A first reaction? Joe Biden is looking at the moderator much of the time and talking policy – sometimes a lot of policy.

Sen. Joe Biden and Gov. Sarah Palin.
Sen. Joe Biden and Gov. Sarah Palin.

Sarah Palin is looking at the camera far more, and speaking simply and directly to viewers. She seems at ease at the podium and comfortable with details. She also seems to move the subject to where she wants it – answering questions with the information she wants to present.

She is the new, less experienced candidate – remember? She's doing more than holding her own; I score it for her so far.

I hear you, but I feel like Palin has just memorized her responses. She doesn't seem to be able to "flow" with the debate. But, yes, Biden needs to look at the camera a bit more.

Steve in Osaka   October 3rd, 2008 135 GMT

Stranded here in Japan, unable to get any streaming live video to work. Give us more Jonathan, and let us know how many minutes into the debate you are referring to when you comment.

Cheers

jana   October 3rd, 2008 144 GMT

Let's not forget that Palin is a former model and is trained to look into the camera. Let us also not forget that Biden has a speech impairment. Palin since she's been on in the race ( 5 weeks!) says only what she knows. If she doesn't know it she either recycles her words or she just simply doesn't know. They are timed so she will come up with something to say.

Khairul   October 3rd, 2008 145 GMT

Well, Palin talk more on her state rather than talk abt the future of whole Americans. I don't think she is good leader for Americans & also helping to put our world to be safer.

Grant   October 3rd, 2008 145 GMT

Well scored Jonathan, I am with you on that

Peter   October 3rd, 2008 146 GMT

Steve,

I am also in Japan and cant get CNN live. Try MSN*C website.

James   October 3rd, 2008 147 GMT

Funny...I'm watching the same debate, and yet it seems at though Palin has been getting worked. See seems more comfortable making eye contact to the camera, but seems a little uptight and 'scripted' maybe??

Thomas   October 3rd, 2008 148 GMT

Palin is not debating at all, she's just reading a speech, absolutely pathetic....

Angels   October 3rd, 2008 150 GMT

Palin is either reading notes, a telepromter or she has memorized certain comments (written by advisors) that contain points that she was told to bring up regardless of the question. She is clearly an airhead, pumped up with hot air. Sorry, I'm not buying into this show. Yep. you betcha folks!

Palin Stupid?   October 3rd, 2008 153 GMT

Im sorry but Sarah Palin is Dumb. I feel bad for her. She is killing herself and embarassing us...

joan hutchins   October 3rd, 2008 154 GMT

Every day I pray that Americans don't elect another person who can't say "nuclear". How scary that is!

Cynthia   October 3rd, 2008 155 GMT

I'm watching the debate from S. Korea. I don't think that it matters much who Biden is looking at. The words that are coming from Palin seems "scripted" and almost accusatory. She just seems out of her league here. Biden may have a speech impairment, but he seems to know what he is talking about.

vikram   October 3rd, 2008 155 GMT

Live CNN in India.. hurray!

Biden didn't look at the camera only in the first few minutes – he's done a lot of that in the last 20 minutes.

Palin continues to puke out her memorized points on everything. I was almost waiting for Biden to say 'which 94 times' when she mentioned Obama had voted 94 times to raise taxes (or 97..)

Also isn't Palin smiling too much?? It's almost like she were trying to cover for dishonest un-original answers!

Btw how do you view the agreement of both candidates on Gay marriage?

Great work Jonathan.. love your program!

Mary Moberg   October 3rd, 2008 156 GMT

I think Biden has won this one! Did you notice that Palin must read from her script to answer the questions? Apart from that her diction is so limited, and i am tired of the use of bipartisan.. bla bla.

Nori   October 3rd, 2008 158 GMT

There were many occasions when Palin recycled points about her achievements as Governor of Alaska when the question was something else. She had been coached not to have moments of silence or hesitattion like in her interviews – just keep spewing out the same old things and hope to convince the American people!

Betty   October 3rd, 2008 158 GMT

Palin stupid or Plain stupid? Which one is more defining?

samantha   October 3rd, 2008 159 GMT

I dont find "adorable" Sarah Palins "cutesy-charmsyy" posture. she might be president one day., for crying out loud,.I can almost picture how negotiations could be like...

J D   October 3rd, 2008 201 GMT

I love Sarah – but someone PLEASE tell her it's NU-CLEAR not NU-KYU-LER! There is no vowel between the C and the L!!!!!

Sharon   October 3rd, 2008 202 GMT

I am giving up watching our Canadian Leaders debate for our upcoming Federal election to watch the VP debate. I think Palin is
holding her own and please give her some credit. If she is reading
notes, other than the ones she's making during the debate, reading from teleprompter, then so is Biden. She may not have Biden's
experience but she's proving she can keep up with him.

vikram   October 3rd, 2008 202 GMT

Biden: 'George Bush's.....George Bush's.....George Bush's..George Bush's ' – that was funny :-)

Palin: 'Can I talk abt Aghanistan too there'.. OR 'ooooh wait, i just realized that Point #23 in my written script also has vague links to the question so let me use that too!'

Ron Owings   October 3rd, 2008 203 GMT

It appears that Gov. Palin is like a kid sent to the grocery for a few items for mom and dad. "Don't you dare come back home without making these points verbatim." Plain needs to learn how to debate, or even discuss serious topics. She is ignoring the questions, which appears that she simply can't answer the tough ones.

And for the love of God, could we get a Republican who can pronounce correctly the word, "nuclear?"

Abigail   October 3rd, 2008 203 GMT

I really don't like Sarah Palin, but she is doing well on camera.
That doesn't mean that any of what she is saying has actually been thought by herself.

Janice   October 3rd, 2008 204 GMT

Palin is doing better than expected, but it helps that the expectations of her performance were the lowest possible. Biden actually gives answers about policy with details. She says things like "we need to bring freedom" and "I did x in Alaska". She just doesn't seem to have the necessary experience to be a real leader.

She keeps saying "kinda" and "NucUlar". Makes me question the Alaskan schools.

Georgemia   October 3rd, 2008 204 GMT

I think that Sarah Palin looks much better than she did with Couric, and she looks poised. Yes, she's reciting scripted answers, and not making any policy statements, but she's good at looking at the audience and connecting to the audience.

In terms of information, Biden is stronger, but I think McCain/Palin defenders are probably happy with her performance.

CL   October 3rd, 2008 204 GMT

Sen. Biden is clearly more educated on Foreign Policy and all other issues versus Gov. Palin. She can read well and throw stones but has no substance to her comments.

Mary Moberg   October 3rd, 2008 205 GMT

Can someone please tell Palin to stop using Alaska to explain foreign policy?

Robert Vaquero   October 3rd, 2008 205 GMT

It's sad to see Palin trying to attack Biden, but her arguements lack her own feelings and opinions and they lack substance. Palin is just reading memorized key points. I am sorry I am not convinced by Palin.

amb   October 3rd, 2008 205 GMT

She is a trained monkey, nothing more. No woman I know wants her to represent women in the United States, in executive office. If she had a shred of love for her country, she would have stepped aside.

Tischa   October 3rd, 2008 205 GMT

I think Gwen Ifill is folding under McCain's "book" pressure. She's not making them stay on the question as much as I'd like. This allows Palin to side step the issues she didn't study.

Glenn Liddell   October 3rd, 2008 206 GMT

She is spouting pre-scripted sounbites, hasn't answered a single question directly. It is emabarrassing. Biden is toying with her like a cat toying with a mouse.

Vicky   October 3rd, 2008 207 GMT

watching this in Grenada and I am a bit shocked by the aggressiveness of the Governer. I am glad he is not being condensending by addressing his critic to MaCain. Good move Biden.
he was the underdog in the loss loss situation if he attacks he was being agressive if he did not he was being condensending. mmhh

As for Palin can she talk about US of A not Alaska. Afterall most of the things she did in Alaska are not going to be implemented under MaCain What will she do for the country?

By the waty what about the inegenous people of Alaska. The ipswich I believe?

Chad   October 3rd, 2008 207 GMT

Palin isn't in control, she is more focused on answering questions she has prepped for. This leads me to my second comment. Gwen Ifill(sp) needs to take better control of the debate, and force the candidates to answer the questions. Biden should stop smiling and looking over confident.

Fred   October 3rd, 2008 207 GMT

I've been on the computer while watching the debate so I may have strayed a bit, but has Palin actually answered one single question?

Steve   October 3rd, 2008 207 GMT

dumb dumb dumb......Sarah Palin is annoying and dumb.

Alysia   October 3rd, 2008 207 GMT

Biden is quick and well-prepared. I'm impressed by his confidence, and a little insulted by Palin's cutesy approach. Anyone who uses "like" in the manner of adolescents is not an appropriate VP candidate. Honestly...

Derek   October 3rd, 2008 208 GMT

If dear Sarah would stay on point this might be more of a debate. Very sad to think that this lady could be President one day. People wake up this is not a person with substance.

GG   October 3rd, 2008 208 GMT

Palin is not stumbling or stuttering here....however the bar has been set so low for her!! Still Palin rhetoric is mainly high level prepared lines..at times not relevant to the question asked.....vs the command of the issues and credibility exhibited by Joe Biden,

Jake   October 3rd, 2008 208 GMT

"She also seems to move the subject to where she wants it – answering questions with the information she wants to present."

In other words, she's not giving a single answer to the question that has been posed to her, but instead is rambling on with the same talking points her campaign has crammed into her head over the past few days. Biden is the only one actually answering the questions and providing semi-coherent responses. Seriously, has our level of political discourse fallen this far?

The McCain camp saw the Couric interviews and saw what happens when Palin attempts to respond to a question with her own answer. Hence they told her to ignore the question and serve up any old talking point as long as it is remotely related to the topic at hand. It's ridiculous.

Fred   October 3rd, 2008 209 GMT

Great answer to the heartbeat question Biden. This guy is really showing is what the Obama Biden ticket is really about. Spectacular display of real politics! Truly remarkable.

Uncommitted Voter   October 3rd, 2008 209 GMT

Palin appears to stare at the camera when she is trying to memorize what her camp trained her to say. She as only answer 1 question that she has been asked and has failed to prove that she actually knows anything about government versus being a soccer mom. She appears nervous and can't answer the questions at all. I'm disappointed that McCain would even put her in this situation. She lives in Alaska and couldn't answer the question of what is the cause of the environmental issues we face. I was an uncommitted Republican before this debate, but the fact that McCain would choose someone just to win the election and not some that actually knows what she's talking about shows a lack of respect for our country. My mind is made up.

sparky   October 3rd, 2008 209 GMT

Palin has NOT answered one single question. She is playing to the camera and dancing around EVERY question. Pathetic! Folks, listen to the questions and the answers and vote on issues ...not a pretty face and marketing techniques which is all SHE IS!!!!!

Mary Moberg   October 3rd, 2008 209 GMT

God forbid that McCain should be president and dies in power for Sarah to take up command! Then America should be ready for war with Russia, Korea, Iran

Steve   October 3rd, 2008 209 GMT

If she says "mavericks" one more time I'm gonna fall off my chair.

Jürgen   October 3rd, 2008 210 GMT

I´m convinced: Palin must be reading from a teleprompter. I´m no VP candidate, but it can´t be that difficult to actually answer the question being asked, instead of recycling memorized lines.

john   October 3rd, 2008 210 GMT

In reading the blogs I am amazed at how pathetically bitchy American left wing women are when confronted by a female of intelligence and good looks. Sandra Bernhards all.

stephanie   October 3rd, 2008 210 GMT

Palin is avoiding questions...she isn't in the same league as Biden. She also has an annoying habit of making condescending noises in the back of her throat while trying to disagree with Biden. Please stay on track and answer the questions with some knowledge–enough of her hx in Alaska!

octavio torres   October 3rd, 2008 210 GMT

Too much reference to daddy. Instead of I think this and that, too much citing their boses. Hey guys, ¿are you the ones to take charge of the USA in case your dady dies? God help us!

If I were to vote for a VP I would go for the lady – eventhough I like Obama.

From Mexico City

Uncommitted Voter   October 3rd, 2008 210 GMT

Palin appears to stare at the camera when she is trying to memorize what her camp trained her to say but look at Biden on issues she know which is energy...energy.." can we go back energy" is her response to everything. She has only answer 1 question that she has been asked and has failed to prove that she actually knows anything about government versus being a soccer mom.

Lester   October 3rd, 2008 211 GMT

Biden is not being truthful. He supported McCain in the war. Biden has lost his credibility. Palin is working Biden .

Rob   October 3rd, 2008 211 GMT

Man, being a democrat I can admit I'm a little biased. But Palin sucks, she's like a pretty robot. It seems like the Republicans have loaded her up with buzz words and phrases in hopes that people will be a little dazed by her looks and only hear the buzz words.

And it took her less than 5 minutes to bust out with a soccer mom comment. So predictable, this woman would be a heart attack away from the president's desk!

kanip   October 3rd, 2008 212 GMT

I am living abroad and using c-span.org to watch the debate. Palin is doing a great job connecting to the people by looking at the camera, smiling, and using everyday language. I am happy to see that both of them have prepared and seem to be doing their best.

alan stephens   October 3rd, 2008 212 GMT

watching the debate here in ireland and i hope and pray that palin is never president of the usa , as she has no idea how to debate. however she is a good politican as she never answers a question

Steve   October 3rd, 2008 212 GMT

This stupid "hockey mom" routine is making me sick.....lordy...get this woman off my TV!

joan hutchins   October 3rd, 2008 212 GMT

Agreed with Tischa that Palin sidesteps questions, but that seems to be what politicians do, generalising, of course. Another point is, the phrase "foreign policy" seems to share meaning with the word "war". When did that happen? Is that why the world views America with suspicion?

Mary Moberg   October 3rd, 2008 212 GMT

Do u mean she was taught? Educated? By whom?

andrea   October 3rd, 2008 212 GMT

Drill Baby Drill! this is crazy ... how can she talk about a safe environment when her party has the worst history in protection and conservation. She is quick but not deep, she defends only what she has been told to say. She has a righteous attitude which is worrisome for someone in leadership. Palin and McCain are a continuation of the Bush fiasco. I hope that people see beyond the "small-town girl show" and vote for Obama-Biden.

Fred   October 3rd, 2008 212 GMT

Palin – hypocrisy at its best! I can't believe she can say some of this stuff with a smile on her face.

Abigail   October 3rd, 2008 213 GMT

Say it ain't so joe there ya go again. Yehaw put the road kill on the barbee

Maamun   October 3rd, 2008 213 GMT

Jothan, how can you give it to her soo far, its embarrasing to see someone who might one day be the president if anything happens to mccain dodge qns that american's want to hear from that other qns that she was coached on.... this is too painful to watch , she is following her notes on her paper, nit debating

S Das   October 3rd, 2008 213 GMT

Biden is rock solid on his facts. Very easy to visualize him playing an important role in the Obama administration and stepping in as Pres should something happen.

Palin has been coached well with fluff and joe six-packisms such as gosh darnit...., oh man...

J Locke   October 3rd, 2008 213 GMT

Does anyone else notice Palin winking so much?

Samuel I   October 3rd, 2008 213 GMT

I'm watching this from the UK (I'll pay for it in the morning) and I'm feeling sorry for her. So much so soon. She is a politician, sure, but she definately does not have a clue. She is fitting her answers into a script, sad. Palin & McCain?? I'll pass

Mary Moberg   October 3rd, 2008 213 GMT

We gotta rampe education up? what is that?

Lorne Oliver   October 3rd, 2008 213 GMT

Palin: "Full of sound and fury, signifying nothing". She speaks well, looks good, and like a bottle of perfume, is full of nothing but nice smelling air. Stop pandering to the lowest common denominator of American society. No one wants a Hockey Mom running the most powerful country in the world. After eight years of that other "Joe Six Pack" let's have someone with a shred of intelligence.

Dunx   October 3rd, 2008 214 GMT

>She seems at ease at the podium and comfortable with details.
............................................................

Gwen Ifill, right?

Tell me you don't mean the faltering, pre-programmed, robotic performance of Sarah P?

Mala   October 3rd, 2008 214 GMT

I'm curious – can Palin just chose to ignore the questions asked and answer her own memorised political stump speech – and impress analyst and commentators? why even have a debate then?

This whole thing of "connecting" with the people is hollywood media hype. The whole world is watching you because of the financial crisis and the mess in Iraq – and your leadership boils down to a pretty face who can dodge questions and not get taken to task on it?

God help us all!

Janice   October 3rd, 2008 214 GMT

She keeps saying 'don't look back at the Bush administration' but I almost get the feeling she'd like everyone to forget that the current economic and foreign policy disaster happened on the Republican watch.
I agree Biden is looking very polished.

kadyn   October 3rd, 2008 214 GMT

She can't say "nuclear" for heaven's sake! I hope this election isn't about who looks more into the camera Jonathan!

john   October 3rd, 2008 214 GMT

To the Uncommitted Voter , You have been registered Demmocrat all your voting life . Pull the other one.

CL   October 3rd, 2008 214 GMT

I pray that the Americans don’t elect anybody so airheaded as Palin as their next VP. We really don't care what she has done in Alaska.....it is not center of the world!

Biden did ok – at least he came across as really knowing what he was talking about.

As an European I'm really frightened just by the thought of Macain & Palin in the white house – making the world a less safe place.

Max   October 3rd, 2008 214 GMT

we are watching the debate in Germany. Its 4.08 am here btw :)

1. Palins Adorable act is getting on my nerves. She does not have answers to questions. She is dependent on what she has been coached to say – criticize Obama, Talk about energy. criticize Obama, talk about energy,criticize...you get the point.

2. I think the moderator is not pressing Palin to stick to answering question asked.

Brian   October 3rd, 2008 214 GMT

Wait, you're quoting Palin's ability to avoid answering the questions as a reason she's winning? Seriously? Is that what we want in a Vice President, the ability to avoid responding to anything?

nelo   October 3rd, 2008 215 GMT

Watching Sarah Palin in the debate is like watching, the questions and answer of a beauty pagent. Is it more of beauty than brains in american politics.

Soto   October 3rd, 2008 216 GMT

Palin has no substance and when it suits her, she simply ignores the content of the questions and Biden's statements. It's sad that CNN would fail to see through her 'style' and not notice the utter absence of rigour and depth to her answers.

James Radvan   October 3rd, 2008 217 GMT

Palin is doing well in terms of confidence and preparation. She has certainly not been the slow motion train wreck that many were expecting. However when one examines the detail of her remarks, it is largely soundbite-driven, often inaccurate and rarely actually answering the questions asked.
Having come from such an underdog position, Palin may well be viewed as the "winner" of the debate simply by virtue of having not imploded on stage; but in terms of inspiring confidence in a running mate who could actually make a positive contribution to the administration, Biden has done a much better job.

zazou   October 3rd, 2008 217 GMT

From the uk
Biden is the guy

Guido   October 3rd, 2008 217 GMT

watching the debat at 4am in the Netherlands..am pleased to see Joe Biden. McCain/Palin come from the same party as Bush/Cheney..the Republicans.

It is time for serious change: war in Iraq, cooperation with Europe instead of the right to be the worlds cowboy. Under George Bush the American brand has been damaged very badly with a potential loss of power in the world; look at Russia.

Joe Biden is clearly a balanced candidate who could be president also. Sarah Palin is not prepared to work on the world stage, so let her ripen some more for 2016 or so.

Guido, the Hague, Holland

Janice   October 3rd, 2008 217 GMT

Point for Biden on the Cheney comment.

AD   October 3rd, 2008 217 GMT

The Stepford Candidate!

The scary thing is... this is probably going to play well to a certain demographic. Watch McCain's number go up afterward.

Bhatula   October 3rd, 2008 217 GMT

People are kidding if they think Palin is on top in this debate, she is getting owned by Biden.

Ashish Nagar   October 3rd, 2008 218 GMT

A debate is a two way dialogue between two sides on a particular point of contention. In this case the lady is reciting from the prompter in her head!!!!

John Stewart and Saturday Night now have jokesfor the next 30 days......Yo yo Sarah Palin!!!!

squeegee   October 3rd, 2008 218 GMT

I was worried in the first 2 minutes when Biden was looking mostly at Gwen... but I'm thinking he did it on purpose. You could see Palin noticing that and smiling to herself... and then Biden turned it on. She is strong, but Biden will win this. And thank God for that!

Greg   October 3rd, 2008 218 GMT

Sarah Palin's performance is pretty woeful. The debate itself has been well run with appropriate questions, but Palin's answers on occasion don't always fit the questions.

Biden portrays good knowledge of foreign policy, foreign politics and the domestic political discourse. Good performance so far.

Palin has had a few cringe moments. "We both love Israel" woohoo.

She sounds like a cheerleader. She's just awful, she looks like a stage dummy with a stupid fake smile on her face.

sparky   October 3rd, 2008 218 GMT

Palin is the queen of avoiding answering questions... that is why McCain chose her and why she is good at speaking for the Republican during this crisis. Having McCain involved in helping clean up this economic mess that he heartily helped to create with his deregulation (Mr. Deregulation) Is like the arsonist helping to put out the fire!!!!

Janice   October 3rd, 2008 218 GMT

And by the way, I'm a registered independent and I don't hear anything new from McCain/Palin. If there's one thing this country needs now, it's something different.

Ben Morgan   October 3rd, 2008 218 GMT

Of course Sarah Palin's speaking simply. That's all she's capable of doing. Seriously, the rest of the world is laughing their backsides off at her. And we though Dubya was stupid. She makes him look like Einstein.

Random Canadian   October 3rd, 2008 219 GMT

Are you kidding me? Are we watching the same debate? Gosh-darn it, Palin looks like a heck of a dog-gone idiot. I am a little scared for my American neighbours (yes, that is how we spell it in Canada). The whole world is watching, and I hope to God that Barrack Obama gets into office to help heal your ties with the rest of the world.

Doug   October 3rd, 2008 219 GMT

I think you have to get past your personal bias and ask yourselves who is using this debate best. It's not about the policy debate. It's not about facts. It's not about anything at all EXCEPT connecting with the audience. Now, which one is doing that better? Answer that correctly and you get your winner.

Pat   October 3rd, 2008 220 GMT

You're scoring it for her so far because she is not as bad as might have been expected?

Now there's a campain ad for ya: Palin – Vote for her because she could have been worse...

abigail madden   October 3rd, 2008 220 GMT

Somehow, Sarah Palin's seductive little winks and visible panty line do not strike me as very Presidential. But maybe that's just me.

Maamun   October 3rd, 2008 220 GMT

Palin guff of all guffs "The iraqi govt and Talib hahaha, are working with the US gov't" OH GOD, someone switch off the TV, How cld McCain do this, she has no clue what goes on around the world ....

Yes. She had serious training/coaching in presentation. If you are choosing the winner based on the body language and likability..... you are in trouble...

Shirley   October 3rd, 2008 221 GMT

Jo Bidden clearly demonstrates an extensive knowledge of politics and foreign affairs, i trust him. Sarah Palin seems to have all the depth of a contestant in a beauty pageant along the theme of 'how I would change the world, very well rehearsed, ...do I trust her? no. Nor should you.

M Smith   October 3rd, 2008 221 GMT

she is pathetic, answer the damn questions!

Mahlon   October 3rd, 2008 221 GMT

Watching here in Jamaica and i have to say i agree with most of the poits. Gov Palin seems scripted and not having amy substantial points re policy. Sen Biden has been direct and is to the point. This one goes to Biden. This reminds me of our national debate, when Bruce Golding gave it to Portia Simpson Miller.

Fred   October 3rd, 2008 222 GMT

HAAAAAAA she said maverick again!!!!!!

Vaijayanthi   October 3rd, 2008 222 GMT

I am watching from B"lore India. Dear me what does Sarah think ? She thinks this is a beauty contest, smiling cheekily and smiling when Biden talks as if he is a joker and she is tolerating him. Go to Beverly hills sarah thats where you belong and let Joe and Biden save this planet really. And dont think Politics can be handled by your know all smile. god forbid such types to become VP and getting things done, by the wrong approach that will suit only the movie crowd. Americans please wake up and send all these types home once and for all where they belong. wake up guys please for the sake of the world.

Steve Austin OHIO   October 3rd, 2008 222 GMT

I never watched the debate but can't go by any blogs here due to liberal bias. I see myself voting McCain as a protest vote to the media and liberal nutters. At least the Right has not hijacked this site. What ever happened to respect? Sure if you want to vote Obama please do but don't ridicule someone for having different views. Talk up your strengths and leave it at that. Obama said he was not going to lower himself to a "dirty campaign" however everyone else around him seems to be doing the opposite. If you keep it up you will only alienate the independent. We can analyze and make up our own mind, we don't need opinions forced upon us. This country is divided enough. It just disgusts me to read all these nasty comments.

Undecided until Nov 4,

Jennifer   October 3rd, 2008 222 GMT

Reading a script is not my issue with this debate...Sarah Palin is. Its infuriating and almost insulting to watch her wink at the camera, repeatedly mispronounce the word "nuclear" and most of all, try to take down Joe Biden with a smug arrogance that frankly just isn't hers to claim. The American people are a strong, smart people who will not be duped by a pretty up-do and an accent. Being a governor of Alaska does not a ready Vice-President/possible President make.

S Palin should be aloud to go back to were she belongs, i can not beleive this is the person choosen to be the VP for USA.

Windy   October 3rd, 2008 223 GMT

It is clear Palin has been coached well by her party. However, her lack of experience on a national and international (not Alaska) level is lucid. Why didn't I run again? I really pray that people are not gullable enough to fall for her soccer mom routine. There goes that maverick term again, what is that a bridge to a message?

Independent Voter   October 3rd, 2008 223 GMT

Waiting to board the plane from the Phillipines to Japan. Thankful to get the CNN live stream of the debate. Gov. Palin and Senator Joe Biden are doing what needs to be done not to hurt thier ticket. We shall see as the debate progresses...

MikeW   October 3rd, 2008 224 GMT

As a Canadian not watching our own political debate tonight in favour of your VP debate, I am astounded at the marking scheme and how Rollins has scored Gov. Palin so highly when she seems to have failed to answer more than half of the questions directly. How many times does she have to remind everyone that she is a hockey mom? That just rings as someone who doesn't have the necessary experience to run the most powerful nation in the world.

Mike G   October 3rd, 2008 224 GMT

Let's keep saying maverick and hope it connects. Maverick maverick!

:)

sparky   October 3rd, 2008 224 GMT

ramaprasasd   October 3rd, 2008 225 GMT

Quote: "Somehow, Sarah Palin’s seductive little winks and visible panty line do not strike me as very Presidential. But maybe that’s just me."

I thought she was disgusting with her exaggerated fake feminine expressions.

Again, when it comes to the crucial points she was failing.

Sharon   October 3rd, 2008 225 GMT

Cheap shot, Biden....play the sympathy card...choke up.....talk about dad.....and people are accusing Palin of being set up and phony?

S Das   October 3rd, 2008 225 GMT

If McCain-Palin thought they had a good "strategery" for this debate, they grossly "misunderestimated" how badly it would fail.

Facts versus fluff. The choice is clear.

Ron Owings   October 3rd, 2008 225 GMT

For the McCain campaign folks watching this site tonight:

The race is over. Palin is showing the country that she truly has no clue what she's talking about. Shame on you for even considering to put this woman so close to the presidency.

umqarn   October 3rd, 2008 225 GMT

Gov Pallin appears less compassionate than Sen Biden. She is more animated

Damian   October 3rd, 2008 225 GMT

Watching live stream via cnn from Brazil.........it's like watching a marionette manipulated by handlers up on the ceiling with strings.
The brazilians are laughing at Ms. Palin.
They love obama down here, just like the rest of the world outside of the us.

AA   October 3rd, 2008 225 GMT

I am tired of this debate. Palin is not answering any questions. She should get a job as a lecturer because she prefers to lecture than to debate.

Jim Moore   October 3rd, 2008 225 GMT

Ms. Palin has said very little; she simply repeats lines that she has memorized, lines that contain at best half-truths. I am a Canadian, and she represents again the type of American politician that the rest of the world does not appreciate. I will not live long enough to see China and at least one other nation surpass the States as a world power, but that time will be put back if your countrymen elect someone who knows how to talk with the leaders of other nations.

Doug   October 3rd, 2008 225 GMT

Aha! Dems are utterly frustrated with her NOT tying herself down to answering the questions. Sorry folks, but this is a clever strategy. She is focussing on getting across the message she wants to get across. And for what it's worth, have you EVER seen a genuine debate between politicians? It is always about policy positions and exaggerating the differences.

Robert Munnelly   October 3rd, 2008 225 GMT

Tis better to be silent and be thought a fool, than to speak and remove all doubt. – Abe Lincoln.

I'm a dissapointed George Bush Republican. For 90 minutes I've been watching an aspirational haircut from Alaska cheapen the highest office in the land. 'You don't need to be smart', is the message. You don't need to be curious, you don't need to be informed, you don't even have to want it bad enough to take the time to learn the basics.

I stopped trusting McCain when McCain stopped trusting me; to be informed, and to make a decision based on qualification not gender. That Sarah Paln even be considered for this role is a joke sick as McCain is old. I'm insulted I was ever expected to fall for this.

Greg Larson   October 3rd, 2008 225 GMT

Sorry everyone, it is time for a little psychobabble,,,,,

Biden, is afraid of the camera, he will not look at it at all. What is up with that???

Who cares if Palin WAS trained to do this as a model, public speaking 101. duh............. Perhaps Biden can go back to school.

Also guys, remember this is really about the President and not vice president. Who are we voting for anyway.

Mcain is better and more experienced than Palin, as it should be, she is new and fresh and not a beltway insider. BUT SHE CAN LEARN......THAT SOUNDS GOOD.

We need some fresh ideas in Washington. Somone who knows what it is like to be a real American not some stuck up silver spoon as we have historically had.

The old beltway insiders have done a great job of messing up our country.

Obama should switch places with Biden, as clearly Biden would be much better than Obama.

But hey, Obama will most likley pull us out of fighting terrorists, so get ready U.S. if obama wins, we will be fighting in the U.S. , these terrorists. Or maybe not the will just be bombing us with dirty nukes.

If drugs can be smuggled into the U.S. so can a suitcase with a nuke thru Mexico..... or canada, the great picket fence of the north.........

Remeber this all did not start with Bush, however, he screwed it up worse, but i recall Clinton FAILED to take action when we were getting our Embassies blown up etc. Anyone recall what he was doing at the time he should have been bombing the terrorists??? Remeber Monica and the CIGAR>>>>>

I do not livein the U.S. anymore and am sickened by the way the U.S. is, whatever happens I hope the U.S. can rebound and be respectated in the World again......................... enough for now.....

This is 1 part knowledgable debate, 1 part press conference.

If Palin became President two weeks into their first term, who would she have to teach her?

Is this over yet?   October 3rd, 2008 228 GMT

Sara Palin is an embarrassment to women in power. Clearly she was not vetted on her past or her intellect. She hasn't answered any questions and is so pompous to continually say she will talk about topics that SHE is interested in..ie..that she has a script for. I hope the American people are dumb enough to see through this smoke screen and die-hard republicans will bite the bullet on this election because it's obvious Palin nor McCain with his poor judgement can get us out of this 8-year mess created by GW. If i hear the word mavrick once more, I am going to puke. Biden is clearly specific, direct, and has not resorted to personal attacks when he can't compose an answer. He is the real deal. I would think Sarah has the speech impediment with all of her made up and incomplete words...hmmm who does that remind you of?

Jun Visbal   October 3rd, 2008 228 GMT

This debate by far has been a one-sided affair...this debate has simply shown the lack or absence of readiness of Palin to take on the VP role...this debate simply a confirmation on how badly McCain made that decision in choosing Palin as his runningmate. She is simply not cutting it!

I don't know how her campaign folks will help her after this debate. I am pretty sure McCain is thinking of dopping her rigth after this dabate.

Biden is just too much for her...Barrack just did well in choosing Biden!

Woohoo!

Danesh   October 3rd, 2008 228 GMT

Nawi   October 3rd, 2008 229 GMT

BIden's position is rather conservative, he's not that outburst as he's used too, probably he's being warned about talking down to Palin. But on the other hand, he's trying to be as straight-forward as possible which eventually pays off. Palin is avoiding too many questions, the word "Maverick" is used too much. One thing that I got from this debate is Palin doesn't have what it takes to be the V.P. McCain is betting to get more voters from Palin, we don't need that, we need a qualified V.P.

Andrew Caban   October 3rd, 2008 230 GMT

Palin has just memorized her responses. She dosen't seem real .She dosen't feel what she is saying ,she seems so fake but she has good memory. Biden could be more agresive.

Andrew   October 3rd, 2008 230 GMT

While Gov. Palin has taken an often accusatory and defensive position during this crucial debate, Sen. Biden has proven himself capable of calm, rational, and factual positioning against a wordy, yet under-experienced rival. As an American citizen living abroad, I find Gov. Palin's rejection of direct talks with controversial leaders around the world quite distressing. Since when has good ol' fashioned conversation and ideological exchange failed to bring opposing individuals to common ground? One of America's greatest international assets is it's position in global affairs to moderate, mediate, and facilitate international discussion, and hopefully, eventual consensus.

Heather   October 3rd, 2008 230 GMT

I'm sorry, but she's playing up her down-home likeability by talking through her perma-smile and direct camera-looking to compensate for her grave lack of understanding, let alone leadership readiness, to address the serious economic and foreign policy issues facing America today. Her answers are heavily scripted, not thoughtful or provacative. She's an embarassment to intelligent women everywhere and in no way ready to be a heartbeat away from leading the most powerful country in the world.

Vicky   October 3rd, 2008 230 GMT

Just one question – after watching Palin tonight, does anyone honestly think that she would be a better President than Biden if something happened to McCain?????

James in Australia   October 3rd, 2008 230 GMT

At Greg Larson: Biden is switching between addressing the camera, the moderator and Gov. Palin because he is DEBATING. Palin is addressing nobody but the camera because she is reading a pre-prepared advertisement.

Ike   October 3rd, 2008 230 GMT

Both the Democrats and the Republicans are going to walk away claiming that their candidate won the debate. To be fair to Palin, she has done better than the media coverage of her this past week suggested she would – but lets face it, she doesn't know the details on anything (apart from perhaps energy....)

Steve Austin, it's not a dirty campaign to state the facts. I'm a Canadian, and don't vote in your elections. The fact is that your elections have a huge impact on my world, and the rest of the world. Palin isn't presidential. She slurs her words, and evades truth. Biden invites respect. There really can be no question.

Guido   October 3rd, 2008 233 GMT

George Bush has given Americans a huge budget deficit, the debts levels have reached record levels.

George Bush has plunged the world into a mess with the war in Iraq instead of spending money in fighting Al-Qaida in Afghanistan and worse he went to war on the basis of lies. How can he be trusted.

George Bush does not cooperate.

The world needs change, needs Barack Obama and Joe Biden.

I think that Palin thinks she is addressing a PTA meeting. She seems so flippant about some of the issues. Her "cutesy" laughter and jokes are not impressive inthe least. In fact it puts me off totally. How many times has she said John McCain says, or john mccain is. Sickening! She is just tooo tooo happy = yuckkkkkkk. She had prepared messages that she delivered no matter what the moderator asked.

Patrickdiego   October 3rd, 2008 234 GMT

Holy Cow! What a rambling set of semi-coherent responses. Now I really want to hear Senator McCain say: "I searched throughout America and Sarah Palin is the best qualified, smartest, most well-informed Republican I could find".

Kurt   October 3rd, 2008 235 GMT

I am actually this debate on CNN from Jamaica! Palin seems very well rehearsed, she was very scripted and barely ever answers a question directly. She seemed to have a limited grasp of the facts, as opposed to Biden who could speak directly about Policy...She also failed to do her home work if she did she would have known about the votes that Mccain took with Obama..overall it wasn't as bad a performance as i expected from her....It clearly went to Biden tho

sparky   October 3rd, 2008 235 GMT

Doug   October 3rd, 2008 237 GMT

And I have to say that it staggers me that Democrats would take such an elitist approach to leadership. Surely the strength of any true democracy is that ordinary citizens are entitled to vote, contest elections and hold the highest office. That basically is what separates a true democracy from a dictatorship or its halfway house – an oligarchy. You should be reassured that a hockey mom from Alaska is candidate for Veep, and not just another white male millionaire with strong connections to the military-industrial complex and/or family connections to the Kennedy, Bush, Rockefeller, pick another of your choice elites. I have no problems with a hockey mom from Alaska and she can smile and wink and mispronounce 'nuclear' for all I care. If you want to be ruled by smooth talking Washington insiders, just say so and give all this participatory democracy hoo ha a miss – because you obviously don't believe in it.

Tim   October 3rd, 2008 237 GMT

no substance what so ever in palin's answers. Memorized names and numbers and that's it. IF Biden was allowed to call her on ANYTHING at all, she'd look like the moose in the headlights again.

She had to look at the cards to remember Mitt Romney's name for god sakes, and then to say his policies are like hers? It's a total farce. Get her on stage, live, right now, to spell out Romney's positions on economics or foriegn policy. She can't, this debate was a farce.

Tony   October 3rd, 2008 238 GMT

I didn't realise that electoral laws had changed and 5th graders were able to vote, why else would Palin be speaking to us as if they were?

Greg Larson   October 3rd, 2008 238 GMT

Sorry person from Australia, i must have missed the time he looked at the camera. too busy typing. Good luck America, whomever wins, i hope we can all come together and make our country strong and respectable as it once was...............

bella   October 3rd, 2008 238 GMT

It seems like they told her "If you don't know what to say mention maverick, moms, and drone on about the same thing regardless of the topic."

Who wants a leader that doesn't LISTEN, and can't answer what she is asked.

divya   October 3rd, 2008 240 GMT

Palin was not bad considering her dismal performances in previous interviews. The expectations were low. No gaffes but absolutely no substance at all. She repeated the same things, refused to answer the moderators questions properly. Unfortunately the americans will lap it up. And again unfortunately they will be very sorry for choosing her a la bush.

John   October 3rd, 2008 240 GMT

Why are people here so nasty towards Palin. OK, yes she has less experience and had a lot more pressure on her shoulder, but I thought she did a great job overall.
And those comments here about her looking like this or like that, please get a grip. She's beautiful so leave it at that. We don't make any comments about Biden's hair, etc. PALIN WINS!

Adam   October 3rd, 2008 241 GMT

"She seems at ease"?! You've got to be watching a different debate. She looks desperately uncomfortable, she's been evasive on any topic of any substance and is clearly spewing talking points without any more than a superficial understanding of the issues. And whenever she's been trapped, she's resorted to her folksy, aw-shucks stuff – like that pathetic shout-out for third graders. Is anyone in America buying this nonsense any more?

Biden is hitting it out of the park. He's across each and every issue in depth and detail, he has an intelligent and substantive stance or rebuttal for every point raised, and has driven home every point that's important for the Dem campaign.

Palin is out of her depth. I'm embarrassed for her.

anya   October 3rd, 2008 241 GMT

PALIN stayed poised but was a huge BLANK when it came to identifying specific ways in which John MCAIN would change the republican party's policies and on his record of voting with BUSH. She did some cheerleading about how great AMerica is but that does not answer what exactly she would DO.

BIDEN was forceful and passionate and able to articulate SPECIFIC CHANGES that would help average americans. He also knows what he is talking about while PALIN seemed to be repeating a CRAMMING.

If I had no prior knowledge and had to judge this debate I would be far more convinced by BIDEN.

I give the debate to BIDEN.

jmac in jpan   October 3rd, 2008 242 GMT

The said thing is all the Mccain/Palin followers will love it, and talk about how great she has done, this includes fox

Greg   October 3rd, 2008 242 GMT

The most important statement from either candidate was when Palin agreed with Cheney's interpretation of the Constitutional power of the Vice President.
Cheney's claim that the Vice Presidency is a member of neither the Executive or Legislative branches of government is a blatantly incorrect interpretation of the Constitution and was asserted so that Cheney could refuse to release documents and evade other federal laws.
Cheney's actions while Vice President probably amount to the greatest abuse of government power in history and cannot be aloud to continue.

Windy   October 3rd, 2008 243 GMT

Lets put things in perspective. The VP will represent the US. It would be nice if they could pronounce words correctly. It also would be nice if they could remember the name of the commanding general in Afghanistan. Is it that bad to have standards? Nothing against hockey moms, just ignorant and out of touch people running for VP.

Michael Tyler   October 3rd, 2008 244 GMT

Sarah Palin showed once again that she is ignorant and unready to serve as Vice-President, let alone President. She does not debate - all she does is parrot simplistic, pre-wired "talking points" that I'm sure somebody else wrote.

M. Gerritsen   October 3rd, 2008 244 GMT

How can you give it to Palin? She did not answer any question straight, showed a true ignorance of the issues, and gave only memorized speeches.

martin   October 3rd, 2008 244 GMT

Biden was fabulous!!!!!! Now that's something my wife and I both agree on!
Wow!!! He was awesome!!!!!

Boo Ballard   October 3rd, 2008 245 GMT

YEP, it’s confirmed… SHE’S A COMPLETE IDIOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!………………
she hasn’t given ONE straight answer yet, and in fact she boasts that she will answer the questions just the way she wants to, HAH!!!!!!… however she’s quite good at memorizing a cliche-filled pile of BS… the moderator Gwen Ifill is totallyyyy over her in the first 5 minutes… hehehe….

OHMIGODDDDDDD, she is not even respecting the debate format AT ALL!!!!!!!!!!!… Gwen Ifill is about to KICK HER ASS!!!!…. this is really way too ridiculous to believe……………….

AND(!!!) she says “NU-CU-LER” just like W!!!!!!!!! Arrrrrrrrrrrghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh……………

Vishal   October 3rd, 2008 246 GMT

So I watched the debate after a 10 hour flight. Palin is not only inexperienced but seems cocky. I dont get it why she keeps on smiling when biden is talking about his deceased family or when he says that bush's policy hasnt worked. I understand Alaska is an integral part of america but cummonnnnnnn!! Her role as mayor and governor and gas regulator and soccer mom so she can not only be the VP but also understand why the ecxtension of the office of VP's office is normal. There is nothing more dangerous than an ignorant individual with authority. We all know this from our offices.

Aj   October 3rd, 2008 247 GMT

Biden displayed the fact that he is well versed in a diversity of affairs with regards to the United States while Palin's inability to answer questions simply turned her into a second moderator.....Biden as the winner.

bear   October 3rd, 2008 247 GMT

I'm very impressed with Biden, i like Palin to, but the spin masters had obviously taken her for one to many spins preparing for this debate over the last month, it was clear as daylight that she was just repeating memorized talking points. The performance Bidin put in tonight was outstanding, sometimes the best debater is not the best ruler, but I would be willing to take the chance on Biden and I hope he will get the chance to be a vp, he is obviously a man that can help restore the place of the US in the world as an admired and looked up to global force of stability, human rights, democracy and freedom.

Johny   October 3rd, 2008 247 GMT

I was surprised by how well Palin did. She threw some nice punches!! Palin is a great speaker and debater. She gets my vote for being the outsider and not the typical old boring Washington school.

Bill from Sydney   October 3rd, 2008 248 GMT

The woman is an idiot! Unfortunately she is making American women look real bad (which they are not!) Who could honestly think this moron could be president if need be?

Guy   October 3rd, 2008 248 GMT

As an Australian observer, and having just watched that on TV, you guy's need to protect your country and that means making sure she is keeped well away from the White House. Mr Biden seems like a very good person to have in the shadows.

Doug   October 3rd, 2008 249 GMT

And by what standard can Sarah Palin be judged inadequate? The US has had many very ordinary Veeps as well as Dan Quayle who was in a sub class all his own. Presidents? Well let's not pretend George W is unique as a disappointment. How many of these guys were otherwise fixated on jelly beans, fortune tellers, sexual conquests, paranoia, and ...never mind...it's a long list. Palin, she's ordinary and she's inexperienced. So? She's no prisoner of the beltway bandits. She's different. Big deal. New broom, fresh approach. She sounds ok to me.

Uma in Liverpool, UK   October 3rd, 2008 249 GMT

I'd call what Palin did 'dodging questions' - she moved into her comfort-zone, or twisted the question around, if she couldn't or didn't want to answer it.

Joe Biden was statesmanlike and straightforward. He lost a few people on some legislative points, but he was never evasive, and didn't seem 'glossy', or ingratiating. Palin did both of the latter.

Guy   October 3rd, 2008 249 GMT

sorry keeped = kept

Gilly   October 3rd, 2008 249 GMT

Much to my surprise, Palin was poised, lovely, well versed, very convincing...but lacked in substance in the long term. By the end of the debate, Biden, though not as appealing, seemed to have a better grasp of the subject matter.

Emily   October 3rd, 2008 250 GMT

The only negative about Joe Biden, was that he felt a bit tired, but he clearly won the debate nontheless, as he was the only one presenting facts(and not lies, as Palin did all throughout) and a vision for the future.
You don't present your vision by smearing someone alone, Mrs Palin...

She clearly has done her domework during her ehm, debate camp(ridiculous!), and felt as though she was reading out loud most of the time, but it got quite uncomfortable when she started stumbling upon her own words, and started looking down on her notes, more and more.
However, as expected, she had been well(more or less) drilled, and repeated some of McCain's mantras robotically.

Biden is more well versed, more knowledgeable, more concise and precise than Palin will ever be, and I thought he was quite chivalrous and let her have her moment to redeem herself after the last days' public ridicule of her persona.

I am dead tired however to hear that she's a "real person", because she uses quite a simple language when expressing herself, whereas Biden feels as the most real person of all the candidates combined, only more eloquent.
I think it's time to look beyond the basics.

Go Biden!

Vicky   October 3rd, 2008 251 GMT

What do the commentators mean that she came through.
she just came out of it looking like a puppet.
On looking ahead maybe she can stop talking about Alaska. She is tougher than i thought i just wish she showed more brain not Macain brain. Bipartisan again i heard that sentence mmmm yesterday morning from MaCain

Philip Machanick   October 3rd, 2008 251 GMT

Ignorance is curable. Stupidity isn't. Palin has had a few weeks to work on ignorance and clearly has made some progress, even if it amounts to repeating scripted lines rather than answering a direct question. Stupidity? You be the judge.

Gaby Dorcil   October 3rd, 2008 253 GMT

Sarah Palin probably, if not certainly, pleased the base of her party which was ready to throw her under the bus for exposing her inexperience on CBS. However, for the undecided voters in those swing states, I don't think she convinced anybody that she is qualified to be a heartbeat away from being the leade of the free world. Also, please, Governor, shout out to 3rd grader? On a Vice-Presidential debate??? Wow.

Peter   October 3rd, 2008 253 GMT

Biden gave thoughtful replies, he got very very good towards the end. Especially it was good to see him trash Cheney. Biden is a good man! Palin was coached and repetitive with some key phrases from McCain, did not answer questions. Biden won.

Mike G   October 3rd, 2008 253 GMT

It seemed like at any minute she was going to say 'I change my mind, I don't want to do this, is that okay?' (with a big smile of course)

:)

William W   October 3rd, 2008 253 GMT

Palin was like a robot. Her answers were scripted and she didnt answer the questions asked. She sounded nervous and kept repeating herself about getting rid of Wall St mismanagement etc. No substance in her debate.

hannielf   October 3rd, 2008 253 GMT

Philippines: There's no arguing that Biden has far more experience in American politics than Palin. Obama + Biden make a better pair - Obama has the vision and the vigor to implement fundamental changes, which the country needs, and Biden has the experience to see it through. McCain doesn't distinguish himself enough from the Bush Administration, especially on economic policies and the war on Iraq; whilst Palin just isn't ready to be in the executive. I'm worried for the American people that if McCain wins, the much needed change won't happen fast enough, especially with a VP who has more ideas to offer than actual experience.

This debate highlights the main difference between the two would-be VPs - one is ready to implement change and run the country with the President, the other seems only to talk. America needs more than an exchange of ideas between the President and the VP, the country needs to change its course – right away!

Bob   October 3rd, 2008 254 GMT

Sarah Palin seemed to me to be pretty much functioning in the debate as a robot, heavily programmed with canned lines - not responding to the questions or debating at all. Yes, she sounds lively - but is anybody fooled into thinking she could do the job?

Karen   October 3rd, 2008 256 GMT

I don't know about the rest of you, but I would like to have as President/Vice-President someone as DIFFERENT from me as could possibly be. While Palin may relate to a lot of people because she comes across as a nice and friendly person, who is a good debater and done a lot of good in her town and state, common interests in taking kids to hockey practice, drinking beer, etc. is not something I want to see in my leadership to be honest. When you're in the White House you are facing such critical issues on a global scale, things I couldn't even begin to fathom but someone has to have that responsibility. I want the president and VP to be worrying about nuclear threats and economic meltdowns, not being "one of us".

Vicky   October 3rd, 2008 256 GMT

Mike G >>>>. that's what it was mmmhhh I wondered what that look was

Ben   October 3rd, 2008 256 GMT

I can't believe you could call this for Palin! No kidding that she benefited from low expectations, but I don't think you should call a Vice Presidential debate just because a candidate didn't drool on herself.

The absolute stand-out amongst her failures is her inability to make it sound like she understands talking points. She just drops them in all over. I'd agree with the other comments, she'd obviously studied hard, but only in memorising the little speeches she needed to make. For me, there was very little evidence of genuine understanding of nuanced issues. I thought there was a night and day contrast between her superficial buzzwords (did anyone count how many times she said maverick?) and Biden's much deeper display of understanding.

Sisi   October 3rd, 2008 257 GMT

As a Republican I'm ashamed of the performance of Palin. I can't take her serious, she's like a marionette and I'm so tired of her and Alaska. Mc Cain made a tremendously mistake putting her upfront as a VP. And that wink of her....that really horrified me.

Emily   October 3rd, 2008 257 GMT

By the way, I'm an Italo-Swede born and raised in Sweden, and I can pronounce nuclear better than Sarah Palin!!! What's with that word and the republicans, anyway?!?!?
She feels like a female version of George W Bush(imagine playing Trivial Pursuit with those two – what a battle of the brains that would be!)... Pfew!

Uncommitted Voter   October 3rd, 2008 258 GMT

To John,

Based on this debate, I'm embarrassed to say I've been republican..but obviously you've been swayed by long hair, soft voice and ignorance. But I'm happy to see that Palin can say the word energy...Oh...check your spelling Maverick, I mean John

Random Canadian   October 3rd, 2008 258 GMT

I'm incredibly shocked at the rave reviews that Palin is getting! Please tell me that Americans are indeed smarter than a 5th Grader. She DID NOT ANSWER MOST OF THE QUESTIONS PEOPLE!!! She tried to use fear tactics!

Americans, get your heads out of the sand! If you are unpopular in on the world stage it's because you are seen as the aggressors, not the victims!

Marie   October 3rd, 2008 258 GMT

Humm.... being Gov in Alaska must not be a very hard job! I've heard high school debaters that could talk circles around Palin!

Mary Moberg   October 3rd, 2008 258 GMT

I understand tonight that Obama is a very very smart man for picking Biden. Having Hillary as VP candidate would complicated things for him in the white house, and Americans would be having two presidents. With a man like Biden it will be straight talk that makes alot of sense, and i hope Americans will be wise this time around about having this set of intellectuals to rule.

ruby   October 3rd, 2008 258 GMT

Why was she talking so fast? Memorized lines and afraid she's going to forget her lines? She didn't answer a single question. Tell her to stop smiling and winking as if she can get away with that! And please, why can't she pronounce "nuclear" correctly?

DMac   October 3rd, 2008 258 GMT

Palin brought life to the debate. The freshness and candor of not only answering the questions but offering her own strengths were greatly handled.

Kristi   October 3rd, 2008 259 GMT

I can't stand Sara Palin, especially her voice! If I were locked in a room for weeks with nothing to do but memorize scripts and punch lines I could have stood in for the debate tonight too. As a woman, I am outraged and embarrassed by Palin and what comes out of her mouth. COME ON PEOPLE!!! Wake up! She's not intelligent, she's not qualified! All she does is talk down to others who don't agree with McCain. I don't know what she believes because it's just rhetoric. It's like McCain with same bad hair-style over and over again!

Kim   October 3rd, 2008 259 GMT

Palin just repeated what I've heard her say so many times at John McCain's rallies. No facts, no clear policy, NONE. And too much perky smiling. The debates discuss issues that deserve much more serious consideration than she has given in her answers (if she actually answered any, which I don't think she did) and in her excess facial enthusiasm. In stark contrast, you have Joe Biden, who can answer the given question clearly with facts and policy details. I got the impression that Palin did not understand what Gwen meant by an Achilles heel as she immediately launched into a rambling monologue of her "strengths".
I'm so tired of hearing that woman speak.

pete   October 3rd, 2008 259 GMT

Joe was full of knowledge and emotional. Sarah was brash, snarky and so well studied she seemed cartoonish. Was I surprised not at all. It was exactly what I expected.

Jaydee Castillo   October 3rd, 2008 301 GMT

i watched the debate from Spain. i saw Palin did not answer some questions. Biden did. He showed clear knowledge and experience on every issue. Biden was the clear winner. He is the right one for the job for the Americans.

ASR   October 3rd, 2008 301 GMT

I expected Biden to crush her. He did not. She scored on the energy issues, and taxes. She avoided pitfalls. She clearly refused to address her Achilles heal (misunderstood the question or Used it to address strengths?).

Yes Biden is more informed, and has many years in the Senate... but We knew that before the debate. She may not be up to speed, but is clearly a fast learner!

Sarah Palin would not keep me from voting for the Republican Ticket.

I am a registered Democrat... but have not decided who will get my vote, yet.

P.W.   October 3rd, 2008 301 GMT

Hey Random Canuk,

How is the weather up there>>>>>>

you guys need to do some self-evaluations since you harbor most of the terrorists that enter into the U.S.

Clean up you country before passing judgement on US.....

Dadiv   October 3rd, 2008 301 GMT

I think Palin did quite well on holding on and not showing how inexperienced she is. So I will give her poins on that. With tonights ferformance, Palin will atleast stop the huge flow of undecided voters that is flowing towards Obama right now. But as to whether it will bring the balance back , and will enable McCain to win, I doubt it very much.

Biden though looked to me the more knowledgable one. So perhaps
Biden will make a better VP. Having said that it is also a fact that all this debate will be forgotten when the next crucial Obama Vs McCain debate will come up.

Tom   October 3rd, 2008 301 GMT

I watched in Australia as they went to a group that was deemed to be unbiased but looking at the group they were, The group handed Palin the win but I think she lost it. She was condesending and also I am wondering were will they get the troops for the surge in Afghan because they cant get them from Iraq.

I think a vote for the republicans is a vote for conscription. War with Iran, cuba and russia is on the cards with McCain and Palin

Uncommitted Voter   October 3rd, 2008 301 GMT

John,

Palin wins because she's beautiful??? Wow..well I hope her beauty can pay for you gas when goes up again...However, I will say that her hair was nice..maybe we can make her secretary of the United States of Alaska.

D Nicol   October 3rd, 2008 302 GMT

Palin was pathetic. So she did a great job regurgitating memorized set speeches. None of it came from depth of experience or depth of knowledge.

And the prospect of 4 to 8 more years of the White House saying "NYOO-KYOO-LERR" instead of the proper pronunciation of "nuclear" drives me up the wall.

Boo Palin!!

Vincent   October 3rd, 2008 303 GMT

Someone should tell Ms. Palin that she is running for vice-president of the U.S. not vice-president of Alaska.

Greg A   October 3rd, 2008 303 GMT

Palin is much better dressed and I find her a lot more attractive than Biden.

I am not sure why anyone is getting stressed, the V.P is hardly a critical role and let's face it. Can anyone remember anything significant the current one has done except being a bad shot?

:)

lily   October 3rd, 2008 304 GMT

Sara Palin proved herself tonight. She really held her own. While pointing out her fresh ideas and her desire alongside McCain, to be committed to the American people, she respectfully disagreed on many issues Biden threw at her. She graciously clarified circumstances in which Biden manipulated in order to portray the McCain/Palin ticket to being inconsistent or "out of touch" with the American People. I liked what Doug had to say on this post about what a true democratic voter needs to consider when they vote this November. Do we really want another polished politician? I'm with Doug, who cares if she misspelled or mispronounced a word. I'm concerned about the character of the would be leaders of our nation. I think it is pathetic that someone would focus on something so trivial. How many times have you mispronounced a word in your haste to deliver a statement? Shall we worry about her grammar lessons or her ideas? So, sad to see the focus so far off from where it needs to be.

Doug   October 3rd, 2008 304 GMT

Again, the strength in democracy is that it enables ordinary people to rise to extraordinary office on the support of their peers. The worst news for Palin today had nothing to do with the debate – it was McCain's ill-timed decision to pull his team out of Michigan. Holy cow – who was the moron who dreamt up that howler? Like, it couldn't have waited a couple of days AFTER the debate? People expected Biden to be smooth. To debate well. To know detail. But that doesn't translate into traction with swinging voters. What works is achieving empathy with those folks by talking and acting in a manner that connects. I think the important thing here in terms of impacting on voting intentions is who changed the minds of viewers in a positive sense. Dems clearly detest Sarah Palin – but that is a given. If you truly consider yourself a swinging voter – still to make up your mind – who do you lean towards now? I don't think Sarah Palin performed anywhere near as poorly as Dem supporters want to think she did. Sarah Palin did however play a different game, and I think that it was effective. That may not be what you wanted out of the 'debate', but it may be just what the GOP wanted. Think about it before you howl me down. Both these teams are hoping to score points in different ways with undecided voters. And we know Sarah Palin connects.

bella   October 3rd, 2008 305 GMT

It's hilarious and pathetic how these sycophants praise her on tv just because she didn't completely blow it and managed to repeat the same talking points coherently when she didn't want to answer the question.

Are these the standards?!?!

Laughable.

Thomas   October 3rd, 2008 306 GMT

Never answer the questions given, that's number 1
number 2, everything she said was scripted. let me say it again
everything-she-said-was-scripted.
number 3, "like", "kinda", "nuclear", less educated and prepared for a public speech.
Obama/Biden 2008

Ray   October 3rd, 2008 306 GMT

Palin stucked to the script. By listening to the debate i came to know that she learned the script a lot. I am sorry to say she doesnt know anything about the forign policy. She was also skipping the questions which she was not comfortable. Always talking about the issues which she was comfortable. Trust me USA the 'greatest country' will be in trouble if they elect Palin. She can not not take real political decesions. And will be juz a doll if Palin is elected we will see MCcain doing President and VP job together. God save america. I like MCcain had decided to vote for him but Trust me No Obama took the first right decesion by selecting the right VP

Steve   October 3rd, 2008 307 GMT

If this was a contest between two candidates (ie Presidential candidates), we'd have an interesting race. But God help us now that Palin has entered the equation. Is there anything we can do that will convince Americans NOT to vote Republican?

Maya   October 3rd, 2008 307 GMT

Palin is a disgrace for the US, nobody is going to take her seriously. Biden was obviously and as expected to the point. Palin still don't answer the questions and by the way....she is not prepared being a VP and that says something about Mc Cain's judgement and his team. Tonight Biden was on his best, he has his records straight. Palin would be a fine secretary...but not a VP...certainly not a President. She was so briefed...hard to watch some times. But that was to be expected.

Interested Kiwi   October 3rd, 2008 308 GMT

Watching this vice-president debate live it is very obvious that there is a world of different between actual experience (Biden) and someone who has been coached to hit the "buzz words" (Palin). I cannot think of any other country in the world (off the top of my head) that would be taking the risk of having someone so inexperienced waiting in the wings to take over the top job. For the sake of your own nation and your allies vote for Obama.

Diana Bolanos   October 3rd, 2008 308 GMT

I think it is not her time yet, and I also think Macain's time has passed, let new blood give it a try. Obama is our best way out of the mess we are in.

ojong   October 3rd, 2008 308 GMT

jonathan
Palin was out to repair a broken image she did not bother about substance for she never went anywhere beneath the surface or beyond her scripted lines. Biden potrayed statesmanship. All in all the debate was reassuring . ojong, cameroon

Emily   October 3rd, 2008 309 GMT

Bella: I completely agree! Well said!

Stop making excuses for her, people. I feel for her, because I think that she's been given a much too big a job, for her qualifications(?), but that doesn't mean that I want her in office one day!

Sanjay   October 3rd, 2008 310 GMT

It was a debate between Alaska and USA

Chantel   October 3rd, 2008 310 GMT

As a person who lives in Australia I watched the debate with interest up until McCain added Palin to the ticket I wasn't fussed about who America picked I felt that both the canditates could bring a much needed change to the world's view of America. As soon as Palin was brought on I got worried. Palin is too much like Bush and too inexperienced to run America. Its up to America who they pick the world is watching in with interest like we did in 2004 I hope that unlike 2004 the world can say hey America got it right.

Tiff   October 3rd, 2008 311 GMT

As an American living overseas, I watched that debate and read some blogs to see what other watchers thought of it all. It scares me to see what some people say about who they're voting for. Did people not notice the support for Obama/Biden from the rest of the world? Are some Americans really so caught up in being enthocentric that they'll vote for McCain/Palin because she has some kids and likes guns and he was a POW? There doesn't seem to be much more to their ticket other than that and a real preference towards avoiding issues that desperately need attention. I'm not the only one scared that America will prove it's lack of sense yet again and elect McCain/Palin.
Palin didn't dismantle as predicted, but she can only be said to have won that debate if we're voting like a beauty pageant....reminds me of that video of the Miss South Carolina and the map question...is that what Americans are like these days?

Joe Values   October 3rd, 2008 312 GMT

Joe Biden is a politician, he is used to serious discussion on issues and policy. Unlike the bimbo beauty queen, who is used to looking at the cameras, and she was especially well rehearsed, just like the beauty contests. She may have beat Joe on the superficial level, but she failed miserabley on substance. And unfortunately, we really need substance, not superficial.

Random Canadian   October 3rd, 2008 314 GMT

Hey P.W.

The weather up here in Canada is unseasonably warm thanks to global warming, an issue Palin tip-toed around nicely. Thanks for asking.

Mayan   October 3rd, 2008 316 GMT

I think that Joe Biden made more valid points than Sarah Palin. All that I got from Palin was her appeal to emotion of the American viewers; she kept on applying policies to her own "diverse family". She kept on pushing that image, completely neglecting the fact that Joe Biden has the same experiences that any American does everyday. Relevance should always be present in the equation. Joe Biden, on the other hand, discussed macro-perspective national and foreign policies that really mattered, and when Palin was asked to comment on these real matters, she kept on playing the "I'm running with McCain card; hence, vote for me". She clearly isn't ready to run for Vice President if she cannot even express her own stand and opinions, even if these do echo those of his candidate.

With regards to Obama and McCain, both parties have fundamental differences, but at the end of the day, what we need is a good man who's heart AND head is in the right place, someone who knows the real needs and outcry of the American people. That man is Barack Obama. And with Joe Biden at his side, the United States will surely be in a better place than where it is now.

Denise Heroux   October 3rd, 2008 317 GMT

By far Biden is the one ready to be the next VP.

Palin needs so much more experience. Running the state of Alaska and being a "hockey mom" does not match up with Biden's wisdom & experience.

Biden did so much tonight to show his sensitivity to chidren , the economy, the war with class.

Palin needs a lot more refining, like the oil she desires to dig up.

Maybe later for her, but for now it is the Obama/Biden team that is needed.

Doug   October 3rd, 2008 317 GMT

Sarah Palin is reviled by Dems because she is a woman and aspires to the White House and embarrasses them for what they did to Hillary. Who, of course, was the strongest candidate in the field in either party. And the GOP picks not just a hockey mom; not just a photogenic candidate; but someone whom they – the conservatives – had already endorsed en route to winning a state governorship. Face it folks, Sarah Palin scares you for all the wrong reasons. The Dems are simply incapable of getting behind a woman with real power, or with the prospect of attaining it. The GOP under John McCain has taken a courageous step in choosing Sarah Palin and it is THE factor that can swing this election.

John   October 3rd, 2008 320 GMT

MCcain u failed by selecting this lil kintergarden kid who is good in byhearting the stories

Neil   October 3rd, 2008 320 GMT

Absolute flop on Palin's part. Very little detail. Far too much use of "also". Broad recycled statements that mean nothing.

Biden, much stronger leadership material. Had more details and facts and figures.

What was Johnny thinking?

Mark T - London   October 3rd, 2008 320 GMT

Yes, I do think Governor Palin's presentation showed a bit of nervousness and I do think she relied heavily upon her week of coaching. Wouldn't you if you had but five weeks to prepare for a debate of this scale? I also think both the Presidential AND the Vice Presidential candidates have a combination of one experienced/one new-comer eager to the occupy the two offices. My vote and respect goes to the TEAM that best represents those qualities of experience plus fresh change. After 18 years of living in the UK, I still think McCain and Palin display the core values and optimistic plans I expect from my Government and I wish them Godspeed and Good Journey on their way to 4 November!

P.W.   October 3rd, 2008 321 GMT

hey R.C.

Did you ever hear about the ice age? Yeah, it is over and we are on a warming trend. However i am happy that you think we sent you nice weather!!! How is Miami North, still have cold beer up there?? EH>>>>

anyway, ALL of us need to work together to make a better place for the world to live in. I am not a REPor a DEM, just a worried person who wants the world to get better.

I hope the cold trend comes back soon, cause i would love to go skiing in whistler again!!

Charlene   October 3rd, 2008 322 GMT

Everybody was expecting the worse of Palin. Unfortunately, she did not disappoint us.

Tiff   October 3rd, 2008 322 GMT

I'm a woman, and I would never stand for a woman who doesn't even believe in equal pay rates for women and men. I didn't support Hillary and the fact that Palin is a female has not affected me at all, besides to say that she's not a good representative of a "feminist". And she is one of the last women I've met whom I would choose to give power to. It was a good choice for shock factor, but not so much if anyone chooses to look at the issues, and not just the fact that republicans "gasp!" selected a woman. I think the election hangs on McCain, and if Palin can actually convince anyone that she knows enough to run a country that tries to be a superpower. The US president affects SO much more than the US, there's a big responsibility to realize this for the US public. Hope we do it.

Random Canadian   October 3rd, 2008 323 GMT

Hey P.W.

At least we agree that the beer in Canada is cold. Peace.

Sven Nater   October 3rd, 2008 323 GMT

BIden strikes me as another tired old Washington buffon. Supporting Obama who voted with the Democratic leadership 98% of the time. That isn't change.

Bad democratic legislation is the cause of the current economic crises. And the Dems and Obama are comfortably seated on the Wall Street / Washington Gravy Train. Look at where all the Wall Street money has gone – to Dems.

Palin and McCain have the integrity to eliminate some of the problems we face with how things are done and to ireally change things.

Christopher (WA)   October 3rd, 2008 324 GMT

Both did their party's proud – though Palin clearly showed her backbone and substance; Biden displayed his depth of knowledge.

On whole, Palin did better than Biden.

AL IN JAMAICA   October 3rd, 2008 324 GMT

Chester Bean   October 3rd, 2008 324 GMT

What a Fraud! It was obvious that she was reading from some script. It was obvious she was asked to "get out" certain points,no matter what the question was. "I` ve only been doing this five weeks" Is that what a V.P says? and "I wont answer questions like you want me to but im going to speak straight to the American people".What kind of idiocy is that?
"joe sixpack" Who the hell is that? Sounding ignorant doesn't identify with the American people miss palin.Biden well done:Professional,You answered the questions, showed restraint on Palin when she kept saying General Mcclellan, when that isnt his name. One more thing Mrs Palin STOP SAYING MAVERICK!! I cant take it anymore.

NukUlar...wtf?

Cmartines   October 3rd, 2008 328 GMT

Palin was flipping papers when not looking in the camera's but that doesnt mean her answers were crisp . She had an attack to make and she tried. I am disappointed , I wanted down and dirty cause we all know Biden could have blown Palin out of the water.. One , with her "I am a foreign policy expert" and her current situation in Alaska. Not to mention she has no clue as to who is the commander in Afghanistan and to think he was gentleman not to correct her.

I hope that Obama gives the 1,2 to McCain in the next debate. Tonight I was bored and wanted more .. its time to place these 2 "Mavericks" on their tush and ring the victory bell . Or just take a look at the "fact" blogs and see how many times McCain has lied about Obama , makes you wonder what else he would lie about .

clint   October 3rd, 2008 329 GMT

i watched the debate live on cnn here in the caribbean and what amazed me the most was that immediately after the debate the guest panel ALL were saying that Palin "did well" ? Are ALL of those people insane! Why doesn't CNN have their analysts review and "score" who answered which question better. Then we can see the truth...

Rob S   October 3rd, 2008 330 GMT

Sarah Palin seemed like a schoolgirl that didn't understand the directions. She didn't answer several questions and didn't even seem to know what an achilles heel is???

I'm a European, but I'm really scared, if this lady enters the White House.

Hugh   October 3rd, 2008 332 GMT

I could not care less if Palin looks into the camera or down at her shoes! It’s the substance of her remarks that is of paramount importance. If she seems to have improved since the Couric debacle I put it down to intense pre-debate coaching. For the most part her responses were so transparently scripted she may as well have been reading from a teleprompter.
She was obviously chosen as McCain’s running mate in a desperate, cynical (and insulting) ploy to attract female voters. Clinton and Palin are not cut from the same cloth and any intelligent voter, male or female can tell when they are being manipulated.
Biden’s responses were for the most part thoughtful and intelligent. His position as running mate a sound and logical choice.

Random Canadian   October 3rd, 2008 333 GMT

John Harrison   October 3rd, 2008 336 GMT

Please please please. Do not allow this shambles to continue. Palin is out of her depth, and her willingness to be led like a lamb to slaughter and take everyone else with her is too awful to contemplate. As someone living in Switzerland, I am offended by this political process. Change now.

Kalen712   October 3rd, 2008 336 GMT

I'm sorry, but are the panelists on CNN watchng the same debate that I just did. Sarah Palin's delivery was simply horrible, and she did not even meet up to her expectations. Each time she spoke, you could sense the disconnection of her words to her true beliefs. Don't try to make news by saying Palin did well, it was a disaster, but part of that can be contributed to the amazing job Biden did.

And by the way, Palin asked Biden if she could call him Joe, but she never refered to him after that. It may be a silly thing to mention, however, it does show that everything she said, even her jokes, are completely rehearsed and dishonest.

Binden smashed Palin. Palin only had memorised answeres – often not een answering the question at all. She seemed to smile like a child plotting the makings of a mud cake whenever she thought that she might trip Binden up on sometthing – but generally came back with tripe. The only honest answer she gave was the "5 weeks" quip. Thanks for that Sarah, oh – and thanks for reminding me 50 times that you're from Alaska. What do you know about the rest of America let alone the rest of the world??

Asifo   October 3rd, 2008 342 GMT

John in Chile   October 3rd, 2008 343 GMT

Well it is clear this was an unequal debate between a true statesman and someone who was just out of her depth. Palin sounded like someone who had barely scraped through the 8th grade. Her expression reminded me of a rabbit caught in the head lights. And that accent! For heaven sake!! It terrifies me to think of someone like that representing the American people.

Hi, David here from the UK. I am a British Citizen (and its 04:43am and i should be in bed!!) Anyway, I have been very interested in the election campaigns and debates. Throughout this debate it is clear that Biden won and Palin is just not ready to be vice president. She is not capable of doing the job. But also and you have to consider this; Do you really believe that Palin could be president if anything happend to McCain?? NO! This is what you have to consider, as this could potentially happen, I have to say Obama HAS to be the next president of the US. He is young, new, fresh, intelligent, articulate and KNOWS what he is talking about!. If as Americans you are looking or change – consider this! In 1997 the conservative government had been in power in the UK for 18 years. The british people wanted change. They got it! Labour and Tony Blair destroyed them in the elections! The British people voted made their vote count! The Labour Party won the general election in a landslide victory, leaving the Conservatives in tatters after 18 years in power, with Scotland and Wales left devoid of Tory representation Labour won 419 seats (including the speaker) – the largest the party has ever taken. The Conservatives took just 165, their worst performance since 1906! Tony Blair – at 43, became the youngest British prime minister of the century.
If you really do want change from a Bush Administration and republican government – That will NOT change if you vote McCain – Then use your voice and vote Obama as your president! If you vote for McCain, you will be laughed at around the world. If you cannot see the clear evidence that Obama will be a great president, since Bill Clinton(i liked him), then you are a fool! Vote Change! Vote Obama!

Random Canadian   October 3rd, 2008 345 GMT

John in Chile,

LOL!!! Ah ha ha! So true and so terrifying all at once.

Ed Greshko   October 3rd, 2008 346 GMT

Palin was unable to give any answers to direct questions. Never even answered the question about what changes have occurred in her thinking. All she could do was segue into her energy talking points. There is no substance. I feel her only achievement in the debate was to prove that given a few weeks of intensive training she could avoid making an absolute fool of herself.

She may be able to talk like your average American...and connect with the average American on a social level *but* so can my next door neighbor. I don't want my next door neighbor as VP .

dottedline   October 3rd, 2008 349 GMT

leslie sanchez calls Palin "a fresh new voice"....why is "freshness" the criterion by which we judge a candidate's ability and potential to serve? What happened to intelligence? Sarah Palin is a frightening beauty pageant, a NASTY beauty pageant queen. Caribou Barbie is a chilling embarrassment.

JonathanU   October 3rd, 2008 350 GMT

It was interesting observing Palin's remarks to Joe Biden before the debate began and after it ended. She actually came across as genuine, and gracious in a way that McCain definitely did not last Friday. But as the debate wore on, she seemed to respond to questions more with platitudes and prepackaged statements than real answers. When the viewer notices on several successive questions that the answer had nothing to do with the question, that's points off. Also I think she knew she was pushing the envelope when she paused, then said "You're just waving the white flag." That was inflammatory, and not in a good way. It was a bad decision to say that.

Biden also dodged a few questions, but overall had much more substantial answers. Clearly he knows his stuff, and he was spot on in tone and demeanor. I was impressed when Biden rightly pointed out that while McCain has labeled himself a maverick, so many of his policies are a continuation of Bush's, foreign policy especially so. Plus Biden didn't peter out the way Palin did as the debate went on. Rather he seemed to find his groove.

The verdict: Joe Biden wins on substance. But Palin beat low expectations and gained back some amount of credibility as a VP candidate.

The big looser in the debate, in my opinion, was the word "maverick". It is acquiring an ironic sense, and no longer means what John McCain thinks it means...

S FRISQUE   October 3rd, 2008 350 GMT

One crucial area that you are missing with the CNN polls and web-site blogs is that many of the Republican party supporters (and not necessarily registered Republican party members) are no longer watching or responding to the debates or the media.
Their decisions have already been made to support the McCain/Palin ticket. I wonder how representative your polls are especially when you show poll numbers of who won which debate. I suspect you are getting much more attention from the Democratic party. The rest of us have already made our decision.

Emily from Australia   October 3rd, 2008 351 GMT

A little FYI for our good friends north of the equator – The ENTIRE world cannot fathom why ANY American would vote for McCain/Palin. McCain is a Bush and Palin is a Joke! The best choice for president is SO obvious, and it is utterly disheartening to see so many Americans backing McCain. Why would you do that??? Can you not see what the last 8 years has done to the WORLD? Please on behalf of the WORLD do not vote for McCain/Palin.

Mac   October 3rd, 2008 351 GMT

Mann, you are a terrible commentator. You strangely call Palin's non-answers as 'working around her weaknesses"

How is answering a question with unrelated "hockey mom' nonsense considered a success?

Pablo   October 3rd, 2008 352 GMT

I will give it to Governor Palin, very good Cramer, so good she had to stick to her memory Q cards and could not anser the questions.
Biden on the other hand, had facts, specifics and made his points. He knew hat he was talking about, govenor Palin said what she was told to say.

mikey   October 3rd, 2008 352 GMT

If being at ease in front of a TV camera (she was, after all a TV weather reporter) and providing glib responses to substantive questions makes her somehow qualified to be a heartbeat away from the most powerful position on the planet, then we have overlooked a vast untapped resource for future leaders – and a content-free song and dance queen is born!

Ed Greshko   October 3rd, 2008 352 GMT

Yes, Doug, "choosing Sarah Palin and it is THE factor that can swing this election"....in the favor of Obama/Biden! Thanks McCain for giving us the *Change* we need and the *Change* we deserve. Thank you for giving us Obama. :-)

lumay   October 3rd, 2008 353 GMT

I'm disturbed that a CNN anchor / reporter could have such a shallow response to the debate!
And your criticism of Biden is that he talked TOO MUCH about policy! What the?? Isn't that why people bother to watch a political debate? To hear policy debated??
Well, no wonder Palin pleased you – she avoided policy as much as possible, unless you count raving on over & over about the same stuff as being convincing policy!
But perhaps all her cutesy smiles, winks, and down-home talk compensate for lack of real substance! Funny, I thought America had had enough of that from Dubya!

E. Murray   October 3rd, 2008 353 GMT

Biden displayed thorough knowledge of the issues while Palin seems to be reciting only what she has on paper. Biden showed firm stance on isuues raised. Some viewers would say that Sarah has the ability to redirect the question to the points she wants to raise. i would say that she was not able to provide direct answers to certain questions because all she could recite was the typewritten reports she had before her.

I think that Sarah would make a good Senator or a Congresswoman but to handle the US as a country would be too much for a woman who has a limited knowledge, background and experience on important issues particularly on economic issues, and foreign policy.

Doug   October 3rd, 2008 354 GMT

Neither Obama nor Biden has any leadership experience. None. Zip. Zero. McCain's 'leadership' experience is limited too and mostly of a 'maverick' policy nature. Only Palin can stand before the American people as someone who has been elected to office to lead, rather than represent. And whether that was a small town or a small state, it was for leadership roles. People may snipe at her for various reasons, but leadership shouldn't be one of them. She's been there, done that and continues to hold office with high approval ratings.

sylvia silverstein   October 3rd, 2008 354 GMT

Joe Biden made almost all the important points in this debate. He could have done even better if he looked at the camera to connect with the viewers. He was however very real when he almost came to tears toward the end. Give him the credit for being very human and a meaningful man. AND I'M GLAD HE FINALLY CHALLENGED MCCAIN ON THAT "MAVERICK" ISSUE!

NotATypo   October 3rd, 2008 356 GMT

I give Sarah Palin credit for improving over her abysmal interviews the past few weeks, however any of the wives of the presidential and vice presidential candidates could have done as well as she did this evening. Still a huge gap between her knowledge and the knowledge of John McCain, Barack Obama, and Joe Biden.

It was clear she had memorized talking points she had to say quickly before she forgot them (rather than answering the questions as asked) and there were a few responses that showed shades of the Charlie and Katie interviews. Miraculously, she managed to pull herself together and was able to complete her sentences within the time limits, by golly.

Joe Biden was still the clear winner as he was able to effortlessly counter each jab with a bigger counterpunch. Regardless of your opinion about the spin either way, he clearly knows McCain and his record better than she does.

AlexinFairfax   October 3rd, 2008 356 GMT

I think Biden's performance tonight is an excellent example and demonstration of his leadership and management skills. He cited specific examples of WHAT EXACTALY HIS TICKET WILL DO to challenge situations that the new administration will have to face. Also, Palin's negative charges of the differences between Obama and Biden are not a bad thing...it's a good thing. That fact will introduce multiple perspectives as well as a healthy check and balance for thier administration. Palin is just a visionary with no substance (just classic republican positions on issues)...a cute cheer leader for Mccain. Plus, not to be mean but a 72 year old POW taking on the most chellenging job of his career in a critical time where the economy and foreign policy are do or die could have serious heath reprocussions....which could result in SARAH PALIN BECOMMING COMMANDER AND CHIEF.....do you want her to be the face of America in a changing world!! Matt Damon had it right when he said it's like a Disney movie gone bad...Hockey mom becomes President..

pratik   October 3rd, 2008 357 GMT

Palin said she does not ascribe global warming to human activity and mentioned about some cyclical phenomenon. Thats grossly incorrect. She does not know the facts. Or maybe she is being deliberately obtuse.Remember her husband's in the oil industry. And that she is so hard pressing on ANWR drilling. I think i smell something fishy here.
Besides she's dumb and wud be a disaster if she were to become vp let alone president.

Stan From Calgary   October 3rd, 2008 358 GMT

Michigan Independent   October 3rd, 2008 359 GMT

Hello,

How can anyone be happy with Sarah Palin's performance tonight? There were four questions or so she didn't answer. Lastly will someone please tell me why Sarah Palin can be different and folksy and Obama is having a very hard time be accepted by some.

Biden on points

Stan From Calgary   October 3rd, 2008 400 GMT

Sharon... What are you smoking?

pratik   October 3rd, 2008 404 GMT

Palin sounds like an oil industry lobbyist to me. Denies global warming- human activity connection. Says polar bears are not endangered.
Global warming will wipe us off. We better do something substantial and do it quick. If this lady takes office, OUR PLANET WILL BE IN JEOPARDY.

Sharon Nelson   October 3rd, 2008 405 GMT

I will not vote for Palin. Absolutely no way I will. Before the debate I was undecided. Now I am very decided.

Thank you.

Dan in Sydney   October 3rd, 2008 407 GMT

If anyone could point to a single direct question that Palin actually answered than relying on her script I'd be surprised.

ralph   October 3rd, 2008 407 GMT

Hello i'm from holland thats a country in europe. I think that palin is the same as bush because she want to make war in this beutiful world and she want to win and rule the world how grazy is that america is not suprieur. your econimie is corrupt because they think the can do everything in a few yaers the dollar isn't much and euope money the euro will take it over from there

jmd   October 3rd, 2008 408 GMT

Yes, Palin is obviously charismatic and has the camera down, However, to me she comes across as plastic, rehearsed, and not very intelligent (with poor English to boot). When she could not or did not want to answer the question she simply diverted attention and offered soundbites... no specific plans. And she try to play the fear card which I do not resonate with. Re: Biden, needs to look at camera more but that doesn't affect who I vote for. He should have been more aggressive the first half, was alot better in the second going after the "maverick" comments, etc. I think he should have really played up his extensive experience and found a way to contrast to hers...but it seems he was coached not to attack her and accomplished that. Biden was overall much more versed in issues and details of proposed plans and I think in the end he wins.

Internationalist??   October 3rd, 2008 410 GMT

How come Sarah keep saying she is a maverick given she has no track record as a politician in the national stage??

Thomas   October 3rd, 2008 411 GMT

From Germany: If US politics wouldn't have such an impact on our life we'd sleep well and switch on CNN every now and then to have a good laugh about those politicians who claim leadership because of anything else but intellect.

But unfortunately it's a serious matter. Please, fellow Americans, prevent the world from another... [self-censored]. We don't fear a strong America. We fear idiots controlling a strong America.

Thank you & good luck to all of us.

Angela Talbert   October 3rd, 2008 411 GMT

This was a very good debate. Senator Biden did very well. I was surprised at how much he knew. I could see Biden being a great VP and with his wealth of knowledge, and if need be, I great President. He handled Palin very well. She tried to crack little jokes on him. But she failed. She could not really answer questions very well. She did do better than her interviews. However it appears she had memorized her statements. She appeared to just babble on things that did not make sense. She could not repsond any time when Biden would state on the things McCain voted for . If you had a choice as to who could run the country if they were president. Hands down, it would be Biden. Palin would be a scary choice. Biden won this debate.

Let's see.........95% of the comments here say Biden won.

Frank Luntz's poll of Independts says that Palin won overwhelmingly.

By deduction, CNN is favored by the Left.

I think gleaning any meaningful political analysis from this blog is doubtful.

Especially those who sneer at Palin's 2 years as governor vs. Obama's whole 2 years as a Senator.

Can anyone point out a single piece of Obama legislation?

I dont mean the 150+ "present" votes from the Illinois State Senate.

lumay   October 3rd, 2008 419 GMT

Doug – you idiot!
This is a debate, supposedly about policy!
Yes, a debate is about winning an audience & convincing them to your point of view. You appear to rate that succuess on how often they looked & smiled at the camera . Sorry – for me (& hopefully anyone with half a brain who watched the debate) I was won over by clarity of thought & speech, substanace of argument and sincerity! And that didn't come from Palin!

Sharon Nelson   October 3rd, 2008 420 GMT

In response to an earlier comment, "left wing women" don't like Palin because they are left wing. How dense can you be?? Left wing women are not likely to vote for the right wing policies that have brought our country to the ground.

Don't kmow what your IQ is but I suspect not too high if you can't figure out the answer to that simple question.

Sharon Nelson   October 3rd, 2008 423 GMT

Kyle Taylor   October 3rd, 2008 425 GMT

Can't wait for the fact-check on Biden

Obama clearly stated he would meet Iran without preconditions, but Biden lied.

Obama did vote for the tax increase on incomes over $42K, but Biden lied about it

McCain co-sponsored a bill in 2005 to tighten regulations on mortgage underwriters, Obama said nothing about Fannie Mae- but Biden lied about it

Will CNN ever discover Barney Frank's comments about Fannie Mae from 2005 or his conflict-of-interest/gay love affair with the Fannie Mae exec?

Dont see Blitzer or Cafferty working that hard for a story.

Thomas   October 3rd, 2008 426 GMT

She's holding her own only because she's not answering the questions that she's supposed to. You can clearly see that she doesn't know how to answer some of them.

Dr John Montgomery   October 3rd, 2008 429 GMT

Reading these comments I can see how CNN 'scored' for Biden. What a bunch of blinkered lefties! You were all hoping Mrs Palin would fall flat on her face. But she didn't; she was very good indeed. But you are mostly all too biased to say so. Her policy view is consistent, Biden's is not. It is better to lower taxes in a recession; Iraq is nearly won and the US has to stay until it is stable; Afganistan too; Iran is a severe threat not 'a little country' (Obama); energy independence is good; climate change is complicated; the Dems who ran Fannie Mae should be imprisoned; educaton should be about teaching and individual responsibility, not left wing ideology; Obama is on the far left of US politics and has never voted across the aisle. Obama has close ties to MArxists, nutty preachers and terrorists. Palin won hands down

Chester Bean   October 3rd, 2008 430 GMT

What a Fraud! It was obvious that she was reading from some script. It was obvious she was asked to “get out” certain points,no matter what the question was. “I` ve only been doing this five weeks” Is that what a V.P says? and “I wont answer questions like you want me to but im going to speak straight to the American people”.What kind of idiocy is that?
“joe sixpack” Who the hell is that? Sounding ignorant doesn’t identify with the American people miss palin.Biden well done:Professional,You answered the questions, showed restraint on Palin when she kept saying General Mcclellan, when that isnt his name. One more thing Mrs Palin STOP SAYING MAVERICK!! I cant take it anymore.

Kyle Taylor   October 3rd, 2008 430 GMT

Who's really fighting the War on Terror?

Do the body counts of Al Qaeda in Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan....etc.

Then do the body count of US soldiers vs. any other country in the world.

Wonder when the rest of the world will start pulling their share of the load instead of sneering from the sidelines while American heroes are the ones catching bullets.

Maybe then Barack Hussein Obama wouldnt be so popular when its their children being killed by terrorists.

I won't deny it, I support Obama more than McCain, but you know why he lost me? because he decided that this woman was a good VP candidate...

and Today I think we can see, she really is nothing but air.

She kept running around the same issues and avoiding questions, she went after Biden a lot of times, but he didn't attack her... want to know why? because after hearing what she said you can't feel anything but pity.

The reason you all think she did good is because the Bar was underground, she just had to Walk over it and everything was fine, but guess what? that is EXACTLY THE PROBLEM WITH US... Why we have to set the bar so low in the first place? they are both running for Vice President of our country, a very important office in our government, why is the bar so low for this Alaska Barbie? what is wrong with us?

McCain had my vote until the day he picked her as a VP candidate, he demonstrated to me that Obama was right, he had no judgment... and I would rather have a person with ZERO experience and good Judgment than a person that CLAIMS to have lots of experience yet is willing to risk our country with "The hockey mom".

I had enough with our Drunken fool, I am taking a vacation, but on November I am surely voting for Obama/Biden at least Obama says he wants to hear the opinions of people that don't share his views, McCain on the other hand got himself and pretty android that will do and say anything he wants.

Doug   October 3rd, 2008 432 GMT

lumay, you obviously haven't watched too many political 'debates'. They are NEVER about policy depth and factual accuracy. They are ALWAYS about presenting yourself in the best light. If you want a policy debate, visit a college and sit in on a debating contest. Political debates are THEATRE pure and simple. Palin and Biden are exponents of different styles and I am simply suggesting to you that Palin understands and delivers theatre far better than Biden, who thinks he's engaged in a debate.

Nancy Belsky   October 3rd, 2008 433 GMT

Governor Palin wears a grin that is patronizing and demeaning. Although she says she speaks for the middle class, one does not feel the feelings...but rather she feels scripted. She talks about special needs yet lowered the budget for special education. She exploited her child by bringing the baby to the convention. How many of us would bring an infant to a convention! Give me a break.

She seems inflexible, dogmatic, and rigid. She is not a deep thinker but a cool speaker. I rather prefer the pensive intelligence than an impulsive maverick. Were she to become President, the country would be in dangerous hands.

pratik   October 3rd, 2008 434 GMT

No Mr. Jonathan. She did a bad job.

timm   October 3rd, 2008 436 GMT

Anyone who thinks Palin won this debate is completely delusional. The only reason people think she did well at all is because she didn't completely embarass herself. Five weeks from the election and she has prove she's not an idiot, that's not good enough. Not to mention she didn't even answer the first three questions.

I thought Biden nailed it. Demonstrated clear understanding of the questions. Gave compelling answers, and handled himself perfectly.

It's clear to me that this is a power hungry and war hungry woman, who has greater objectives than just becoming vp. She's frightening.

Go Obama!

Mauricio Rodriguez - Costa Rica   October 3rd, 2008 437 GMT

I´m from San Jose, Costa Rica, and my views as Hispanic is that neither Sarah Palin nor Joe Biden won tonight., although Palin had the best lines inside the debate and was closer to her audience much better. Granted, Sen. Biden was well prepared and gave a good performance. I felt she had a grasp of the issues and soundly put to rest any doubts about her competence. Granted, I was watching Noticieros Televisa but the focus group people all seemed to agree.

Her only political guarantee, to have been governor of the exotic state of Alaska for two years. At the same time has credentials outside the scope of the offices that come out of his overwhelming personality. Anti-abortion, fervent defender of the possession of arms and with a speech and power unexpected, Palin is not herself a fighter who never gives his arm a twist. And will not make today in full discussion with Biden. Interviewed recently at CBS News, Palin said before the doubts: "I've been listening to their speeches (those of Joe Biden) in the Senate since I was in second grade. I am the new blood, new faces, new ideas ... and he did not. "

The Democrat, a Catholic of Irish origin, brings 35 years in political life in Washington, by emphasizing its dialectics and competent technocrat. "John McCain said it would pursue Bin Laden to the gates of hell. That's fine, but I will say one thing: President Barack Obama will pursue in life and then sent him to hell," said Biden among the applause and laughter from those present at a rally. Its ease of lifting laughter, all analysts agree: you need to correct his tendency to talk more, like when Obama said it was "the first African American to be politically knowledgeable, fair and handsome." No one may be too aggressive or condescending in its confrontation with Palin.

Doug   October 3rd, 2008 438 GMT

Another reason politicians do not engage in serious debate is because they tend to agree on ninety odd per cent of everything anyway. Then they try to exaggerate the remaining ten per cent to make it look like a profound difference. Yet another reason not to get caught up in the bluster. You would do better to read about their personal lives and get a sense of their real values, honesty and integrity – or lack thereof – and vote according to that. Policy debates are a sham.

Tim Richardson   October 3rd, 2008 439 GMT

Palin did well,Alittle roboctic for my taste. She was not speaking from the heart or experience.. Sounds as if she was studying for a test. And remebering her lines. On the other hand Biden sounded more vice presidential. What's funny is I don't think Americans realize the seriousness of this election. Sometimes I think people don't take it seriously like it's going to pass the next day. Sad how we look at politics.Honestly Americans must realize that Palin is not ready for this important job. Are you ready to keep our men and women in uniform dying in war? How many of them will have the chance at life like you are having at there expense?.I've never saw Americans act this way before..Interesting

scruffy4biden   October 3rd, 2008 440 GMT

Dr Montgomery, your view is narrow, I think Joe Biden represented the real America, and your Sarah Palin represented snow white and the seven dwarfs from some magical fairy tale land..she is an air head.

kate buckingham   October 3rd, 2008 442 GMT

HAHAAHA Pitbull Palin was a disaster!!

"We're gunna get'cha, by darn dog'gone it!" She sounded a lot like Bush!!! Seriously, this is who Americans want as the 2nd leader of their country?

She couldn't stop regurgitating Republican verbal diarrhea- such empty words, with no substance.

BIDEN SPOKE ABOUT THE ISSUES and time and time again had to correct her lies and fabrications.

VOTE OBAMA

Leonard   October 3rd, 2008 448 GMT

From Jamaica. Am i to get this? Some Americans are actually thinking about voting for McCain/Palin. What does looking in the camera have to do with running country. How does being a POW make you more qualified to lead in a situation like war NOW? How is saying who said what when going to help America. Fact is America and the world needs a leader who will bring some common sense to leadership, not bitter OLD war heroes who want to use power to make somebody pay for what happened years ago or try to bully people who you clearly can't. I'm not saying Obama is perfect and nobody is. Nobody is completely right or wrong about anything or subject, but if you listen to both men speak you see clearly that Obama will bring better judgement to issues facing America which i fact affects the world economy, jst look at what Geoge Bush did and see how he made the world worse off that it was eight years ago.

Joseph   October 3rd, 2008 449 GMT

Considering the pressure she must have been under I thought Sarah did pretty well But and it is a big BUT; did she say anthing of substance? Don't think so. same old, same old. She must have used the word 'maverick' a hundred time or more.

Maybe she needs a few more years as Governnor of Alaska to mature a little more.

Reddy   October 3rd, 2008 455 GMT

I watched the debate. i am totally dissapointed with the method of not putting the importance of this election and about government in prespective. The prespective is not hoe palin performed as per her own expectations or did Biden knock her off.

The Prespective should be about issues and capability to lead the most depending country in economy, foreign policy. Biden was far far better in understanding than Palin.

if palin does not know about issues its not the fault of Biden and for that matter people. How can people accept that she can lead the country. She is worst than any normal politician or deplomat.,

The best combination would be George Bush and palin: Two Dump people leading the greatest nation on earth and people will elect them. True democracy.

Doug   October 3rd, 2008 456 GMT

How come we aren't slamming Biden for claiming climate change 'is clearly manmade. Really Joe? You think the seasons come and go year in year out without change since time immemorial? I mean, this is flat earth society nonsense. Any historian familiar with just the past two millenia can point to major climatic variations – far more pronounced than today – that enabled and drove human migration. A warmer north atlantic, a wetter north africa – changes which enabled Norse settlement to spread and Roman civilisation to prosper. Overpopulated, blissfully ignorant 20th-21st century civilisation is facing reality. Joe Biden knows nothing about this topic; he is simply appealing to his voter base, many of whom are being suckered into this spiel. It's not scientific. It's not evidence-based. It IS intrinsically a massive threat to the world economy in terms of unnecessary additional business costs/taxes/regulation to 'fix' a pretend issue. Climate isn't changing – climate is being itself. People mess up and we should be more careful with our environment as a matter of principle but we don't drive the cycle. We're too insignificant for that. Biden dropped a clanger on this so much worse than anything Palin said and with far worse implications for America.

8 Years of Bush Presidency has destroyed America's reputation and economy. Another 4 Years of Republican McCain and Palin Presidency will turn America into a laughing stock on the world stage!

I find it surprising that you saw the debate that way, she looked akward and out of her depth. It also seemed that she was completely forcing the “I know how you feel” angle. Palin was clearly out classed and was well out of her depth, she wasn’t debating the soccer mum’s.

I watched the debate from my office in Sydney and everybody found Palin’s performance amusing and not in a good way. She was stroking the American ego and that seems to be what people want to hear. I don’t mind John McCain but Palin is not suitable running mate. America can help itself by cleaning up their image globally a ticket with Palin on it does not help.

Steve Franks   October 3rd, 2008 458 GMT

Will we end the war now? Is the big question. Most everyday I think the majority of the Iraqi people don't deserve the blood of the American citizens and the Western Free World to improve their standard of living. They don't understand how we achieved our high standard of living. They want it, but are not willing to work for it. When we give the Iraqi Construction Companies US Government contracts, they perform poorly and will not listen to guidance to improve their performance; they will perform the work in the old Iraqi substandard way. It will take centuries of new generations of Iraqi’s living in the Western World and centuries of marriage with different blood lines outside their tribe to change the old engrained traditions. Is there hope for the Iraqi's? Yes and right now we are their only hope. When will we leave Iraq? If ever, remember, the United States and Saudi Arabia are running out of oil reserves and Iraq has the 2nd largest oil reserves in the world. So where do we go from here?

John in Chile   October 3rd, 2008 500 GMT

To Doug... Wait a minute. Let's see if I got this straight.... Are you saying that Palin won the debate because she understands THEATER better and that Biden did poorly because he thought he was engaged in a debate?
I think I am beginning to understand why some people are Republicans!

Sharloett   October 3rd, 2008 500 GMT

As a women I was proud of Palin on the other hand she is not Hilary. Palin was placed with that  good looking man Joe Biden and lets face it he knows what he is talking about. He has had a lot more experence.

Joe Biden did a great job answering the questions I fill he was an wonderful choice for Obama. I can see the two working together also Hillary. God has a place for her in this time she is a women it is not only a minority mans time but also women.

I am an older women and while in college back in the seventies this was one of the subject questions as to who would be the first to be president of the United States. The book Future Shock was right on it.

I do not understand why Christians do what they do to one another both Palin and Biden are Christians and yet they seem to be acting as though there believes are different and really they are not.

I do not believe that Homosexuals should have medical insurance or any benefits as a man and women who are married as what the creator buts together I do not care how many devorces we have.

I would like to know how the president is going to handle 501 c 3 non-profits not performing homosexual marriages? will we be going to jail if we do not ???? please be truthful so we can put it out there to get the jail cells warm. And what about homosexuals raising children??? I do not believe in it. I was part of the homosexual life syle in the eighties I watched both genders who where gay mess up a lot of childrens lives.

Yes I love homosexuals they really make you laugh, but what about our children?? Older homosexual men like younger men or boys, do your research.

We need change.

Knowthing was said about the housing problem. What are we going to do? I was just told that I had to move.

Please forgive me for just jumping around oh well that is what happen tonight with the debates.

Willis   October 3rd, 2008 502 GMT

Biden really gave her the beating of her life and she is not fit or prepared to be either vice president and heaven help us if she were ever in line to be president.

Mike   October 3rd, 2008 507 GMT

What a wonderful diversion from the ridiculous bill forwarded by the Senate. Do you Americans know that the new amended bill states the secretary can ask for up to 700 billion…AT A TIME. Therefore the lawmakers of your country are asking for unlimited funding to fix the mess the US is in. Further the bill is not the rejected bailout bill, it is an old spending bill passed by congress which has been simply spliced up and butchered by the Senate. Why? Because the US constitution states all spending bills must be sourced in congress not the senate. You guys better be on your game and on to your congressman as they are about to send the common American (in contrast to the country) broke.

Leonard   October 3rd, 2008 507 GMT

Let's get this right. Palin knows nothing about the the environment or world climate changes. Wanna know why so many hurricanes are now hitting the US? Global warming causing wammer waters Doug and it is man made or acclerated, so let's get that right.

Ray D'Cruz   October 3rd, 2008 519 GMT

It was a clear win to Biden, both in terms of substance and style. Biden was in control of the issues and the detail, while Palin talked in generalities. This was evident both on domestic and foreign policy. Biden also came accross as confident and warm. Palin's style was generally effective, however she looked uncomfortable when Biden was talking policy detail and difference. Our panel of expert international judges will be blogging their VP debate verdicts over the coming hours at http://electiondebates.wordpress.com.

Lucy   October 3rd, 2008 520 GMT

Lets pray that Obama and Biden win this election! This woman Sarah Palin is absolutely terrifying, like a nightmare for many women like me!
She is not prepared to be in politics, not at all.

binathar j   October 3rd, 2008 528 GMT

i think that s palin did not argue directly to the subject being dicussed in the issue.

Stephane MOT   October 3rd, 2008 536 GMT

Stephane MOT – Seoul, Korea

Doug   October 3rd, 2008 540 GMT

John, I reiterate my point. Yes indeed, Sarah Palin may have won – I haven't seen any independent assessments just yet – because THEATRE is exactly what these events are. Biden didn't do poorly BECAUSE he was debating; but he risked losing badly if that's where his focus was. For heaven's sake, ordinary Americans are not sitting around adding up debating points to see who 'won'. They're looking for confidence, style, something they can identify with, a cutting remark. Dan Quayle could have won all the factual points in the world versus Lloyd Bentsen, but that one cutting statement re JFK nailed him good.

Devine   October 3rd, 2008 542 GMT

I am currently watching the debate and Palin has not impresed me. The only thing that she seems knowledgeable about is ENERGY!! She knows nothing about anything else. When asked a question, she refers to what McCain beliefs are, what his plan is. I enjoyed Biden because he talks policy, he talks numbers, he talks change. As for him looking in the camera, it doesn't matter whether he looks in the camera or not. That is irrelevant to the campaign. It is all about what are you going to do for the American people, how are you going to better the economy..those are the important issues!!!

Johnny-B-Good   October 3rd, 2008 545 GMT

from South Africa: to quote that famous cliche "when the US sneezes, the rest of the world catches a cold". My interest in this election stems from the fact that we are all affected on a global scale from the outcome of this election.
I beg all voters, even if you're not an Obama supporter, at least take a risk on the leser of the 2 evils. Vote Obama/Biden, cos the other option is absolute doom!
Palin in the Whitehouse? God help us all!
The world is watching and hoping for the USA to lead by example for the sake of betterness.
DO THE WISE THING ... VOTE OBAMA. It seems such an obvious choice as an objective outsider, not consumed by partisan politics and pseudo-patriotism so badly showcased by Palin, an embarrasment to the global audience.

frank bull   October 3rd, 2008 545 GMT

Palin is not right on the dot compared to Biden. She's not listening to Biden to form an effective educated argument. She spewed memorized spiels. When cornered on an unfamiliar issue, she reverts to her comfort zone which energy. It betrayed her inexperience and knowledge in many issues.

Biden by a mile.

frank bull   October 3rd, 2008 548 GMT

Doug, Palin did not win by any stretch of the imagination.

Devine   October 3rd, 2008 549 GMT

Also, does Palin realize that USA is alot bigger than Alaska? with more issues? more people? Honey no one cares what you did for Alaska but those that live there. There's a big world out there and you aren't ready for it.So click your heels three times and you will be home!!!

frank bull   October 3rd, 2008 551 GMT

The reason why Obama is running away in the polls is that the Republicans are busy defending Palin and McCain in his choice of running mate. Coupled to the fact that US is experiencing worst state of its economy.

GT   October 3rd, 2008 551 GMT

She proved that she's a great soccer mom. She should go home and be the best soccer mom she can be.

She claims to believe in transparency. Great! But you essentially praise her for being good at dodging questions. How does dodginess lead to transparency?

You pundits are a joke.

Doug   October 3rd, 2008 555 GMT

Leonard, warmer waters may indeed be the cause of increased frequency of hurricanes, but there is no scientific evidence that humanity caused or affected that frequency. Also there is evidence that ocean temperatures are cooling, not warming. I don't have a view either way, but I am puzzled by contradictory data. And has the frequency of hurricanes increased? You need to be very careful with your source data and be confident that the same criteria are used for the period in question. There seems to be quite a degree of fluctuation. And as human population grows to record levels virtually everywhere, you need to be consider that a storms that might once have damaged sparsely inhabited areas now affect populous areas. That doesn't mean that hurricanes are more dangerous or frequent, just more in our face.

frank bull   October 3rd, 2008 600 GMT

Why dp the Republicans have the propensity to foist ignorant but charismatic demagogues like Quayle, Bush, Palin, etc.? Are they insulting the citizens of the United States?

Doug   October 3rd, 2008 603 GMT

GT, I recognise her skill in performing according to her skills and limitations. If you want to bury your head in the sand and persist with some delusion that the Democrat and Republican candidates will actually commit to a debate in which facts determine the victor, go right ahead. But that's not why they play this game. They play because it is theatre and they can deliver telling blows via cutting remarks, set piece deliveries and on screen style. Nixon and Humphrey failed abysmally on tv debates because they focussed on the debate and too little on presentation and theatre. And who will ever forget Ronald Reagan's comeback in 1980 with 'there you go again.......'. Not a fact; not a policy. Just some folksy style that set him up to deliver the kill.

Vinny Pan   October 3rd, 2008 605 GMT

Watching the entire debate live from The Netherlands, I saw Bush, Mccain, Cheney, in the eyes of Sarah Palin. Like a girlish adventurer, she came into the debate, saw Joe Biden but got conquered by the moderator's questions.

frank bull   October 3rd, 2008 605 GMT

Doug, people want substance, not theatrics. Period.

John in Chile   October 3rd, 2008 606 GMT

Doug, I guess it depends on what one looks for in a debate. My hope is that we come to these events in search of understanding. One hopes to gain depth by listening to and then weighing different points of view on the same issues.
So in that sense, I would agree with you that most of us are not "keeping score". At the same time, I don't relate very strongly to the idea of "scoring" against the opponent (or, to use your language, "nailing" them). What should stand out is the undergirding rationale behind the differing stances on the issues.
My personal difficulty with Gov. Palin is that her message (which I, personally, perceive as muddled) is hard to grasp because her personality is so very strange. Many Americans (and this is certainly the case for people around the world in general) cannot conceive of taking her seriously. Her presence on the ticket completely undermines any chance what-so-ever for McCain as it squanders his hard-earned credibility.
It is not only the United States that has had to bear the burden of misjudgment during these past 7 years. The entire world has borne the consequences of America's leading in the WRONG DIRECTION. All that is admirable in a historically noble society has been lost.
Imagine a world governed in WISDOM rather than trying to influence things by gazing through a gun-sight.
What other choice can there be? The Republican party needs to regroup and redefine itself. It can no longer lay claim to being the "grand old party". They have become anathema to citizens everywhere.

Big Sal   October 3rd, 2008 620 GMT

I'm not amazed by anything that happens in US politics these days, if the last 8 years have proven anything, it has proven that anything can happen.

The lunatics have taken over the asylum and there we have the usual suspects CNN, spreading their usual propaganda. Just like the republican party themselves profiting from war and the misfortune of those less fortunate.

juma   October 3rd, 2008 621 GMT

After watching the debate from Nairobi, Kenya my conclusion was Palin tried to save the republicans after a bad storm, however she shone the spotlite on herself as a candidate for the VP.
The challenges facing the US and the rest of the world needs a leader who is ready and willing to restore back America's former glory......time is of the essence here.Biden came out as someone who avoided the camera but tried to tackle the issues wisely.
I hope the american voters will make a wise decision and put leaders in office who will turn things round for good. This is an election to watch since it will determine alot in the months to come.....for the US and the world at large.
May the best man win this race...

Doug   October 3rd, 2008 622 GMT

John in Chile, EXCEPT that following her nomination and killer speech at the GOP convention, McCain's popularity soared and put Obama in the shade. It is only since she has been hidden away in the background that things have drifted back to Obama. I think McCain has to let her loose and let her snap at Obama's heels. She does a great job of it. Biden is ineffectual in this regard, one ageing white senator versus another. As to the past 8 years, I suspect Cheney – and probably Rumsfeld – have a lot more to answer for than George W. I think your closing sentences are over the top. A Democratic administration is not inherently different to the GOP and if you look at recent history it was Democrat Presidents that led the US into battles around the world (and sometimes for very good reasons) – in Somalia, in Iran (failed attempt to free US hostages), in Vietnam, in Korea and WW2. So Republicans are not historically the fighters. They're moreso the isolationists.

ron in Iraq   October 3rd, 2008 630 GMT

Sara Palin gets it!! Joe Biden hasnt got it for over thirty years in government!! Joe just cant help himself to lie about being forced down in Afghanistan in a helicopeter because of hostilities, being shot at in Iraq, being a coal miner and I could go on and ao about his misrepresentaions of his experience. I have been in Iraq and afghanistan and Iraq for 4 years now and have been shot at several times and hunkered in bunkers as mortar were inconing. He has no idea!! The same is true with OBAMA!! What real life experience does either of them really have except being indocorinated by all the radically in their live from Radical Islam in Africa, asia and the collegiate socialist university professor at Harvard! tell me that? You cant associate with so much of this radical influence and then claim that it has no bering in his values and well as his wife, Micheal. He says he is for change. To me that means he want to knock America down a notch from being the most powerful and inovative country in the world to being a second rate vasilating country with the intent on safisfing the European socalist countries of the welfare state. The democratic Party has become the elitist Party that now truly beleive that only they know what is good for the average Americam and world citizens. Just like Stalin, Hitler, Pol Pot, lenin and Mao. And look at the death and destruction that self serving Ideaology brought to their countries and the world!! Take note. It wasnt untill the death of Mao and China, Russia Veitnam following Americas lead that their lives haveimproved!! Give me a break Democrats!! Don t ell me that only your line of thinking will improve America and the worlds societies. See what ! line of thinking and 1 party rule does to counties. Can I mention the reversal of freedoms in Russia, Venasuala and China when people want to oppose them. Does Tibet ring a bell!! Does Georgia ring a Bell? For those of you who have not been shot at and under constant threat of having his head cut off by Religious zelots of Islam I can tell you an OBAMA and BIDEN victiry will be a Vitory for AL Quiada, Taliban and people who wish that America does become weak and can not defend itsel or its Allies. Think about it

Nick from Baku   October 3rd, 2008 632 GMT

Did you notice that the moderator Ifill was say more thank you to Senator Biden than Gov Palin.

It only shows how biased the main stream America media are so made up to make Obama "their chosen candidate" the president.

What a 21st Century coup!

God luck at that...

Lew   October 3rd, 2008 638 GMT

All seemed very polite. I think Biden was in a no-win position from the beginning. If he had hammered her, he would have been viewed as a bully. Unfortunate for sure, because we missed the kind of challenges to McCain's war mongering and narrow mindedness that needs to be surfaced. American troops are fighting for PEACE – not glory Mr. McCain/Ms. Paulin. If they remain in place for the sake of glory and not peace then they are unsuccessful!

Seems that if I vote republican I am voting for a country that forces me into one singular view of life. Democratic seem to welcome all lifestyles. Choice is easy for me – I'll take the government that gives me the options I deserve. No one has the right to dictate my lifestyle, and McCain/Paulin should have no interest in the bedrooms of the nations.

CNN- your ost debate panel was pathetic. And there was this pundit who says that Palin is now ready for 2012!!

Alex   October 3rd, 2008 651 GMT

Well, I live in Abu Dhabi and it is Interesting on how you Americans view this. Palin? Well she tried to contain herself but come on Americans when are you ever going to be serious? Is that a candidate you can even consider for a Vice President of the strongest economy in the world currently bleeding? What a joke! Get serious Americans. McCain, you are a good man but have failed on this one. What is also interesting is how the Republications praise themselves to be winning the War in Iraq. How funny that Palin was telling Biden that moving out is surrender? TO WHO? When you where not supposed to be in Iraq in the first place. The Economy is in distress and you are still prepared to be spending billions of dollars on war? I am not American but frankly Biden and Obama are the only sincere team that will bring real change you Americans and the entire world. Please CNN don’t mislead people just say it openly that Your VP candidate “Palin” is an embarrassment and if that is what you call VP material,, then something is very wrong with all Americans. Well done Biden.

Sarah Palin is just not qualified for the job. It's so evident. She is just an embarrassment for all women that worked hard to gain recognition and make their place in this country. Palin probably made-the-best-she-could, but America deserves much more than smiles...

Vincent   October 3rd, 2008 727 GMT

As non-Americans once again we are baffled about what's going on in the US elections, at the stupidity and rhetoric Americans swallow and take for granted. The fact that a Republican even gets, according to the polls, 40%+ of the votes when the current representative of his party with whom he agreed 90% of the time completely ran the country into the ground, is a fact beyond belief.
On the other hand the Bush bashing by many Americans is so hypocritical like he was some natural phemenon that just happened to America and left behind it a waste land. You guys voted for this guy en masse, TWICE!!!!!!! You effectively even let him get away with a coup in 2000.
In any democracy the people get the kind of leadership they deserve. America deserves McCain/Palin as it obviously has not quite learnt its lesson from the past 8 years. The rest of the world will look on in disbelief and your country again will be the butt of every joke for the next four years.
I don't trust Obama, he's too slick for my taste, but at least he stands for something and has half a brain. Come on guys, choose McCain because the guy survived a long term incarceration? That makes him an obvious choice for the presidency? What does one have to do with the other? A guy who for months in his campaign had as a strategy to simply create an avalanche of his smears against his opponent as he didn't have any policies worth mentioning; a guy who doesn't even shrink back from using the deepest economic crisis America has ever seen as a means to further his own political career. It's digusting.
And his running mate? Come on, if you need me to spell it out why Palin isn't exactly presidential material, although looking at the previous level of leadership she fits in seamlessly, you just deserve everything that will be coming at you the next four years, and trust me, if you choose McCain/Palin and think things are tough right now, you ain't seen nothing yet.

Desiree Blomberg   October 3rd, 2008 732 GMT

This is why Sara is so dangerous, she flirts with the audience and I even I feel a warm sensation watching her.

But The U.S is in a very deep crisis, and she could well become president. Is she ready enough, or is her charm enough....

I can honestly say as a American living in Europe, we need a president that is willing to negotiate and understand that the American way is not the only way.... And even if we Americans do not have to accept that fact, we really need to understand it.

Emy   October 3rd, 2008 740 GMT

As an Asian I watched the debate with keen interest because I know that whatever decision the Americans will make on Nov. 4 is bound to affect the rest of the world. I saw a seasoned and definitely more experienced Biden and he convinced me that he is the ONLY qualified candidate for the VP position. I listened very hard trying to understand what Gov. Palin is saying about the Economy, the financial crisis, about Iraq and Afghanistan.... but I didnt really get anything of substance. Obviously, her down-to-earth, hockey mom explanations "pales in" comparison to Sen Biden's clear and straightforward answers... I certainly hope the Average Americans will think really hard before choosing their leaders.

As a woman, I am insulted by Palin's cheesy cliches, cutesy smiles, and constant winking which are clearly designed to cover up her need to dodge questions. I coudn't help but think that if she has the nerve to run for the second highest political position in the most powerful nation, she would, at the very least, come prepared for this debate! Answer questions on critical issues and stop dodging, PLS!!!

If McCain and Biden win in this election, heaven help the Americans... and the rest of the world!

Nenet   October 3rd, 2008 756 GMT

That was the whole trick! Set the bar low!!!- and hear that collective sigh of relief from the Palin camp!!!! Oh yes, she did great-if you were not expecting much! And all that adulation towards her folksy rantings--remember the last time America got duped by another straight-talking, folksy kind of guy? That was eight years ago and look where he got America now??? Forget the accent and lets talk SUBSTANCE!!!!

Joan McDonald   October 3rd, 2008 807 GMT

Watching live in Australia I could not believe my ears. I thought a true debate was one where each party HAD to answer the question asked and not ignore it and change the subject. Palin is to be feared because for someone with her lack of knowledge about the economic and international situations to still go along with this farce and not only become the Vice President but possibly the President of the most powerful nation in the world says a lot about her as a person. Does she have the tiniest clue what running a country like the USA involves. Just because I run a household does not make me capable of managing an international chain of hotels. When she was stating her credentials there was not much difference from reading a CV for a middle management position. Good luck people of the USA.

bren primo   October 3rd, 2008 820 GMT

Palin indeed performed well in the debate but her efforts are still short of swinging the votes to McCain's favor. She is an executive really but not at the magnitude of the White House. She may be a vice president potential but a president? NO WAY! and mind you, she's expected to be a potential president just in case something bad happens to the president. She is a "talker" – Biden is evidently a "DOER".

Hugh Hayes   October 3rd, 2008 828 GMT

This was a real reality check for American voters. If a wide smile and constant flow of rhetoric is qualification for someone to be vice-president of the USA, then Mrs Palin is a shew in.
If mature judgement, facts and intelligent reasoning is the qualification, why Mr Biden wins by a large margin. From outside the States, we live in constant wonder though just how you guys actually consider when you elect a President and running mate. The last four years defies all reasoning. You want more? Then vote for a 72 year old unbelievably wealthy lover of war and his 40 something lover of guns and weekend hockey and we can look forward to more wars, more economic chaos and sadly for the USA, less and less respect

Sharad Agarwal   October 3rd, 2008 910 GMT

Palin came, Palin saw and Palin lost

Catriona   October 3rd, 2008 911 GMT

Biden was likeable, answered the questions he was asked and appeared an intelligent and capable man who would be able to step into the role of President if required. Palin was embarrassing, patronised the audience with colloquisims and never seemed to leave the scripted answers she had memorised.

Satish Peri   October 3rd, 2008 940 GMT

Do we really need to put some heads into this debate. They ( Republicans ) pretty much raped this country and they want one more chance ? The facts are in front of the nation, show ( Republicans )them the door for the next 40 years !!!

Assiba Johnson   October 3rd, 2008 954 GMT

Firstly, American voters should ask themselve if a change is needed in America? Who is today the best team holding the key of the change that will bring a better life in America? The answer is: Obama and Joe. Voting for McCain and Palin means simply that Americans don't want to give back to the United State of American the strenght that it uses to have in the World and that it lost under the Bush Administration. We can all see how Obama and Joe with the Democrats are settled to lead America. I appreciate a lot Obama's love for America and the positive change is fighting to bring to Americans. I am not American myself but I have a family there and have American nephews. From what I hear from them everyday, I am very sad. Please, Americans please vote Obama with the Democrats to bring Peace, Wealth... or I will say a Well-being in America again. Thanks. Assiba from Ireland.

Indian President   October 3rd, 2008 1045 GMT

Heartless Americans, you shouldn't be so critical of Gov. Palin. Just because you don't like Bush, its unfair to say all republicans are idiots. what is there in Obama that you are so confident of risking your american pride. i see more character and value in McCain-Palin than in big talking Osama-Liden.

Peter   October 3rd, 2008 1056 GMT

When I see Palin I do think that she could actually offer the US people "something". However she should try a position in the chamber and people will be able to see where she really stands and how she would perform in a larger arena rather than just reading a script.
At least with the other candidates you can look at their records and make a decision, with Sarah you are taking a huge gamble...noones ever thought about Alsakan politics until a month ago.

Mr. Pep   October 3rd, 2008 1121 GMT

Well done Biden,
Now is not the time for Americans to gamble with a completely green, inexperienced political novice who's only rallying calls were frankly from bar stickers, bumper stickers, etc.
Palin needs time to mature politically and in national service. What is most frustrating is that she is seemingly clueless about the issues of the day. Her performance on the debate was more of what a student would do: cramming facts, then quickly reproduce them during the exam, and then forget everything thereafter.
Biden has the necessary experience, character and maturity to prop up Obama and also handle significant issues that are emerging daily.
Palin – Needs time and more national public service experience to reach her potential;
McCain – 'You can't teach an old dog new tricks': America doesn't need another war in Iran or elsewhere. McCain's war veteran record is good, but not necessary for addressing America's more pressing issues;
Obama – Be a good listener and diplomat in handling issues, rather than try to smother the rest of the world with "American superiority", which has waned off now;
Biden – Keep it up. You are what Obama needed to balance off the ticket;
Hillary Clinton – next Secretary of State?

Owen   October 3rd, 2008 1121 GMT

Palin got waxed in this debate, plain and simple. Biden's mastery of the issues and ability to communicate his message effectively was such a stark contrast to Palin's tried and true, canned rhetoric, much of it ill-informed and downright head-scratching. Palin just revealed herself as the empty vessel that she is (we don't need SNL for that!). God help us that we get another "dumbed down" candidate. Look what happened the last time we fawned over a lower-the-bar, folksy, aw shucks candidate. America is smarter than that and deserves better.

sean   October 3rd, 2008 1139 GMT

You can trust Americans to get it wrong! They love Palin!!HOW!.. Gosh! you guys are so basic and superficial..Look at France, UK,Spain,Germany..which of these countries have a leader thats as dumb as Palin? How can you decide upon a couched baby sitter as your VP..Come on guys! Stop this joke...

Desmond Graham   October 3rd, 2008 1156 GMT

Senator Biden did what it says on the packet – statesman like and coherent. Govenor Palin was subfuse and folksy with a rictus smile that undid many of her good moments; Ultimately, Biden wins on content. I can't believe that Govenor Palin would hold her own with some of the wolves on the international poliical circuit. Next to her Chancellor Merkel sounds like a Titan.

As the man once said all politcs are local. However, being patronised by Govenor Palin doesn't do much for US international relations.

Jacob   October 3rd, 2008 1156 GMT

I am a republican and I am just shocked at this "THING" on the stage. Her performance was more of a rambling. I think my teenager has better diction and vocabulary. Honestly, I think republicans knew before hand that this is not a match. This debate was just all about survival for them. You cannot teach someone years of experience, education and politicaly ins and outs over night. I probably would remain republican. However, it scares the living daylights out of me that if something were to happen to The President. This young lady, Palin will bring the house of cards down. I have to sleep over this debate just to relax my nerves as to why in the good god's world Mcain would pick this sub-standard candidate for Vice Presidency.

Ken   October 3rd, 2008 1206 GMT

There was some spice and a few jabs, but I thought the VP debate was even and civil . . . no clear winner in my view. Gov Palin was folksy and looked pretty; Sen Biden was easy-going and had a great smile. I believe these 2 could have good chemistry if they were working together. Since I don't like Obama or McCain, it would be nice if we could shuffle the cards. Say, how 'bout a Biden-Palin ticket?

korrina   October 3rd, 2008 1206 GMT

Biden showed experience and credibility to every answer. Palin on the other showed her inexperience. Being tutored for a week on world affairs and the bigger economy does not make you a VP indeed not for superpower like America. It is inevitably up to the American people but if they chose McCain-Palin it will be the same rheteric of the Bush administration and no change for a country that deeply needs change not only its on economy but in the greater world.

Joel Ly   October 3rd, 2008 1221 GMT

I’m an Asian guy with many years’ experiences in Africa suggest that: if you’re American, love USA with prospered economy cast your vote for Republican (McCain-Palin); in contrary just vote for Democrat.
Have you seen a single African Country is or on the way to become a developing one, they are so good to make speech but no job done, be careful! I can predict that Wall Street will collapse if Obama is selected for cause of fears and generation of uncertainties.
Make your smart choice,
May God Bless USA!

I'm surprised that so many people feel that Palin held her own in the debate. While I concur she didn't crack and clearly demonstrated her ability to memorize all possible buzz words related to the campaign, she ultimately didn't answer any questions.

Regardless of political platform, I'm tired of the inability of someone in the public eye to state their views in a forthright manner. Palin is the worst, and I must say that behavior was not lost on me.

I am not charmed by anyone who wants to represent me and the country I love with a lot of "goshes" and "golly gee" antics. And what a disappointment that the media hasn't pushed her on this, or McCain.

Donald   October 3rd, 2008 1249 GMT

maybe it is me who isnt getting it: how can viewers say that Joe Biden performed better than Sarah Palin without taking into consideration the fact that Biden has been in Washington for 35 years debating and hosting the media and Ms. Palin is yet to go to Washington. people instead should praise Palin for being a prodigy! i opine that Ms.Palin outdebated and outperformed Biden. An analogy: if Chad National Men Basketball Team holds American Dream Team to a draw, who will have won?

okiya   October 3rd, 2008 1253 GMT

I watched the debate and Palin reminded me of my deskmate in primary school who was good in reciting poems, Biden well done but Palin should not be your camera, we needed to see your face as u aticulated issues sir

S Das   October 3rd, 2008 1256 GMT

"CNN Political Commentator and Republican Strategist" Ed Rollins gave Palin some 40+ points and kept a straight face in the post-debate discussion. Is he crazy? Which kool-aid did he drink?

Charles Soldier   October 3rd, 2008 1301 GMT

As an American who believes in and fights for this country, I believe that John McCain would make an OK president. However, Sarah Palin is not qualified to be VP. I do not want a common or average person in a position to lead our exceptional country. Our citizens and Soldiers deserve the best and the brightest, but it seems in this case that desires and opinions are overwhelming common sense. Palin is not a brilliant scholar, someone with sound ideas on leading the nation, or better than average. So, as I sit here overseas watching and hoping that she will not mess up, I realize that she is NOT someone that I can believe in. I wish that I had the ability to be blind as some of the people who have posted comments today, but as I a Soldier in harms way, I can only deal with the day-today truths. Low expectations and achieving the standard is not the measure of which we need to qualify someone as being capable of becoming the leader of the free world.

Although it is difficult for me to express my opinion given my current occupation, it does not preclude me from stating the facts. I have seen common people do exceptional things, but I have see brilliant Generals, Officers, NCO's, and Soldiers lead during grave and dire circumstances. So, I believe that I know leadership when I see it. Sen. McCain, Sen. Clinton, Sen. Biden, Sen. Obama, Pres. Ragan, MLK, Pres. Truman, Elizabeth Cody Stanton, Wangari Maathai, and many others displayed leadership. Gov. Palin does not even rank anywhere close to being half as intelligent as any of them. Moreover, she cannot even handle a simple interview. So, I am supposed to accept, while defending our nation RIGHT NOW, that she can out smart the other leaders and terrorist of the world. It is obvious that McCain is an OK choice, but, come on, Palin is not a leader.

Lynn   October 3rd, 2008 1326 GMT

Great job Sarah !!!!

Sally   October 3rd, 2008 1328 GMT

I did not like Joe Biden before this debate. I truly am impressed with him before. He looks professional, intelligent, and answers all of the questions very well. I have no idea what Palin said except that she is cute. Maybe she should be a spokesmodel for McCain instead of a VP candidate. I have no idea what McCain was thinking when he picked her. I am embarrased for the Republican party.

Santana Nottage   October 3rd, 2008 1342 GMT

I think that it is funny that no one seems to see the fact that the same amount of people who believe that Governor Palin won the debate happen to be the same amount of people that still support President Bush. "curious"

Lets hear it for intelligence.

Mary Kelly   October 3rd, 2008 1357 GMT

The debate just confirmed what most voters believe, that Joe Biden is qualified to be president in case of any emergency and that Sara Palin has disire but not much knowledge or experience to be the one who answers the phone at 3 AM. I think that John McCain did not think far enough ahead when he picked her as a running mate, only as to getting the votes to win. That does not impress me as he should be looking at the whole picture when determining the future of our country, not just winning at all costs. It was also not fair to Sarah Palin who might not have a political future after this election.

Alice Ng   October 3rd, 2008 1359 GMT

As a foreigner watching the debate, I am surprised America would lower its standards and expectations so significantly just to cater to Sarah Palin. I am also surprised that a number of Americans think the VP position is not significant. There is always a possibility that the VP may have to take over should something horrible happen to the President. Would you trust Sarah Palin to be President of the US? She may come across as a fresh face, pretty to look at and someone whom you think you can relate to, but she is not White House material. The debate exposed one thing which was clear for all to see: Biden is knowledgeable and experienced, Palin obediently reads off a script.

Palin should just stay in Alaska and continue to be a hockey mum there. I don't dislike her, but I think the stakes are too high for America to have a VP like her. She would not even qualify to be a VP in my country.

JJ   October 3rd, 2008 1402 GMT

Gosh darn it Sarah Palin has set the womens movement back 10 years. You betcha she gave better prepared answers than she did in the interview with Katie Couric, but that was such a low bar to get over, doncha think? I betcha "joe 6 pack" was sitting by the TV drooling while his wife "jane 6 kids" was taking care of the household business.
Can you imagine this"folksy flake" actually talking to world leaders about serious subjects? Get real why doncha. She and McCain remind me of Lil Abner and Daisy Mae, darn tootin they do.

linda kent   October 3rd, 2008 1414 GMT

it is time to give the government back to the people. the mc cain /palin ticket will do that.

Antony Gilliam - from Nice, France   October 3rd, 2008 1417 GMT

I woke up a 3 a.m. this morning in Nice France to listen to the debate in its original version. I think Biden won the debate largely, and felt that Palin was full of clichés, avasive, and avoiding substance ... but what I felt most of all is that she would only be a token as vice president to McCain, and he would never consult her for advice or take her advice seriously ... on the other hand, I think Obama would listen to different political suggestions coming from Biden.

At 3 in the morning, this debate woke me up a little more than the Obama – Mc Cain debate, but also woke me up to the joke that the McCain-Palin team is.

Marie, Denmark   October 3rd, 2008 1418 GMT

I watched the debate last night, and although Palin managed coherent sentences, she failed to answer many of the questions, and answered others several time repeating herself. Biden did very well I thought, and is much more informed and has a much deeper understanding of the issues.

I don't understand why does her folksy charm add as a positive? Could I vote I wouldn't want folksy, I would want a well educated, intelligent, and deep thinking president /vice president, why is elite a dirty word in connotation with a world leader?

grrzilla   October 3rd, 2008 1428 GMT

Whoa Jonathan! Were you also pounding shooters every time Palin said the clearly mis-used word "Maverick"? Needless to say, America has a terrible hangover this morning. The title of this movie is Gidget and the ill-tempered Moon Doggie go to Washington.

Randy , Minnesota   October 3rd, 2008 1513 GMT

Gosh darn it, there you go again, let's look ahead and see what we can do to better america. Let's vote for John McCain. Obama needs to go back to the senate and get more experience. Obama is not in touch with America. We do not want taxes raised for those people and business making over $250,000.00. If he does then businesses will be forced to lay off more people and the price of products will go up.

Melissa Usrey   October 3rd, 2008 1604 GMT

This was no debate! Sarah Palin rarely answered the questions and simply used the venue as a forum for her scripted and memorized views. I was most disappointed with the moderator for not calling her on it. Most of the time when Palin spoke, I forgot what question had been posed.

Was the bar set so very low that Palin did well simply by showing up and repeating the same rhetoric used in other speeches?

I was at least comforted to hear some of the media pick up on Palin's avoidance of the questions, but I am dismayed at the lack of public awareness of what was clearly a coached espousal of the McCain-Palin party line.

Rebecca   October 3rd, 2008 1608 GMT

Did Palin read a PDA during the debate? She looked down while Biden spoke but it appeared she was reading something rather than writing. Were her lines fed to her?

Dean   October 3rd, 2008 1644 GMT

I think that more questions should have been addressed. There was too much back and forth between the candidates, talking about a point that was brought up 2 questions ago. They needed to focus more on their own points and what they intend to do once in office, and less on tearing down the other in an effort to appear better.

rationalpsychic   October 3rd, 2008 1728 GMT

I couldn't believe that they agreed not to use "gay marriage" as an agenda. However, I'm much more impressed by the person who can address issues on several levels (Biden) rather than just tossing out responses rehearsed before the debate (Palin).

This is why she suffered so badly during interviews with Couric. In an interview situation there are follow-up questions that require thought and a synthesis of learned information with a response to the question. Watch another interview and see if she sinks or swims.

politixican   October 3rd, 2008 1739 GMT

Governor Sarah Palin took the bull by the horns (or in this case, she took Biden by the hair-plugs) and won this debate outright with substance and style! She showed America that she is well-versed in a broad array of social and governmental issues, and conveyed her and running mate Senator John McCain's campaign message honestly and in a fashion relatable to the common American. This was a great moment, and I firmly believe that she has taken one more big step towards a Republican administration come election day (or some time thereafter, given the near certainty that democratic tactics in Ohio and elsewhere will cause electoral pause for reconciliation of an accurate count). See my site for more.

Claude Fortin   October 3rd, 2008 1826 GMT

Palin would be great as a school president...

She learns her lessons well....

She's even more brilliant than G.W.Bush...

She doesn't use complicated words like Obama and Biden do....

Her solutions to complicated problems are simple...

Biden speaks of foreign countries...he's probably a communist...

My vote goes to Palin...Her performance was outstanding...she looked so happy ....and who would want to put an end to all these beautiful things G.W. did for America and the world?

After all earth was created only 10 000 years ago by a man with a white beard!

It actually took him only 6 days! So lets give the republicans 4 more years and their simplistic approach will give us even better results!

drslogan   October 3rd, 2008 1835 GMT

The debate was certainly interesting in many aspects, particularly in demonstrating that we've entered the gloves-off territory. Sen. Biden lied throughout the debate without blinking. The single claim that his new boss has never said he'd sit down with Ahmadinejad with no preconditions was an astonishing lie, given the broad availability of the video that shows Obama making that very promise.
Biden was serving Kool-Aid '08 all night and has proven that he was a good pick for Obama. The only hope is that more people will start asking themselves the real Is America Ready? question and get the facts straight before they vote.

erinmontague   October 3rd, 2008 1846 GMT

It appears that McCains handlers have been very busy pumping Palin full of repetitive blather. Blech.

This joke explains her best:

While suturing a cut on the hand of a 75-year old Texas rancher whose hand was caught in a gate while working cattle, the doctor struck up a conversation with the old man. Eventually the topic got around to Sarah Palin and her bid to be a heartbeat away from being President.

The old rancher said, 'Well, ya know, Palin is a post turtle.'

Not being familiar with the term, the doctor asked him what a post turtle was. The old rancher said, ' When you're driving down a country road and you come across a fence post with a turtle balanced on top, that's a post turtle.'

The old rancher saw a puzzled look on the doctor's face, so he continued to explain.

'You know she didn't get up there by herself, she doesn't belong up
there, she doesn't know what to do while she is up there, and you just
wonder what kind of dumb ass put her up there to begin with.'

irvroth   October 3rd, 2008 1856 GMT

Palin is a true performer. She is charming in some respects. But when it comes to replying to questions, she is all words that have no relation to the query. When ahe has no knowledge relating to a question, she merely repeats her memorized response,"I support john McCain. I fail to see why so much attention is paid to the vice presidency. It was never an important position. Only when the V.P. is promoted to the President position does this choice bear importance. Do we want a person with no knowledge or experience in national politics or global situations? Palin can't even govern her own family.

nascentliterati   October 3rd, 2008 1927 GMT

Sorry, Jonathan, I appreciated that Biden didn't play to the camera and I'd much prefer to hear the candidates' stances on policy rather than that they looked at me. I mean what does that mean. She's not looking at me. She's looking at the camera. How should I know what the camera represents to her. Maybe the camera person helps her to feel comfortable. Believe it or not, CNN or any other news agencies, some of us really do want to get an idea of what the candidates think on a variety of issues. Joe Biden answered every question. The fact that Sarah Palin ducked a few just shows me she doesn't know enough.

master   October 3rd, 2008 2008 GMT

Biden did a great job on the debate!

Peggy Archer   October 4th, 2008 006 GMT

When I was watching the debate, I very clearly saw what looked like an earpiece in Palin's ear.

Was she wearing a headset so she could be prompted?

Cristina   October 4th, 2008 143 GMT

I dont understand how moronic people here can be! Obama is as inexperienced as Palin. The only difference is that she got picked and Obama is overyly ambitious. Obama has not even finished his first term as a Senator. What experience are we talking about then? He is running for President and Palin is not. If I was Biden, I would be asking myself why he's running for VP under someone who is less experience and more ignorant than him.

Blame the Bush Administration! GIVE ME A BREAK. The Democrats are of the SAME FAULT here to whatever is happening to our country as the DEMOCRATS. I think people are forgetting that the Congress are MOSTLY DEMOCRATS and they are the ones making the LAWS. The President can VETO and APPROVE IT.

Most of the economic problems seen today are way back from the CLINTON ADMINISTRATION when most of these DEREGULATIONS were made.

If I were you PEOPLE, do your HOMEWORK. You have people here write their views with shallow reasons behind them.THE ONLY THING WORSE THAN THE IGNORANT MASSES, IS THE IGNORANT INTELLECTUALS.

Dr. Strangelove   October 4th, 2008 2009 GMT

A plague on both parties for derailing this country. So the question remains – which party will be the least deleterious to the country? Look to the past 8 years for the answer.

Burr Deming   October 4th, 2008 2229 GMT

So your opinion is restricted to style and mannerisms, nothing of substance?

Governor Palin did very well for herself.

Joe Biden merely did well for Obama.

But I have not yet heard anyone from any side express any concern about the most dangerous possibility if Governor Palin is elected to national office.

lumay   October 5th, 2008 018 GMT

What I find most disturbing about this whole debate isn’t what actually went on in the debate itself (which I sat & watched with two of my children here in Australia) – it is the response by so many in the media judging it on such superficial grounds and positioning Ms Palin in such a positive light.
That’s OK for those who did watch it & had the intelligence to understand the game play going on! But what about all those American voters who didn’t watch it, listen to all this crap assessment by the media, & now think she has proven she’s up to the job??
To say that I am further disillusioned by the media is an understatement – I expected better of CNN especially. I know it sometimes goes both ways, but this repsonse really makes me doubt their intelligence, let alone their honesty!

Matthew   October 6th, 2008 855 GMT

If you are buying into the Palin/ McCain package of LIES, then please feel free to build yourself a little Island somewhere far from the US and let them control you there. I think that we Americans have had enough B.S. from the Disgusting and Dated Republican Party. Just go back to the Republican speeches and look at the crowd, White, Old, and Clueless. Thanks for screwing up the Country and making fools out of the real thinkers. Let's just pray that THIS election isn't rigged as the last 2 have been.

2hamburg   October 8th, 2008 020 GMT

Please please stick to the facts and what is going to happen to our economy,...we are a laughing stock around the world..why cant we see this..its just going really in the wrong direction....i see the negative adds and candidates wasting time on defense...come on...its time to talk money, education, and govt.....

Chris B   October 8th, 2008 1202 GMT

McCain the Big Clown

If McCain is telling the American nation on TV that he "knows how to catch Bin ..." and has the guts to put his campaign on hold to sort out the Washinton mess .. "oh boy" I tell you we are sleeping with an enermy. Why don't he suspend his campaign and show the American nation that he is a hero..go out there and catch Bin..This will ease up his campaign and win all the votes republicans, democrats, independants, you name it all.

What I like about Obama is that he doesn't commit himself with fallacies. He sticks to reality... We understand McCain is an old man. He dreams a lot and think we can buy his dreams.. McCain its time to wake up. This is the American lives at heart you playing with. Its he lives of the poor, middle, and high income you playing with.
