RICHMOND, Virginia – Is John McCain - aged 72 - too old to be U.S. president? Not according to his mother - 96 and still going strong.

Roberta McCain: Still going strong aged 96.
Roberta McCain: Still going strong aged 96.

Roberta McCain, sprightly for her years and looking at least a decade younger, has been rolled out as the surprise weapon in the battle for Virginia, making 10 stops at campaign offices throughout the state in the last three days, rallying volunteers for the final push, posing for photos and providing living proof of her son's staying power.

"The age issue goes out of the window when they see his mother," says Paul Galanti, like McCain a former navy fighter pilot and Vietnamese prisoner of war who now chairs Veterans for McCain. "She's 96 years old and I think she's gorgeous. I don't think John McCain is gorgeous but he sure does have good genes."

Galanti is skeptical about polls showing Barack Obama with a big lead in Virginia – currently nine points according to the latest CNN Poll of Polls. "Senator Obama has a six-to-one advantage dollar-wise... he's young, he's hip - I wonder why he's not 20 points ahead."

With five days until election day, Republicans believe they are fighting back and that the gap between the candidates is narrowing. "People don't know Obama," says volunteer "Hanging" Chad Smith. "When they get in the polling booth there will be that hesitation and they will vote for what they know."

"You're not going to put my surname on the internet," another volunteer, Heather, warns me. She fears a Democratic victory on Tuesday would enable them to slash military budgets, putting Virginian defense industry jobs at risk and leaving Americans vulnerable to attack.

"When 9/11 happened the first thing that popped into my head was thank God Bush is in office... We haven't had any more attacks here but I know they're out there, plotting things. I know the economy has been bad this year but seven out of eight years isn't bad."

Galanti says he is confident that Republican-supporting veterans will come out in force Tuesday to back McCain. "Veterans are very influential in their communities. And you know every veteran influences five people. I think John's going to win Virginia and I don't think it's going to be that close."

Somewhere out back Roberta McCain is still posing for photos.

John McCain you only can play the game when you are so dirty with your words/ slurs/Palin. Shame on all of you.. At least Obama started from the bottom. When, except for the war, which I'm proud of you, did you ever wonder if you could pay your bills, sure you can wear $500. shoes, have a rich wife..............you do not even know what tough times are. Use Joe the plumber/ not even his real name or does he pay the taxes. He seems so stupid and you all put words in his mouth. Poor guy does not even know he is being used!!!!!!
Also Fox news makes all of us sick/ so one sided especially Hannity/Laura Ingram/ most times O'Rielly and Fox and friends........so one sided. At least CNN is so much more fair and all our friends agree with me!!! SHAME on you and you call yourselves American's!!
Obama circles himself around the smartest group of people he can find and what a great leader he will be

This essay says:

"[. . .] Paul Galanti, like McCain a former navy fighter pilot [. . .]."

For the umpteenth time: The almost-bottom-of-his-class serial plane-wrecker John McCain III, son and grandson of admirals, was not a fighter pilot but a bomber pilot. Chalk and cheese. His propagandists seem to have persuaded his incurious sheeple that he was cast in the mould of such iconic dogfighters as Douglas Bader and Manfred von Richthofen.

His secret weapon is the terminological inexactitude, and he continually shoots himself in the foot with it.

It is incredible how drowning people can try to clutch to every little straw. The McCain et al are losing momentum. They are bringing all people and co to convince the American people to vote for them.

McCain's mother, God bless her age and health, cannot do much in the White House.

As a European, I'd say teh American people did a mistake voting for GW Bush once, I just hope they do not repeat it again.

John McCain is old, old ideas and his jokes(politics) is old. As a non white South African I believe it is time for new leadership(democrates). In the contary Obama is young , energetic and dont struggle to walk up the platforms to do his speeches. He will make America proud and may he win the elections for sake of the whole world.

Wow, I am amazed at how stupid liberals are. Really, you guys dont even vote or say anything based on facts. It is always emotional with the left. Most idiots on the left think that dems are for the rights of minorities and think they are the party of the people. It is apparent that most liberals are uneducated. The democratic party was and still is the party of slavery. Hey liberal, republicans kicked your liberal butts during the civil war because of slavery. Go to school stupid people. Fact#1, there are more white racisist in the democratic party. Of course when a republican dont want to give hand outs but instead ask that you work for it, then it becomes a race issue. Sorry, last time I checked, affirmative action brought unqualified people into schools and the workforce. Oops, rich people are the ones employing you as well. Oh thats right, we need to punish them for helping you get employed. This is the mental handicap liberals face. The funniest part of all this is that liberals think the country is behind you guys. Well, unfortunately for you, there will be a republican to upset your love fest with Obama this election.

Senator McCain is too old to understand that a hungry neighbour is a more clear and present danger to him than any threat from Iran acquiring nuclear weapons.
He should have allowed his son run against Sen Obama. He prhaps, may have been a better candidate who probably would lok at the faces of his less priviledged collegues and undestand the pains they had to bear due to bad economic policies. of George Bush.

Gerry Jap   October 31st, 2008 953 GMT

McCain Must Win. He is a WAR HERO. SOMEONE WHO WAS IN FOREIGN JAIL BECAUSE OF HIS COUNTRY. PERIOD. If he loses then IT WILL BE MAJOR BLOW TO WAR VETERANS AND THOSE WHO ARE IN IRAQ, AFGHANISTAN ETC. THAT CANNOT HAPPEN IN AFRICA.
LET ME TELL YOU AFRICANS ARE RACIST, NO JOKE.

This is a MCQ test about World affairs for American voters. How much you care for Environment and World peace?, would be proved this time , as in the past we have seen that they were failed. Is McCain really a heroe? pround? Vietname war, Napalm, burnt children and forest far, far away is something to be pround?

Is McCain campaign honorable like he promissed?
Maybe he is plastic heroe made in Vietname to give pround to american people You need all the heroes they can get.
Obama is not a heroe, he dont need be a heroe he is a inteligent and multicultural person who knows the value of the peace. He is a diplomat who believes in words not bombs and invasions.

When someone doesn't have any capabilities himself he turns towards gimmickry. McCain first introduced Palin as a show piece. And now he has brought in him mother. Shame on you!

Obama's going down....................down.....................down...................
Educated – poor fellow doesn't know his own backside from his ugly lying face.
Everything he says is changed to something different the next day and as for his knowledge about rest of the world he doesn't know the difference between Austria and Australia (not that many Demon-ocrats do).
Have a nice day.

On the other hand I also hope and wish that Obama is able to repair the relationship with other countries.

Sen MacCain hoped to win on the strength of foreign policy and security but God who is not partisan works in starnge ways. The economic metdown came upo and made MacCain speechless. Has anyone noticed that these days he has started to say exactly wht Sen Obama has been sayiong from the very beginning about looking out for the middle class andcreating jobs etc. The so-called Joe the Plumber is not even a plumber. If only he knew he was being used.....

These old arguments just won't hunt. The people of Virginia seem to be waking up to the fact that the Republicans have using fear of the unknown to divide them. It is more evident now that the U.S. is facing some real problems and the Republican party is still talking who went to dinner with whom. Obama's message of hope and political inclusion is resonating with those of us who think that America is at its best when we have a greater common goal. The Republican party has used the fear of the American people to abridge civil liberties, obscure functions of government and throw the reputation of the U.S. as a beacon of democracy in the free world away. Don't be fooled America!

If the American people are sincerely looking for pragmatic leadership, they will find one in Barack Obama. The systematic organization of his campaign from party primaries to date, warding off every challenge and coming out stronger is an evidence.

Johnson Okorie.   October 31st, 2008 1037 GMT

In my thinking, judging from the primaries with Senator Hilary Clinton till date. Senator Obama has foresight, sound judgement, ability to organise peoples" skills and he is intelligent. His campaign team"s success thus far, is an evidence of these qualities.

achillois   October 31st, 2008 1040 GMT

The best rebuttal to all of McCain's allegations is truth. Each of his allegations is illogical, and should be repudiated before election day. His labeling of Obama as the friend of terrorists is one of the most noxious of all his assertions, along with the Republican party's claim that Obama is funded by Islamic terrorist groups.

In the first place, Islamic terrorists do not belong to evangelical churches and work in poverty-stricken neighborhoods in Chicago. Indeed, it would be anathema for one to even set foot in a Christian house of worship.

Secondly, terrorist organizations do not need to fund American candidates of any kind or color as long as Republicans sit in the White House, for their work is done for them on a daily basis free of charge. If they were funding anyone it would be the Republican party, for the Republicans' policies make the work of terrorist groups much easier.
Therefore, to fund a Democrat would not be in the interest of any terrorist organization.

This is a brief retort to some of McCain's attempts to smear Obama, all of which can be easily refuted with facts.

For the love of God, why drag your mother into the fray. She is a very wonderful woman. Nothing can be said about her. She reflects the best in every American family But you have to fight your own battle, your war. She did what she had to do as a mother. You should do as a grown man. I will be dammned if I have to run to my mother everytime there is a problem.

SAM SAM   October 31st, 2008 1048 GMT

MC Cann and his group are really confused. What a 96 years old mother of MC CANN has to do with present Americas numerous problem? No more Joe Plummber now, it is 96 years old mother. Haaa!!!!!! Americans are more wiser than all these logic.

Richard R   October 31st, 2008 1056 GMT

As a European, I'm doing my best not to get caught in the Obama hype (it's tough!) and am trying to maintain focus on issues. Obama, a great orator and one of the coolest, albeit young, political minds I've seen from America in a long time, will no doubt retrench America in protectionist policies (how else is he going to save the working classes of MI, Ohio & PA, and keep his promises to organised labour?), distribute the pain of global policing more broadly, and ultimately forge a global economic slowdown over the next decade. Now that our economies are more entwined than ever, we've a bigger interest in America than ever before. A McCain victory, although seemingly unlikely, is much better for the democratic ,free markets of the world. An Obama victory is much better for prevalent but ultimately unpractical liberal idealism. Can we have McCain today and bring back Obama in 100 years when hard-nosed pragmatism is less needed and the world is ready to unite around song and social welfare?

Rey   October 31st, 2008 1109 GMT

It's too bad Senator McCain does not have additional fund raising cash flow to finish out stronger. If he only had large donations from unnamed foreign entities...oh wait, that's Senator Obama.

I just hope America wakes up. We cannot afford to miss the wolf in sheep's costume.

Anne (South Africa)   October 31st, 2008 1119 GMT

Genes comes from 2 people. At what age did McCain's Dad pass away? My dad lived to 82. My mother died at 65. My siblings passed between 62 and 70 yrs. So has McCain all his mothers genes, and what is the avarage between his mothers age and father age at passing?
Never as easy as it looks!

Republican   October 31st, 2008 1121 GMT

On the economy: "Seven out of eight years isn't bad"?

What if all of those years were just irresponsible? Whatever growth of the first seven years was just based on borrowing. By citizens and the economy at large. That is not growth, just as me taking out a loan from a bank (if they give one these days) is not growth.

If you borrow, it needs to bring a return. The basic golden rule is: you save for consumption (like retirement) and you may borrow for investment. You may borrow if the resulting growth can pay for the interest. Otherwise, you are effectively going down. Science and education are sure winners. Public works can be, if they are not just bridges to nowhere. The closer you follow the basic golden rule, the better off you are.

The democrats may be accused of 'tax and spend' but even if true it is a lot less damaging than 'borrow and consume' as has been the method of recent. The US has lived on a bubble of easy credit and the bubble have burst. If the US does not want to go down entirely it will have to make the turnaround of the millennium. The first step is to bring down the $80,000-a-household national debt. That means that for the foreseeable future, money to invest will be scarcer than you would like. It also means that a nation of consumer will have to rebuild their economy, and that means a lot of hard work and little help from Uncle Sam, whatever politicians say to get elected.

There is a lot of strength in the American people. But the last decades have seen it waning. A strong production-oriented country has become a country of obese consumers. BTW, any noticed that the message of the movie Wall-E? ;-)

Obama shows more awareness of exactly this than any Republican. But it will take more than 4 years to repair the damage that has been done over the last 25, mainly by the GOP. Does the American society have the willpower to handle the necessary repair?

Vlansen   October 31st, 2008 1126 GMT

Galanti wonders "why he's (Obama) not 2o points ahead" in the poles. I think I know. I think the US still harbors a fear of blacks, a simmering racism we refuse to believe still exists because we stopped talking about it and buried it beneath "nice speak" in public. But in private, people still say those hateful words, still. If Barack Obama was the same guy, with the same ideas and platform, but was white and his name was Jim Smith, he'd be 30 points ahead.

Pippa   October 31st, 2008 1126 GMT

I do not hink she has the mojo to rejuvinate McCain.
We should know by no that he has had his day.

Now come along Republicans. Brace yourselves for a bruising defeat!

Nothing will stop Obama now!

Tridib Phukan   October 31st, 2008 1143 GMT

Hello Americans, I want to be the first Foreigner to congratulate you all on choosing Mr. Barack Obama as the 44th President of USA.
I am from Assam, a state of India. I have an appeal to all Americans ― young and old, male or female, intellectual or ordinary, blue-collared or helmet-welded, Republican or Democrat (Clintons’ supporters and others) and above all, each and every independent.
Dears,
On listening to debates and discussions on TV and reading newspaper articles online regarding US Presidential election 2008, I have come to a conclusion that most of the people (specifically, participators and contributors) of USA can’t perceived a vision beyond their Homeland. They aren’t acquainted with the world scenario pertaining to energy crisis, environment and the most important of them all, security and terrorism. This is not an exceptional case. The people of every country are like that.
I would rather say nobody is perfect, even God and can solve each and every problem.
At any of the event mentioned above, most of them, the commentators said that Senator Barack Obama is weak in Foreign Policy matters. But I think it’s otherwise. His proposed Policies on Foreign affairs are most visionary, which can’t be imagined staying in Homeland; and vary realistic because Mr. President, George W Bush is practically following them in Iraq, by reducing troops, in Afghanistan, by asking for more allied NATO troops and in Pakistan, by striking inside and even recently with Taliban, by initiating dialogue through Saudis; at the dying moment of his presidency. I wish you will decipher my thoughts properly.
From various observations ―American culture and history, I am bound to believe that most of your old American love war. Senator John McCain was a soldier, he may be a good one but now-a-days, you can’t win a war or in that case even a battle, like the most recent one of Russian with Georgia. Your armed forces Commanders had declared that in various forums recently. A good and brave soldier will never use in his campaign what sacrifices he offered to his Homeland during the wars; a cunning and mean soldier will do. Though it may be look like a little bit harsh, but it is obvious that Mr. McCain is a warmonger and he will finish America if he is elected as President.
Today, America is not economically independent. The present financial crisis in your country is due to this so called American War on Terrorism and against Weapon of Mass Destruction (which is now a big joke), though you are looting Iraq by oil. But what we are concerned about is that this war also affects Global economy of which we are also parts. So, we request you vary heartedly to chose your next President very visionarilly and pragmatically not orthodoxically and dogmatically.
At the end, I would say, Senator Barack Obama has gone passed one of the toughest challenges: Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton; now let’s see where Senator John McCain stands.
Thank you all.

McCain's secret weapon should have been better ideas and sincerity rather than the potrayal of his beautiful and energetic mother. It just shows how misleading a McCain presidency will be – appearance not substance.Take a reviewed look at his VP pick- he hastily jumped at her charm without focusing on her mettle and record.

Don't you all realize that this old guy is so naive and lacks the judgement to pilot world affairs?

Even if genetically he can live for 30 more years his place is not in the white house but in one of his numerous homes.
Goodbye oldie your time is up!

McCain, what is the point if you spend all your time tearing down your opponent and most outrageous negative campaigning, rather than saying what your plans are. I was a republican since Reagan's time. I will be voting Obama this time.

Hey Julie, great "facts" (go ahead and picture McCain making the quote marks on that one). Dixiecrats were pushed out of the Democratic party back in the Civil Rights era. Remember that? I'm voting Whig this year!

Its shamsful for Sen McCain to draft in his mother into the fray. What would he do if he becomes president-to draft in his mother whenever things are going rough, this means that he's not a leader, he's not fit to be president. America you need Sen Obama to go forward, attain leadership position in world after the George Bush ignorant and mischief years. Obama's debates, campaigns, plans and strategies are evident enough to prove to the world the remarkable president he will be. Obama the whole world is waiting to receive you as the president of the United States of America. God is with you; the bad guys will not see you- Amen.

You people need to realize, especially people from other countries, if it was not for America and our bombs what state do you really believe your country or the world (for that matter) would be in? Everyone needs to stop playing the d@mn race card. How will racist issues ever go away if you always play the card? If I dont vote for Obama I am a racist, well I got news for you I am american and I have the freedom that people like McCain have fought for with their lives. You think it is bad here, try going back to your native country and see which is better.

If Mccain had been a good pilot he would never have been a POW! Truth be said

Africans are not racist! How do I know ? If McCain was an African I would never never never have been supportive of him and If Obama behaved like McCain I would have rejected him outrightly from the outset just as I reject white racism and black racism. Let's live in a better world. Good day all

Yes, McCain is a war hero but it doesn't me he has to win the election. During his election I notice that he's using fear as a tool to gain voters. A tool used by our current president regarding the war. This has caused a division in our country regarding race. We have nut jobs out there trying to kill Obama and blacks. At a Mc Cain/ Palin rally a man carrying a monkey claiming its Obama. I have even seen an ignorant man state we have to protect the white Christians. Which really makes me sick because GOD doesn't look at the color of our skin. It's an insult to our men and women who are out there dieing for out country. I pray Obama wins... We need a president that's able to bring unity, peace, and prove any man can do the job (regardless of color).

I don't believe it.This mcain guy is impossible, dragging the old woman about to score cheap points rather than facing the issues on ground.Check the campaign trail so far from calling obama names, tagging him a muslim terrorist, realising and repeating things obama said months ago, unveiling the stupid old fool who is not even a true plumber and the old woman. In Africa where we respect old age, people like Mcain's mother would be sitting at the fire place telling her grand children Stories. What is Mcain's point? some one answer me

Claes Andersson   October 31st, 2008 1220 GMT

Obama protectionist? A bit of old-fashioned mercantilism perhaps wouldn't be such a bad idea. For the developing world for economical reasons (shipping natural resources out and shipping manufactured items in is a bad deal) and for the industrialized world because states, nations and not least cities turn into the social equivalent of deserts. No tax cuts in the world is going to offset the fact that it's cheaper to concentrate production of just about everything into huge complexes located wherever it's cheapest in the world. Everything seems to turn into a dull combination of housing, supermarkets and factories. What communist countries planned is beginning to self-organize in the globalized economy.

Jimmie   October 31st, 2008 1228 GMT

OBA-MA, meaning "OUR KING"in my native language, of UZARUE, in Edo State of Nigeria.
Therefore Obama, is annoited to be the King of America.(President)
Americans, just accept the him as the annointed king from God, because the Bible said that NO WEAPON FIRED AGAINST, GOD ANNOINTED SHALL PROSPER. What is happening in this election today is more than the HUMAN REASONING. GOD has a purpose for the AMERICANS.
Go out and vote OBAMA, your choosing King from Almighty God.

God bless AMERICA.

its quite amusing seeing the discussion based on candidates' policies on economy .. war etc.

Deep down inside most of you know that , come the polling day Americans will stand in a voting booth and think to themselves :
"Am I really going to vote for a black guy?"

Dont forget, only a generation ago black people were beng lynched.. I mean come on !!.. it took 1000 federal soldiers for a hadnful of black kids to go to uni!!!! ..

but then again decades of Hollywood happy endings might mean on 4th November US will "believe in change" :))))

Maybe his mother should be president then. HE IS STILL TO OLD TO BE PRESIDENT. WHAT COMPANY WOULD HIRE HIM AT THIS LATE STAGE IN THE GAME OF LIFE!!@#$

I ask you ... would you want to see you father at 72 year of age made CEO?

SHAME, SHAME, SHAME! McCain making a real fool of US!!!

I believe that Snt Mc Cain does not know what it is to lack in life, sleep hungry, have no school fees or basic medical care. He is a man who 'pretends' to understad these issues BUT in reality, its all hollywood show from his part. He pretends to have American issues at heart whilst in reality, its just the White House he is focussed on and rRepublicans holding on to power so that they can fiannly drwon the American dream and take American to I.C.U!!!!!

My mesage to you Mc cain is this – this race for the white house is over!! for your camp, don't you just get it!!!!! Senator Barack Obama is the next 44th President of the United States of America and i shall hold a very big party out here in Paris to celebrate his landslide victory.

Merci

my dear american friends!!!!
I just want to tell you guys that it amazes almost all Europe how stupid and ridiculous the mccain people work so real patriotic.
If you think about the his slogan "country first".
He keeps thinking its better for america and the world when a 72 years old cancer patient is president compared to a 47 years old, healthy man.what a bullshit!!! he doesnt care about the middleclass, the real problems america is facing. he is interested in making his dream of the presidency true and nothing else. he has been working for that i think his entire life. his runnig clown palin shouldnt be in a position like this. do you guys ever listened carefully what this person is saying? she has experience... WHERE!!! she really thinks you can compare the duties of a major and goernour to the duties as VP? she doesnt even know what she is suppose to do as a VP. GET A GRIP GUYS.
if you really elect tmaccain and palin, the worst ticket america and the world has ever seen,as your president and vp, then america will face way more problems beside war, financial crisis which maccain wont be able to stop, it will also face a standing alone point in the world. your allies will be thinking twice about working with a government like this.
barack obama is black but has the much better package. without any doubt he will be a great president. Iam sure he will win the election.
all europe wants him as the president of the most powerful country (aha because of all this republican clowns not anymore) we are just a bit afraid that, god forbid, something happens with him like JFK.

pathetic! period. The issue here is the economy and the future. Not a throw back to 20th century.Fresh ideas are with "that one".Even if you through in your Grandparents,Mr. MCAIN you should stay out in the cold, not in the warm Oval office.

Jan Doernte   October 31st, 2008 1306 GMT

Regarding the inane "argument" made that McCain is a bomber pilot and not a fighter pilot...talk about grasping at straws!

McCain WAS trained as a FIGHTER pilot, and flew FIGHTER pilot missions. SOMETIMES in war, fighter pilots are called on to drop bombs on the enemy too. If you had a clue this would be obvious to you, but I imagine its difficult when the only history you read is Obama bios. I won't even get into the liberal Belgian's comment about McCain being a "plastic hero". I don't except anyone from Belgium to know what a hero is exactly. They served has a German highway in wartime and have this nice euroland safety paid for by US foreign policy (troops) the last 60 years...We'll just leave it that McCain was TORTURED and STILL did not take a free ticket home, because it was not HIS TURN. THAT is the definition of the word HONOR. Honestly, I do not have that level of honor myself. I would have taken the easy way out and accepted the North Vietnamese offer to go home so they could use it as propaganda.

McCain HAS experience. Obama in contrast, has next to NONE. And people should make their choice accordingly. McCain offers the Republican platform of small government and low taxes, and Obama the reverse (despite his laughable attempt to showcase himself as a tax cutter- either you cut taxes or cut programs. you CANT inflate govt' programs and cut taxes, thats just fantasy).

Also, trying to state that any political party is to blame for economic woes is a very weak argument. Politicans love to take credit when things go up, and blame when things go down, but they actually have next to nothing to say (outside of negative influencing) regarding the state of the economy. If we were communist China THEN its a different story, but we have a Laissez Faire system, whether its Clinton or Bush in the White House.

Really the ONLY reason I find logical for voting for Obama is that he is a COMPLETE novice to national (and international) politics. Which COULD be a good thing provided he knows this. Part of me suspects, (particularly when listening to the grandiose speeches he makes) is that Obama is not humble about his weaknesses and his inexperience will end up resulting in serious mistakes of his administration in the first 4 years IF he gets elected.

WIth McCain I have no such fears. Only that he might die and Palin would take over. However as the point of the article states......He's got good genes....

Sorry John. Too little too late. Not even mama can help you. Anyway, Mama has not suffered four skin cancers, or torture as a pow, mama does not suffer the stress that makes you erratic, unstable and unreliable. Most of all four more years of Bush, due to lack of your own ideas to bring about needed change, is what Americans are rejecting this time round. No thanks, John.

worrell   October 31st, 2008 1318 GMT

alberto kawawah well said.
Mccain seems to be saying everything Obama has been talking about. Tax breaks to companies to keep jobs in america, Energy independence thru technology and clean energy especially with respect to automobiles etc. Now The military wants to talk to the Taliban (Obama – Dialogue) and strengthening troops in afganistan .
Mccain is playing catchup. Obama had from the beginning had a clear vision as to what he wanted to do, Mccain did not and he was only depending on conflict and war, to push his presidential bid.

Once a looser , always a looser. McCain is unsuitable to be president due to his age and brainwashing from the military, american and vietnamese.

This time the stars are favouring O-B-A-M-A Regardless of Roberta"s (His Mother's) Blessing.

cheer up for Obama.

For God's sake why woul the Americans want to surrender and apologise for the wars in Iraq and Afganistan. It is sort of vogue to blame America for everything bad these days.McCain,an otherwis e good candidate may lose the election because of a misjudged president Bush.Remember there hasnt been a terrorist attack on America since 9 11.A republican president has kept America safe by taking the war frontline away from America. If I was not Ugandan I would vote MCcain.

Female Veteran   October 31st, 2008 1326 GMT

I am a conservative female veteran working overseas due to job cuts in the US who is voting for Barack Obama. Although I don't agree with his stance on Gay Rights, abortion and the $700 bailout package, I strongly believe he stands for change. As a veteran, I am ashamed of the atrocities of Abu Grab and Guantanamo Bay (must be closed ASAP). Our country has strayed from a nation of laws to one manipulated by fear leading to the violation of Civil liberties of Americans by the Bush administration and greed on Wall street that has hammered our economy (via deregulation), to the occupation of an oil rich country in the name of freedom. Enough is enough. John McCain does not represent the working class. He represents special interests. Serving our country is honorable but does not automatically qualify you to lead the most powerful nation in the free world. MCain has not stood by our ailing /injured veteran's who are coming home physically and emotionally broken by not supporting programs and benefits which he himself has utilized in the past. McCain is the same as Bush, has lost his way and sold his soul to special interests (Keating five). Obama for Change!!!

When I see an article like this, where an American candidate gets his mother involved to help him to win votes, it again reminds me of how far americans have gone in terms of losing their status as the learder of the free world. I wonder what is being said about the future in the corridors of power in Russia, Beijing, Paris and soforth. But then again, not even Obama can fix that problem. Maybe we should now accept that the future of the world lies with someone like Putin?

Haven't Sen. McCain any SHAME at all; pimping his 96yr old mother??? It's obvious that he is unable to sell his idea to the American people on how to bail them out of the ailing economy and now he's pimping his good old mum for votes!!! This is a great height of desperation!

Manoj   October 31st, 2008 1341 GMT

You know what's the problem with you average americans? You all are content with the one dollar lunch and one and a half dollar dinner. All those of you who are hardworking middle class guys are being daylight robbed by your chenneys and bushes who, and the rich and super rich like them, along with corporate honchos make tons of money at your cost. They devise such policies whereby the world is attracted towards your dollar, give trillions of dollars of loans to your country which are funnelled by these sharks to their companies churning out weapons and keeping the international warring countries busy, make profit out of these, buy more and more ranches and villas and stash money abroad in euros and other currencies in the swiss banks, and fool you into putting your lifetime savings into wall street, from where they again make money by jacking up markets and leaving you with so much paper only good enough to be used for toilet. Haven't you yet got the puzzle right? In US, like in all countries, it's not terrorism, not racism, it's simply about money and the division of the society into haves and havenots. With all its lofty ideals of democracy, liberty, freedom, it's still about the rich robbing the working class of their own country.

Julian, UK   October 31st, 2008 1342 GMT

Mr McCain didnt put country FIRST when he chose Sarah Palin someone who is only interested in answering questions about her favourite movies. He was allover the place before the bail out and could make a dangerous commander in chief. The Republicans need a break so they can get their ideas right and may be they can regain the trust of the people. On the other hand America's enemies should watch out for an Obama Whitehouse, he will have a double edged sword; he can smile and sting u at the same time. Watch Out for the new kid in town.

Julian, UK   October 31st, 2008 1350 GMT

Obama is a straight talker and is not out to find people to have a drink with. This guy is smart and will no doubt make a great leader. People need to stop the fear mongering and the smears against Obama. His campaign rallies brought out Americans from all walks of while the American rallies were filled with hate, fear and ignorance. I pray that race doesnt play a big part in this election cos America is a diverse country and all citizens regardless of race make a contribution to there country.

dennis   October 31st, 2008 1351 GMT

Sad thing about this, I don't think most of us Americans don't realize how badly we have been hurt and disgaced during the last 8 years. The country is in ruins, and has been sucked dry! I pitty President Obama who will inherit this mess. It will take more than 4 years to get ourselves out of the hole they have dug for the past 8 years...TWO wars and the greatest economic depression in history.

WHOEVER IS ELECTED, THAT PERSON WILL NEED THE HELP AND SUPPORT OF THE ENTIRE NATION ... ALL THE PEOPLE. ANYTHING LESS WILL DESTROY OUR COUNTRY!

So she is Mc Cain’s Secret weapon. Would CNN and all the other media that backs Obama please tell us Obama’s secrets we know he has many, because we know who he acquaints himself with.
If the media would come out with Obama’s secrets, then this election would be totally different. There is a saying the media can break you or make you.

Mike Trachtenberg   October 31st, 2008 1357 GMT

Just reading the differences between the tenor of these posts. Can anyone tell me, why the right wing people are so hate filled? The McCain Campaign has fed into this psychosis, by telling their supporters to be afraid, be very afraid. I worry about these people. If you notice a Republican neighbor or friend, acting peculiar after election day, selling their belongings, shaving off all their hair, buying lots of guns, locking themselves up in a cabin in the woods somewhere, please call the tip line at the FBI. I want to make sure these people are watched closely. And the Patriot Act allows us to do that, and the Supreme Court said it was OK, so don't be shy. Your tip off could save lives.

Both died of natural causes – not in battle.

A true man at that age, reflects his life and shares his wisdom with his family, friends...or even writes a book. Every day could be his last day...
And with a woman like Palin waiting for you to fall from the chair...hmm...

MSgt Collins   October 31st, 2008 1508 GMT

Wow, amazing strategy! This must be the first time in history that a candidate has asked for mommas help to get elected! When people challenge John McCain's health and age, his only answer is, If you think I'm OLD, just look at my mother, shes ANCIENT but still ticking!"

And fr the 1000th time, real veterans know the truth of the McCain story, and DON'T support him. He is not considered a hero in the rank and file of our military. By his own admission, and public record, he broke faith with his fellow prisoners, he signed statements against America while in captivity. He gained special favor from his enemy, and for Pete's sake, he even taught English to his guards! John McCain is NOT a military hero... he was simply a less than stellar captive, and was even paid his full military salary while in jail! That's all!

To Julie (the person who called all liberals "stupid" a few posts ago),

Your interpretation of history is not particularly thorough, at best. The Republican Party ideology during the 1850s and 1860s was, for the most part, the polar opposite of the Republican Party ideology today. They were the liberal party of the United States during the Civil War – using government to limit/abolish slavery was a great increase in federal government power – while the Democrats were the more conservative party, fighting for state's rights. Under Lyndon B. Johnson, many party members of the Democratic Party switched affiliation due to the Civil Rights Act, which was indeed a racially motivated maneuver.

All in all, Republicans today would have been for protecting slavery during the civil war, not because of racism, but because they are for state's rights and the limiting of federal power.

Bryan   October 31st, 2008 1516 GMT

I can't wait until Obama steps foot into office. Hold on now, I cannot wait until Obama gets sworn into office. When they initially play the National Anthem and all of America watches as our President of the United States of America – in all of its freedom and glory – stands alone in the non-acknowledgement of our flag. How patriotic (very unimpressive). He will be the very face that represents our country, right at the forefront. And with his hand away from his heart will be looking at something other than the flag. Disgraceful enough, now I'm starting to understand all of the "change" everyone's talking about...I am a registered independent and cannot believe that we are considering allowing this "snake" to run a country that is "united.". Come on people, figure it out already!

Anna J.   October 31st, 2008 1516 GMT

God bless McCain. He has shown the world he values women. A man who values his mother and values the input of women is a man to be admired. Every woman wants a leader to look up to who is kind and compassionate as McCain has shown he obviously is. It's interesting to see how callous Obama supporters are towards women.

Fabio Pellim - Brasil   October 31st, 2008 1556 GMT

This election is the most important happening in years for Americans from North to South and to Europeans, Africans and Asiatic, the whole world is following it and hoping for a change, more than this we hope for a US that inspire the next generations on environment consciousness, action and policies for the global good and peace, conquer new frontiers in science, technology and space, US must lead to unify, to inspire, to create hope. For the last 8 years US represented the opposite, which is not the real US it is just a period of bad choices made by bad group lead by unprepared chief, someone that went wrong on critical moments. I don't see evilness I see mistake, US must open its eyes for the huge responsibilities this big country has with itself and the world, a globalized one that for a long time had a wrong crew on command.
McCain represents the same and he wants fight the past with old ideas, the challenge right now is fight for the best future possible for our world and it's so clear, that man from illinois can initiate this important walk.
We need change, but more that this we need hope and I can't see that in Iraq, Oil and absence of global understanding.
what a Brazilian has to do with, nothing and everything.

Is the media covering the elections in an objective way? I have my doubts. McCain is the better man and America and the world will be safer under his presidency.

Obama´s platform is Obama in the White House at all costs – plain and simple.

liberalism   October 31st, 2008 1721 GMT

To Julie

what does your assertion, that all democrats are rascist, say about the democratic nominee?

would one consider Lincoln a liberal?

do you understand what a liberal is? it's the movement that brought about popular democracy to Europe. it is instilled in the history of the US through its constitution and the bill of rights and premised on the notion that every man is equal and has a voice. not all democrats are liberals and not all liberals are democrats. its a movement whose proud name has been bastardised and hijacked by political hacks and pundits who need to tag and define.

as for affirmative action? don't throw the baby out with the bath water. to argue against an equality of means you need to provide an equality of opportunity. affirmative action is an attempt to provide that equality. its amazing how in the land of opportunity, opportunity is not available for all.

Dear Charles,

Please come to the so much despised socialist Europe. You might want even visit the country that gave birth to the socialism. This country is located in Central Europe and is currently run by the coalition of conservatives and social democrats.
The average citizens of the country enjoy four weeks vacation, socialized medical care, practically free college education, and many more social benefits unthinkable in US.
The citizens of this country enjoy one of the highest quality-of-life in the world and recently three cities of the country were listed among the top ten world’s cities to live in.
The country has the same love affair with automobiles as United States and the country has five different automakers that continue to produce some of the most desirable autos in the world.

I for one do not understand why so many people project their hopes and dreams on Obama, and are absolutely convinced that he will fulfill all of them. I'm not sure where this expectation comes from; he does not have a track record of sterling accomplishment in the Senate, or of co-sponsoring legislation with Republicans.

He'd bring "change", but what does that mean? He speaks well, but so what? You would never see the VP of Public Relations become the CEO of a company, unless it was a Public Relations company. Remember, the Presidency is an Executive position; it is not a deliberative (i.e. legislative) position.

When we interview candidates for a position in our company, we're trained to ask questions like "...tell me about a specific instance when you've had to choose between alternative A and B..." or "...tell me about a specific conflict you encountered in your career, and how you resolved it, or what you learned...". The key word in our questions is "specific". The replies allow us to dig deeper if appropriate. Non-replies earn them our best wishes and a fond goodbye.

Jason Roberts   October 31st, 2008 1912 GMT

The fact that McCain is an ex pilot from the armed forces does not mean he is qualified to be president. having flown fighters before, I am actually surprised he was allowed to fly at all- admitting that he did not like to read flight manauls and all. If I were in his shoes I will never publise that fact -especially considering that he was bottom 5 in his class. It is a shame that he and his lot are using fear mongering to push votes. America needs to remember that the cowboy mentality has had an extremely negative effect on how the world sees America. A new and fresh regime is needed to restore America to its past respect and true leadership. Finally being comfortable spending $10 billion a month in Iraq, instead of spending half of that money to help rebuild America, is such a shame. Sadly we are still ignoring where the real terrorists are in Afghanistan not Iraq. America needs a change, an overhaul, not a replastering.

"I know the economy has been bad this year but seven out of eight years isn’t bad."

The economy doesn't go from good to bad overnight from December 31st to January 1st of the year after. This is the meltdown that's the result of failed economic policies for the past 8 years! That growing deficit and national debt wasn't getting any lower before this year.

USMVT   October 31st, 2008 2103 GMT

Dear Ira,
Your country is a very crucial part of world history. It is beautiful, and yes you do get 4 weeks of vacation. Your freedoms you enjoy and alot of other euorean nations are a direct result of the United States Military. So, your welcome. Yes its true you can have a BWM or Benz probably cheaper than you can get here, But I could care less about that. I as alot of other americans can and do drive a very nice vehicle also. But as for your heathcare...I would absolutley take the heathcare in the US over yours any day. Why is it that people from Europe, and the middle east come to the US for major procedures? As for quality of life...my life is great. I work very hard for my money,am proud of what I do, have a great family, and do whatever I want when I want. Your free education..thats a nice perk to have. that would be a great thing for all. But as far as comparing life there to life here...I don't see it and I've been in Germany several times for extended stays as well as most of europe. Its a nice place to visit. Socialism is not the preferred choice in my eyes, or the eyes of most Americans who take pride in earning what they have. I personaly wouldn't want to live in a place that distributes wealth among people even if they deserve nothing. Capitalism is good. We can all participate in the supply and demand food chain. We can all earn what we want provided we work for it. Keep your 4 weeks vacation. Keep your Benz. Keep your left wing lifestyle. We'll be just fine here enjoying the freedoms we have.
God Bless America

But on the other hand, as has already been mentioned, John McCain's father died when he was 70. So having a 96 year old mother is not a sign that he is likely to live to the same age.
Having seen his mental alacrity (or obvious lack of it) I am seriously alarmed by the prospect of him becoming president.

A man who understand that the strenght of our nation resides in facilitating the accessibility of every citizen to quality Health and outstanding Education! Someone who will unite the country and collaborate with the rest of the world. Let us unmask and dislodge these greedy , selfish, cynical, power thirsty, money plunderers , manipulators and delinquents who have, for 8 long years, kidnapped the White House. We definitely should NOT vote for McCAIN who belongs to the same group of liars and bandits with whom Bush associates himself , and much less for that ignorant provincial PALIN beauty who thinks that her charm will open all the doors automatically for her and that intelligence , competence and knowledge are no requirement for postulating to the office of the presidency .
But , after winning the elction, we shall meticulously check all the billings regarding the wars, for many will have to go to jail for theft and be sent to ride with their best friends...the donkeys in a Texas farm!

The reason he's not 20 points ahead is because of the color of his skin.

Marco   November 4th, 2008 1655 GMT

I don't care what the rest of the world "thinks", obama being elected is "change" that America does not need. He has so many ideas for programs that will cost the U.S. taxpayers BILLIONS. Most of his schemes are in the name of "fairness". Forget about "fairness", if I work hard and I am sucessful, who is obama to tell me that my income is too much? Who is he to spread my wealth around? I'll give to charity as I see fit, not as the government decides. Where is the fainess in a government that can and will take your assets with force?

Suzee   November 4th, 2008 1727 GMT

I will stay up tonight through to the small hours in the hope of seeing a rational, intelligent man voted in as President of the USA.American policies affect us all wether we like it or not.If I were an American I would feel that my intelligence has been deeply insulted by the Republican
party with its fear mongering and patronising.

sc   November 4th, 2008 1745 GMT

I voted this morning, as I have since I was 18yrs old. I must tell you that I am clearly concerned as a "media driven" nation, we have encouraged people to vote based on what they have heard- not by what they have researched. As a middle class family we MUST not get lost in the "Hollywood" crowd. There is more than good looks and being an effective communicator. Can anyone tell me where their candidate stands on healthcare? or small businesses? minimum wage? 401k's? If so, I would love to hear it. I can assure you, I researched all of the issues because they are what is important. This is not a popularity contest -it's 4 years of your life. Go research before you vote-you will surprise yourself.

Middle Class American for McCain

John   November 4th, 2008 1800 GMT

Rosemary....
"at least cnn is fair...." SO FAR FROM THE TRUTH. CNN has placed a crown on Obama since he won the nomination. Watch 4 years from now with a dem president and and dem majority control with no filibusters in the house and we will be no further along than we are today. The dems are a big bunch of talkers and noting will get done, except a raise in our taxes that was not promised....anyone remember George Bush in 1988? Our taxes are going to go up, the only beneficiaries are going to be the lower working class minorities...and the American public has given them the keys to the castle. way to go folks. If you thought you were fixing anything you will be sad to see what you have created.

Chris   November 4th, 2008 1808 GMT

I have taken the time to read most of those threads and there is something that really struck me: all the mean comments are being expressed by people who said openly they will vote for McCain, are Republican people usually that mean or is it because they feel/fear their candidate is going to be defeated? in my opinion, mean people show their limitations and how much not very evolved they are...

David Stanton   November 4th, 2008 1812 GMT

Democrotic idiots. We are bankrupt as a nation but we will rise from it. You cannot create wealth by increasing taxes. Spending must be cut or there will be no money after interest for the debt and Medicare and Medicaid is paid. We pay so much garbage money which we do not even have for absolute idiotic entitlement programs. The Repuplican states starting with Georgia and Governor Perdue got it right. "I dont want people coming into my state and on the third day applying for Medicaid" They are saving so much money and the illegals will have to other states and destroy their treasuries and further bankrupt states like California. MAYBE THEY CAN GO TO HILLARY'S HOUSE OR BARACKS HOUSE AND GET FREE MONEY. I'M SORRY BUT I DONT THINK BARACK OR HILLARY WILL GIVE THEM A DIME AND PROBABLY WILL CALL THE POLICE IF THEY SEE "A SCARY ILLEGAL THAT DOESNT SPEAK ENGLISH" IN THEIR NEIGHBORHOOD.
Regarding healthcare
As a physician I trained in Michigan at a large hospital near the Canadian border. Nurses would cross an international border just to work in our system and they would constantly tell us how bad it is under the socialized healthcare system in Canada. You cannot get medically indicated treatements and procedures. The doctors dont care because it is socialized. THERE IS NO INCENTIVE TO DO ANYTHING. Unofortunately they even pay quite a bit in taxes for this 2nd rate system.

The people of this country don't need an untest fool like Obama. He does not have the experience to command a boy scout troop much less the U.S armed forces

Winston   November 4th, 2008 1817 GMT

rosemary, I'd say you need a hearing aid and contacts.
CNN is a disgrace fox get's it right. Check out the excellence in journalism project.
do you have to have a history ofpoverty to be able to make a difference!
That's nonsense. Anyway Go McCain.

Dave - Calgary, AB Canada   November 4th, 2008 1823 GMT

Marco, US cost on WAR is trillions of dollars and you are worried about yourself and a little Money, OBAMA will win this election.

Kendall Taylor   November 4th, 2008 1835 GMT

I must say, I don't how most of you are willing to argue for any candidate when 80% of you can not type with proper spelling and grammar. It is the first possible judgement of your education and intelligence anyone on a message board can make. If you're so serious about your political beliefs that you are willing to take the time to write them out to a group of strangers, take the extra step and make sure they are written out correctly. Perhaps, then, the intelligent people reading this may actually care about what you're saying and not simply cringe at every line.

For all Americans – make sure you vote and for the person you want to be President. To everyone else, thank you for your comments. But I just hope Americans vote for what is best for the US and not because the rest of the world wants a certain person.

To American Citizens – How angry do you think the rest of the world has been over the "single superpower" name given to the US? How much do you think they would prefer to bring us down a few notches? Is this the best nation in the world – warts and all – or just one of many?

I am an independent. Based on my demographics, I would be considered an Obama supporter. And as a person, I think he is a great man. My biggest qualm is not with him, it is with other zealots in the Democratic Party (and Republican Party too.) Bipartisanship? Hah! No matter what happens, we will get what we deserve for such a divided nation.

This may be the start of the next US civil war. It has nothing to do with race – it has to do with the partisanship on both sides. Whoever wins better start bringing us together quickly.

You get fear tactics from one side and deprecating, demeaning tactics from the other. It makes me sick.

And now, we seem to be more concerned with the rest of the world than with what is best for the US. These don't have to be different. But I don't care what a German, or a South African or any other nation's citizen has to say about whom I should vote for or who we should elect.

Personally, I'd rather have Colin Powell as a candidate. I trusted him and still do. But that is not an option.

But to the rest of the world, don't think whatever happens will bring us down forever. No matter who wins. The whole world dismissed Russia after the Soviet Union collapsed. But a real leader like Putin came around and look at them now. Whether you like Russia or not, you can't ignore them anymore.

We need a real leader – an American Putin. Perhaps whoever wins here will turn out that way. Otherwise, time to start thinking about 2012.

JD   November 4th, 2008 1904 GMT

I think it is very interesting to hear you people from other countries commenting on an American election. The world has passed it's judgement on America and has sent it's "hatred" in the form of terrorism. Both Verbal and physical.
Here are some predictions for the "new World"
* A Russian solution to the Isreali-Palestinian Problem
* A Russian land grab of the old "Soviet Union" regions
*Third world hunger like you have never seen before
*Nuclear proliforation throughout the Middle East
*A new War in Iraq after United States" retreats
*A new Russian Presence in Jerusalem
*America becomming a fortress Nation

I personally would rather have a man like John McCain in othe office of the President than a young man who has grown up without a father.

There are instincts within a man that can only be brought out with the teaching of a "father". Obama will lack these and it will cause weakness in a critical time when strength is needed.

K   November 4th, 2008 1911 GMT

His mother looks like the Crypt Keeper!

Ken   November 4th, 2008 1944 GMT

Talk about winning at all costs. But pulling the plug on your grandma the day before the election to get the sympathy vote? That's going a bit too far.

David   November 4th, 2008 1950 GMT

These comments clearly illustrate why Obama will be an exceptionally good president.

Republicans are all about division; if you have different views than them, you must be "an idiot", "uneducated" or simply "un-American".

Folks, that kind of thinking is, itself, un-American, it has deeply harmed our country, and it's why the Republicans are finally seeing their chickens come home to roost in the form of Obama's lead in this election.

You can respectully disagree with your neighbors, but if you hate someone just because they think differently, then you are living in the wrong century and the wrong country. The United States became the most powerful country in the world by being one of the most tolerant, accepting, and forward-thinking countries....a place where all sorts of different people can co-exist and succeed if they are willing to just work hard enough.

The Republican philosophy of condeming different views has no place in the 21st century. As such, although I love to see all the conservatives on here bashing Obama and those who support him, I am sitting back smiling at the fact that these days of hate are coming to an end, starting today.

Michael   November 4th, 2008 2003 GMT

This is evidence of yet another blunder in McCain's campaign.
Of course his mother ( or he ) won't run the government, but her age and vivacity speak to genetic traits in his family I was unaware of until today. Traits that quiet the question regarding his age just a bit.
But then there is his judgment..... Sarah Palin, for example.

Ralph   November 4th, 2008 2010 GMT

I am staggered by the hate and "isms" that seem to be at the heart of each comment. If you are for Obama, then McCain is stupid and out-of touch. If you are for McCain, Obama is a nasty socialist and naive.

As for the "isms", I am most struck by the degree of agism. I hardly think that being a little slow in getting to the podium instead of bounding up the steps disqualifies one from having a position of responsibility. The younger candidate suffers from being considered too young and too inexperienced

It is frightening to read comments devoid of reason. From such things tyrants rise.
