say that there was no one in this world who can dance better than MJ. I still remember MJ speaking in hindi, 'Namaste hindustaan, main aa raha hoon'. He was all over the Indain media, in papers,TV, radio. I guess it was aired on Sony and all of our family members were glued to the TV. We were mesmerized with his dance moves, singing. I really liked him for his songs, dance and his philanthropic work.....................Love you MJ and may your soul RIP.

I CAN REMEMBER WHEN I WAS A LITTLE GIRL WANTING TO MARRY MJ AS SO MANY GIRLS DID IN MY COMMUNITY. HOWEVER AS WE GOT OLDER WE KNEW THAT WOULD BE IMPOSSIBLE. I WISH HE HAD BECOME TO KNOW THE LORD JESUS CHRIST AND CHANNEL HIS GIFT TOWARD GOSPEL MUSIC. I KNOW THAT WITHOUT A DOUBT HE WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER OFF. IT'S TRUE HIS CAREER DID TAKE HIM A LOT OF PLACES WHERE SOME OF US WILL NEVER GO, BUT LOOKING AT ALL THE EVENTS IN HIS LIFE, I FEEL THAT IT WASN'T WORTH IT. HE DIED SUCH A TRAGIC DEATH. MY HEART GOES OUT TO HIS FAMILY.

MJ never died; he lives with us as long as his music is alive. Long live MJ!

Is this even news? Rehashed stuff from 13 years ago? Come on CNN, you can do better than this. And everyone knows what a hideous disaster the India show was – no point in fondly remembering that train wreck. He was barely on stage!

We Indians really treasure the world artists, specially when it comes to legends like MJ. He was a trend-setter whom we worshipped since long before his visit to India. I was only 13 when he landed here and I can remember many girls had fainted upon seeing him. Such was the euphoria.
I don't agree that his visit was ahead of India's time. I guess most of world pop artists visit my country when they 're off their golden period. But that wouldn't stop my people go crazy and getting fainted on even smallest of the glimpse of their icons. It's our way of showing respect to people whom we 've grown up listening to.

May MJ's soul rest in peace!

Now you see world, God had given you His son again and again you all think He was wacho and was not who He said He was. Prophet has no respect in his home town. Strangers respected Michael Jackson more than his country did. You accused Him of the crime He did not commit. Did that remind you of centuries ago? You see world, this is the second time God had sent His son to you and twice you let Him down.

First He came as a prophet, the world betrayed Him, .Next God said, let me send Him again to entertain the world and make the world feel good through His music and may be this time the world will be just as I pictured it to be. Again, you abandoned Him. Oh! now you will think, it cannot be. Tell me one person in the entertainment industry that has such influence. Have you stopped and think just a little? Why was He so passionate about what He did? He said one time, I was sent to the world to entertain. You all did not connect the dots. Is it a coincident that his father is named Joseph? And is it a coincidence that He was given the Archangel's name Michael? I know, you will think, it is just a stupid fan writing this. Just remember this, God has tried to save the world twice and still you betrayed Him. Did you think God would make it obvious? If so, then the kingdom of God would be so easy to enter. Wouldn't it? I know as cynical and vain as the world is, you will dismiss it as a deranged fan syndrome. God will send Him just one more time and that will be your last chance. So you will never know how He will come down next time. Just remember to treat children well because you never know who that child is.
