By accident or design, Sarah Palin approaches the vice presidential debate that's just hours away with a significant advantage: expectations.

Sarah Palin has been criticized by the media.
Sarah Palin has been criticized by the media.

The US media are so full of critical comment and outright ridicule, that any reasonable person would expect Palin to perform miserably against Joe Biden. Whether in newspaper columns or television comedy shows, Palin has been portrayed as inarticulate, uninformed and utterly unqualified. You'd practically expect her to injure herself on the microphone.

What will the impact be? Republican voters – who tend to distrust the mainstream media anyway – are likely to feel sympathetic and even more supportive. Democrats? Well, even before the debate they haven't bothered to hide their disdain for her. A few of them stand to be surprised if she does well.

But independent and undecided voters may be the key to this election right now. If she can impress them with a strong, serious presence on stage, she may move the Republican ticket back up in the polls a bit. If not, all the negatives in the news media will be multiplied many times over.

she will do fine.. and all bad wishers will look for smallest details to try to bring her down..but no luck in bashing her.
she will come thru with flying colors .. go sarah !

Georgemia   October 2nd, 2008 1522 GMT

Oh good, if she answers no questions with facts, offers stumbling non sequiturs, nonsense, and sound bites, but does not actually soil herself, she wins?

The woman is running as Vice President, and she is not unlikely to be president, given McCain's age and history of a stage 3B melanoma.

She needs to be seriously evaluated as a possible president, not as "America's Next Top Moose Hunter."

Mark   October 2nd, 2008 1533 GMT

I was in Alaska last summer, and Palin was greatly appreciated there. Alaska has a long history of corrupt governors and legislators, and she was respected because Big Oil hadn't found a way to bribe or otherwise corrupt her (Sheffield is rumored to have gotten high-class call girls and a yacht, and the last govenor got a Learjet and a mansion). That she's thumbed her nose at the lot that's helped kill the US economy and encouraged the country to invade Iraq says a lot about her character. Shame she's a Republican.

Sabatini   October 2nd, 2008 1542 GMT

All she has to do is smile and try not to blunder too much (perhaps recite some statements and wave)and then public opinion will declare her winner of the debate. Shame on us Americans for lowering our leadership standards

sandy   October 2nd, 2008 1552 GMT

In case you haven't noticed, the spin by McCain is already set. If she does well, we told you she was great, if she stumbles, it's the media's or the moderator fault.
Never in the history of the US has anyone so totally unqualified run for such an important office. Perhaps it is time to consider adding some additional requirements in order to run for President & VP beyond where you were born and how old you are.
The potential for disaster here is beyond words, being VP is not a "learn how to do this on the job" position. Especially with a 72 year old candidate running for President!!!!!

Wally©   October 2nd, 2008 1557 GMT

She's gonna go like...'Hey..Ask me about any Supreme Court dicision I disagree with ?"

That way she can make up for her 'supreme' gaff she made yesterday...again !!!

Go...go...Joe !!!!

Have her for dinner...but eat with style !!!!

And for goodness sake...don't eat her brains !!!!

Tee Dee Bee   October 2nd, 2008 1559 GMT

Why is that Sarah Palin is not able to answer the simply questions that are important to any "PERSON" running for such a high position, and the media and American people don't fear her sound judgement. The fact that she has been questioned on several ocassions and several time and have not, for whatever reason, not been able to answer the questions properly. If for no other reason but pure understanding, she should be able to articulate her knowledge of these issues. In my opinion, I would very nervous sending Sarah to represent or defend policies or strageies with anyone.

Other women in the polictical arena have shown their capablities, we as a people should not make any acceptions for anyone. Our country has many complex and serious problems, and we need strong, capable leaders equipped to lead us forward.

A concerned voter.

Elaine O'Shaughnessy   October 2nd, 2008 1601 GMT

Surely there must be some way for Sarah Palin to bow out gracefully from the Republican nominee for V.P, if not please invent one.
She can not be expected to continue with any credibility after the major faux pas in the latest interviews.
Someone has to throw her a life raft.

wade sabean   October 2nd, 2008 1608 GMT

It appears that the US Media is trying by design or accidentally to enfluence the American Elections. They ridicule Mrs. Palin at every corner but don't ridicule Obama who is very inexperienced and in fact if they are adamant that Mrs. Palin is inexperienced then Obama is equally. It is very dangerous to have such an inexperienced person at the top of the ticket. It is interesting that in times where there is so MUCH anti incumbancy towards Republicans that Obama is BARELY ahead of McCain!!!!! People know and recognize that Obama is NOT experienced enough and has a slight edge because of the Media's constact and unjustified attack on Mrs. Palin. Is it because she is a Woman??? Afterall in the debates between Mrs. Clinton and Obama, Obama showed much contempt for Mrs. Clinton who by the way is his significant SUPERIOR when it comes to politics and ability.

Pat   October 2nd, 2008 1618 GMT

After reading blogs and numerous stories concerning the debate I must wonder – why do democrats fear Governor Palin? Can one of the supporters of socialism (or followers of Obama) please tell me why you fear someone who has more leadership and executive experience than your savior?

concerned conspiracy theorist   October 2nd, 2008 1618 GMT

It actually doesn't matter how well or how badly she does.

Palin is like the Golden Retriever puppy in the tissue ad. She's cute and fuzzy and serves to bring attention to a product (McCain) that is, like tissue, not able to garner the attention on his own.

However, the quality and appropriateness of the underlying product is the issue. If your tissure fails, the clean-up is fairly easy, if unpleasant.

We have 8 years of presidential mismanagement to clean up now. We don't need another 4 years.

Rick   October 2nd, 2008 1625 GMT

Obama is senator over like 11.8 million people, and understands international affairs. Palin negotiates with the people of her home town so her old house by the lake will meet zoning restrictions. How can one say she has more experience? Do Alaskians have any real problems anyway, being flush with all the earmark and oil money?

She's a promising politician. No way is she ready to be VP, let alone prez.

McCain made this reckless choice, and Sarah goes "under the bus" because of his lack of judgement.

mugwamp   October 2nd, 2008 1637 GMT

Low expectations a strength? She is already showing that her political talent is below mediocrity. Are we to reward even lower expectations with the attribute of strength? She does not know the questions she will get. Just like when she is on hunt for food, and gets asked a question by a voter. Her handlers are correct in keeping her out of the light, until after election day. The fact that they feel they have to keep her under wraps, speaks volumes about what they know about her. Otherwise she would be out there spilling her guts, with no qualms.

Arthur   October 2nd, 2008 1654 GMT

People are not evaluating Sarah Palin correctly. They are seeing her merely as a VP, a position to which she may be adequately suited.
As Vice-President all she needs to do is receed into the woodwork and occasionally come out to garner support from her working class believers-serving as a translator for John Mccain who would be speaking from the White House(the one mansion he doesn't own).
But given Mccains age, we need to evaluate her as a President. For this she is woefully lacking. The tough talk which she showed the convention was all carefully practiced and scripted. World events are not scripted. I would prefer to have a president who has exhibited brilliance in his intellectual persuits and has proven himself capable of intelligent measured thought in charge of my destiny.

Donna   October 2nd, 2008 1654 GMT

I don’t quite understand why on earth Biden has to treat Palin as though she is going to break – I’m sure she’d be the first shouting about equality between the sexes in any other circumstance (a little convenient to forget that now though eh!).

Republican   October 2nd, 2008 1654 GMT

Pat,

People fear Palin because they fear a lack of intelligence and morals in the White House. They fear it for multiple reasons:
- In the long term (decades), the US will decline unless it reverses the trend where science and rationality loses out to irrational christian fatwas and dogmas. The Christian right has much irrationality, intolerance, etc. in common with the Islamic fundamentalists and people fear that.
- In the short term, a lack of intelligence may hurt, because, frankly, one needs enough intelligence to better judge the results of ones actions. Take the way the Iraq war was started (on the basis of simplistic assumptions and a lack of intelligent intelligence gathering), take how simplistic economic theories create a society that is becoming more banana republic as it develops.
- The lack of morals depicted by the way real facts are covered by sleaze, fear mongering and outright lies (think bridge to nowhere, think ads that even make Karl Rove say McCain has gone too far) makes many fear the prospect of having such a lack of ethics in teh White House.

Though republican's are far better at playing on the emotions of voters, this time they may have gone too far and that, in combination with th eeconomy, might get the US a "Lecturer in chief". This will be good (like Eisenhower was good for the US) but given the war the fanatics fought against Clinton during his terms in office there is a chance that even if Obama wins, the slide into fearful fundamentalism in teh US is unstoppable.

Bill   October 2nd, 2008 1710 GMT

Palin is clearly a wanting choice for VP. The biggest danger for Biden in this debate is himself. He can very easily for the trap of being condescending or bullying. He must be respectful, earnest and stay away from attacks on character, because he is expected to do so and that might alienate the public. If he would just stick to the issues and his experience, where he is superior, and it would be a regular democratic landslide.

Jeannie Felts   October 2nd, 2008 1713 GMT

Tonight is the VP debate – and I don’t know if I can stand to watch it. Sarah Palin embarrasses me – she reminds me of the "ditsy" wife of some guy in the neighborhood who everyone likes, or at least tolerates, but about whom everyone secretly 'rolls their eyes' over at neighborhood parties. I really think I would like her personally – she isn't a bad person – just a person who doesn't belong at the level she has reached. As an intelligent female I find her dim-witted behavior embarrassing – she is, I think, what most men really think of women – that we aren't terribly bright – but they will tolerate the cute ones among us for sex. This saddens me that someone like Sarah is so obviously in the public eye – I would not have been embarrassed by Hillary or any number of other intelligent, well informed women who could have been there – but Sarah – she is embarrassing in some sort of deep-down visceral way that's hard to explain. I want her GONE – if for no other reason, I want McCain to lose so she can disappear from TV and newspaper stories and I can pretend she was just a very bad dream.

rachae   October 2nd, 2008 1723 GMT

I can tell you why we fear Palin. She is a bimbo. She can't even complete a sentage and struggles with very simple questions.

Reply to Pat   October 2nd, 2008 1733 GMT

Why would you call Obama a socialist, if W and his boys suggested a socialist bailout? Your guy McPalin also approves of this socialist bailout. Is he a socialist too? You make me sick. Sick that in the US, ignorance is still so wide spread...all the way to your choice for VP. Which, may also imply that John is not the brightest for picking an idiot running mate.

tryingtohard   October 2nd, 2008 1739 GMT

I think the Republicans deserve what they get. If McCain wins the election and just happens to kick the bucket, then we ALL get to have her as our Commander and Chief. Sweet !!!

Can you imagine that for one moment? Seriously... Just imagine that scenario for a moment. With the crippled economic situation we are going through, she'll bury the country like no other (not even 'W').

But...what the heck, let's give her a try. Should be fun for all of us ;-)

Dale, Cincinatti   October 2nd, 2008 1743 GMT

It is so sad...this isn't even a debate. I thought a debate was putting the candidates together and each of them tries to outwit each other. Testing the others knowledge TRYING to stump them and showing the audiance who is better qualified for the position.

Instead, it is going to be Joe Biden trying to avoid making Sarah Palin look like a fool. And Sarah Palin defending John McCain.

This debate is set up to be very dull!

Let them go out and battle each other in a test of knowledge and show of leadership. THATS WHAT A DEBATE IS.....Not the non issue centered foolishness we are about to witness.

Turk   October 2nd, 2008 1747 GMT

The woman was mayor of WASILIA!!! PEOPLE!!! friggin Wasilia! Then 2 years as Alaska Gov. What executive decisions you talking about? In tha case why didn't Macain went with former Mayor of NY, it makes more sense for the claim. Any given day in NYC city hall cranks out more than one month worth of "executive decision" you creationism preachers regurgitate over and over. This woman has been chosen for one reason only, and you know it, say it proudly or don't say it at all if you are ashamed. Don't try to fool anybody with this nonsense "executive decision" lame excuse. Small town my behind, if GOP thesis is that any avearge small town people can run the friggin country, the last eight years has already proved otherwise.

SANDY   October 2nd, 2008 1750 GMT

I feel that she wil do much better than in her interviews. After all that cramming at the McCain ranch, she will have had to retain something! The fact that everyone is expecting more of the same will definitely playout in her favor and will make her look like a winner even if she does only marginally well. Please people, focus on the facts. No matter what, she is ill equipped for the position. She is a typical politician, find corruption in your opponent, and when you are elected, do the very same thing that you found so appalling.By that I mean using your power to get whatever you want accomplished, regardless of ethics.

Patrick Henry   October 2nd, 2008 1753 GMT

I disagree.
I believe the American people have high expectations for Sarah Palin.
1–She is for all Americans not just the Washington circle.
2- She understand poverty..and will affect legislation that may help end it or at least alleviate it.
3- She is driven by the documents, words of our founding fathers.
4- She is honest and forthright about her origins and her aspirations.
5.-She has the character and commitment to follow through on her promises..or publicly concede defeat.
6.- She will never dilineate her role as mother of her children to any career. The career post will have to adapt to her–or she will go elsewhere. How many women in America have had to forfeit their career aspirations because an all male dominated world–refused to allow them to make some reasonable exceptions?

She will be a valued asset in improving our economy–and improving women's rights to a reasonable workable schedule–which includes their children.

Hindy Abelson   October 2nd, 2008 1808 GMT

There’s no way that Angela Merkel or the late Benazair Bhutto or Golda Meir or even the arch conservative Margaret Thatcher would have complained about sexist questions and still had the audacity to call themselves pit bulls. These are the women who earned their political stripes through brilliance, insight, idealism, diplomacy, knowledge and political acquity (with or without lipstick). Shame on you McCain for pulling this dumb stunt on the American people by selecting an empty rifle toting, creationist, witchunting, bible thumping woman who can’t even speak English to possibly lead the free world should you die in office (something any 73 year old with melanoma would have considered if he really put country before politics.)

I sincerely hope that when Biden looks at Palin, he treats her as the dangerous, retrograde force that she is – rather than a delicate little flower who wilts under the weight of legitimate political questions. Do all women a huge favor and drag her over the coals just as you would any man. If she can’t stand the heat, she should do feminists a huge favor and go back to killing moose from airplanes, banning books, hunting witches, preaching creationism and leave US politics to men and women who operate under the same set of rules. Anything else would be sexual pandering of the lowest order. SHOW ALL WOMEN LIKE MYSELF HOW LIBERATED THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY REALLY IS. STICK IT TO HER BIDEN. SHE DESERVES IT. SO DOES MCSHAME.

A potential VP who makes George Bush look clued-up on foreign affairs, just what the country needs......

Sarah Palin? reminds me of the other famous Palin – I'm sure her nomination is an elaborate Monty Python-like prank.

I can see the HSBC offices from my office building, does that qualify me as an investment banker? – Ridiculous!!!

Fay   October 2nd, 2008 1832 GMT

This is for Pat who as left a note about why do democrats fear Palin!!! They do not fear her. They just fear that she has too much experience with foreign relations looking at Russia through her kitchen window!!! Go Senator Biden. For god sake show us what real brain is about

David   October 2nd, 2008 1836 GMT

...well look at Bubba. Granted he ran for pres and not v.p., he wasn't all that experienced running a nation, was he? Gov. of Arkansas for how many years??? At least Palin ran her own business, and was mayor of a small town in addition to being Alaska's gov. She brings a wealth of knowledge to the table regarding small businsses and their worrys, worrys of small town America, etc. If the media would shut up for at least a few minutes and hear what she has to say, they may find a diamond in the rough. I believe she'll do fine. Granted she'll have a tough time of it debating Biden, but I believe she will hold her own and come through this debate just fine.

jonathan   October 2nd, 2008 1838 GMT

everything is ok but why cnn is using that twisted eye picture of biden on the frontpage

Toni   October 2nd, 2008 1845 GMT

Looking at this debate from the outside does beg the question as to why there is such pressure on Mr. Biden not to be condesending, harsh , etc.

As women we always ask to be treated as equals and especially as a possible key leader of the free world, wide ranging knowledge should be second nature and dealing with a few bumps is just a part of the terrain.

patrick o'toole   October 2nd, 2008 1846 GMT

Oh Pat, come on. Even the most ardent republicans dont realistically think mayor of tinyville alaska and (very) short term as Governor of Alaska accompanied by the First Dude (!!) as leadership or executive experience. McCain is a strong and credible candidate (and I think he would be a good Prez) as I think would either Obama or Biden. But by your reckoning, she has more executive experience than McCain. Dont know why he couldnt choose someone who wouldnt become a laughing stock. He should dump her and get someone whom we could see as a President themselves

Kevin   October 2nd, 2008 1848 GMT

It doesn't matter who McCain picked the Republican base would rally around anyone he picked. Remember when she is elected with McCain and is cancer finally takes his life that she would come to rescue of former Soviet states that are invaded by Russia. Its called World War 3 with nuclear missles. The US will have the advantage since she can see Russia from her house.

No matter what happens tonight the press will be blamed if she does bad. That seems to be the Republican way when something is going wrong BLAME the PRESS.

As Ronald Reagan said during the Carter debate...

" Are you better off now than you were four years ago?

Whether your Republican or Democrat or Independent most of us would simply say NO.

brian   October 2nd, 2008 1854 GMT

The problem is if McCain had asked Palin the same questions that Couric did and got similar reponses, you have to question his judgment in picking her. That said, if Tina Fey shows up tonight she might fare better than Palin will.

Karen   October 2nd, 2008 1857 GMT

I don't understand. Her qualifications can already be judged based on her CV. How is this debate going to change anything? She was not qualified before, and she is not going to be qualified after.

Jennifer   October 2nd, 2008 1904 GMT

I, for one, feel bad for poor Sarah Palin. She is clearly out of her league and bit off far more than she can chew. Even with the most seasoned 'handlers' coaching her along and pulling her leash, this golden retriever puppy will end up a puddle on the floor. Unfortunately, it will be John McCain's job to clean up after yet another one of her accidents. Only THIS accident can't be rectified by bribing her with a few treats.

juliet   October 2nd, 2008 1913 GMT

Go girl Go, Palin will be outstanding! i am a staunch democrart & course vote for Obama, well for the reason of the low life media and laughing at her every move i may change my mind! She is a woman and were not made to fun at, dont you know behind every man there a woman? and with Palin she is 5 woman behind her spouse and Mc Cain, Media better chill out & Saturday nite Night too!

Lesley   October 2nd, 2008 1914 GMT

The reason that Sarah Palin MUST NOTwin the debate is because she is deeply unsuitable to be Vice President of the United States, a heartbeat away from the Presidency. Imagine her as the leader of the Free World – a most terrifying prospect. Palin supporters must remember that they are NOT electing a'best friend' but a powerful leader. GO BIDEN!

Electra   October 2nd, 2008 1931 GMT

The point is this just because she been swotting up, coached hard and revising the points and policy means nothing, she STILL doesnt know anything about the issues effecting America. Anyone can revised hard and remember it, its like swotting for an exam without going to the classes. For my degree finals i spent all the nights before revising and memorisng hard and just spewed on to the page the next morning- I could not tell you ANYTHING about what i learnt. The same with Palin, i predict she will do just fine and actually make Biden fluster and win the debate, cos he'll be trying too hard to avoid the sexism issue not cos she knows anything but she cos she looks good, and Biden and the issues will get swept under the carpet. This is just plain SCARY in the current climate and we in England have a lot invested in this election too, and the world doesnt need an angry old fart and his extremist mooseburger. She aint stupid by a long shot but her actions and views go against everything i believe in whats the saying 'i dont agree with what u say, but i'll fight til the death to perserve ur right to say it' and thats whats dangerous about Palin and do u wanna send her to the international stage!!

Phil   October 2nd, 2008 1932 GMT

What we expect, and what we demand seem to be at odds here, and that is pathetic. Why should we expect a vice presidential candidate to be anything but knowledgeable, clever, and poised? I am upset that our expectations have been lowered because she has shown no ability to deal with the media. We the people deserve a candidate who can recall supreme court cases, newspaper they read, and not get flustered with "gotcha" questions. We should expect and demand more.

Sjones   October 2nd, 2008 1932 GMT

Why should Biden be careful of debating Ms Palin...? is it because she is a woman...she doesnt speak for all woman ,...she is one individual vying for the 2nd biggest job in America so of course the general public expects her to answer with confidence and has she done that....? NO!!!!! Hillary Clinton stood and debated twice as much men and did she falter NO!!! WERE the men warned to cordial etc NO!!! WHAT SHe needs to do is do all women justice and speak with the knowledge "they"alledge she is suppose to have..THAT WOULD BE JUSTICE

Mark   October 2nd, 2008 1938 GMT

It should be an easy win for Biden given Palin's experience and the results of her recent interviews. The key point here that always seems to be downplayed is that, as a previous blogger noted, if the Republicans get elected Palin could eventually become President.

Is this someone who could lead America? This is not a Disney movie where joe average six pack should have a shot at the top job. Like any other complex position (doctor, engineer, etc) would you hire the least qualified person for this particular job? ...sure she's folksy, one with the people, has been 'impressive' in Alaska, a real go-getter... but really, all other things aside... is she the absolute best person for the job?

Claude Fortin   October 2nd, 2008 1940 GMT

Well i tend to agree that independant voters could be impressed if Paulin's performance is good. However there are at least a few conditions.
These independant voters have to believe that an old man with a beard created the universe in 6 days and rested on sunday....
They also have to believe that the Bush administration did a good job and that America's economy is doing fine...
Then and only then will an independant voter choose the McCain ticket .

Patrick Moyna   October 2nd, 2008 1944 GMT

Palin should paint her hair blue to get a more Marge-ish look !! All the US Simpsons would vote for her, and there are many.

Tomy   October 2nd, 2008 1946 GMT

Pat

Isn't a month old to use that lame experience thing. A month old, don't you think???
She has expirience(She can see Russia from her home) is a past and even republicans and Mclame stoped using it. Wake up, people moved from that nonesense and it wasn't even selling....
Here in Europe She is a joke...Is that what USA can
afford and offer to the world...I think your reputation as country is on the line.
If she is elected then believe me you will loose the little friends left in
Europe.
Socialism????...Come to Europe and see if you will find a homeless, toothless, religious fanatics and more importantly uninformed bigots!!!!!
So maybe you need to be a socialist, instead of bunch of biggots, liers and religious fanatics.
And one more thing..That hero thing that Mcidiot claims, we call it murderers.

Paula Boatman   October 2nd, 2008 1955 GMT

If "low expectaton" is a strength, all American women should be ashamed. She should be expected to do just as well as any man having the same opportunity. As a matter of fact, she should be expected to do much better than Biden. After all, you all know that it takes much more get up and go for a woman to achieve the same status in life as a man. Go for it Sara. If you lose, you can always go back to Alaska and kill a moose or shoot a defenseless wolf from a chopper. Make us proud.

leaf   October 2nd, 2008 1957 GMT

how silly to suggest that low expectations on the part of the people the President of the United States will have to lead through all hazards and threats for the next few years could be an advantage! if that kind of premise were true, I'd be the most advantaged person on the planet, as my parents made it clear they expected me to be. but instead I'm just the failure they always expected me to be. but, sleep well, it doesn't matter to you, because I don't have my ginger on the trigger

Republicans made their bet with Sara Palin and now they are having the hardest time stting on it.
McCain had 100 more qualified choices for VP, but he decided to bring a female to the ticket in hopes to gain Hillary's supporters votes.
Its been documented now that she is far from being ready and unfortunately it's too late to get her out of the ticket.
She is a charismatic lady, but she is not the right choice for VP.
Shame on J McCain, that was very irresponsible of him and his judgement is going to be questioned if Sara does bad tonite in the debate.

Stop the insanity!

Dear CNN: I was just wondering.. do you feel that CNN is doing everything that they possibly can to get Obama elected or do you feel that there is something else that you could possibly do to help?

It is such a shame. 70% of Americans feel that the Media is favoring Obama. We the people thirst for the whole story which means both sides. All we get is pummeled with left wing agenda from the alphabet soup media. ABC,NBC,CBS,CNN etc. These media outlets have become left wing agenda drivers instead of news broadcasters. Amazing times we live in, amazing.

Has CNN ever reported that Obama is the most Liberal Senator?

If Rush Limbaugh was the moderator for an Obama McCain debate the left would call it a "lynching".

Sarah Palin's lack of experience is clearly showing in the last few weeks, especially after that miserable interview with Katie Couric. You can't say she was treated unfairly in that interview, she was given straight questions but she answered in political gibberish. How could you trust a person who would be a heartbeat away from the presidency, when she is as ill-equipped as Gov. Sarah Palin. She doesn't know the facts, she is not prepared for the job, and she is blindsided by her lack of discretion!

there was only one lady that could have been president or vice president. that was Hillary. Sarah can't not even be compared to her.

you need to get serious america! go vote! i don't see a "Best" option, but go for the one that's less-worse...for me thats obama – biden.

Paula Boatman   October 2nd, 2008 2115 GMT

Pat, let me tell you why democrats or anyone with an iq higher than 12, for that matter, fear Sara Palin. She could be a heartbeat away from being president . That should speak volumes. How would you like her to be in charge of our economic situation? THINK...

The One   October 2nd, 2008 2116 GMT

She will do fine as most americans have a low expectation of how good she is. She has the gift of debat and her feminine charms to use tonight. When Biden takes the bait, she will try to use this to her advantage. I love the US double standard.

Sonny Spurr   October 2nd, 2008 2120 GMT

You americans are "funny". A very important debate is coming up in a couple of hours and you are concerned about Biden could be too agressive on Palin because shes a woman. If she´s not able to cope with that, she´s not ready to be involved in world politics. Remember, VP together with McCains age, means that she could become P. America had a clown in office for 8 years, and see what that did to your economy and status world-wide. Don´t get yourselfe into that position once more.

The Republicans are finally showing the nation how morally and intellectually bankrupt they are. I would like to thank the following key participants in the party's demise: Quayle, the Bushes, Cheney, McCain and now Palin. McCain should be ashamed of himself– he was supposed to be an elder statesman with experience and knowledge. He is proving to be a man of bad judgement (Iraq, Palin, etc), questionable character (will lie to get a vote), and limited intelligence. It seems that affirmative action for whites is alive and well...... Can we lower the bar any further so Palin can get a passing grade? Does she even have a degree from a reputable university? McCain/Palin are lucky that whites can exercise their racism- otherwise, they would be treated like the JOKE that they are.....

The sad part is that Americans allowed the Republicans to run the good name of the United States of America into the ground. America has lost credibility around the world. Now that Americans owe the world a ton of debt and have no savings, I hope the t.v.'s, cars, and worthless homes will last forever.......

Palin has more leadership and executive experience? I am really curious how you can see the 'experience' Palin has compared to leading a 300 million people country. Leading a village (that's what I would call a 7000 people small community) gives you little clues about leading a big country. The problems you come across are so insignificant in comparison, that bringing it up as 'experience' is just a laughing matter.

The less than 2 years experience as governor she has in Alaska are not much better. Alaska has a smaller population than the average province in the Netherlands, and the things you come across leading it, are still not of any huge proportion. That goes even more for a state that is far away from any big center of power. Not to mention that of that less than 2 years, she even worked from out of house for about 1 year, which does not really help coming across all sorts of issues.

Palin lacks general experience to lead a big country, she lacks the basic knowledge what's happening both within the United States as well as what happens outside of it.

To make matters worse, she so far has been nothing but a lapdog of McCain. A lapdog that is supposed to pull over all female voters that are disappointed with the Democrats not getting Hillary Clinton as candidate. That the campain-team tries/tried to keep her in the roll of pageant queen she is familiar with, is a downright insult to all the women that hoped for some real change in the national politics.

mike g   October 2nd, 2008 2140 GMT

Hi Pat,

Mike from the UK here – and I can answer your question.

Democrats fear Palin because if McCain wins and then has an accident, then this naive individual will be at the helm of your great country. Many Democrats and Conservatives in your country have the intelligence and good sense to see that this is not a hooray moment. Given her lack of international relations beyond helping some Russian planes fly over Alaska, and given that she is against R v W, but agrees with the conclusions, you too should be somwhat fearful, Pat!

If Palin is the Plan B, she's a very bad Plan B.

Mike

Pinkjacket   October 2nd, 2008 2155 GMT

You never know, this could be Obama's undoing. If Biden should become arrogant and underestimate Palin, it could backfire and have profound effect of future outcomes.

bobo   October 2nd, 2008 2157 GMT

why low expectation for VP candidate? why ??? cos she is favored by God? are Americans just too shallow to see through her weak points in everything VP candidates should have ?

Robert B   October 2nd, 2008 2217 GMT

We probably won't get the entertaining break we deserve. Palin has been locked away from the media but for the briefest, most simplistic lightweight interviews. She's been intensively prepped for several weeks by an expert team who's seen and done everything in politics. The debate format is oriented towards sounds bites, giving a minute and a half for anwsers and all of two minutes per discussion topic. That also lessens the chance that Biden will launch off into an amusing, long winded gaffe.

Both of them should at least appear, separately, on Meet the Press.

Gary   October 2nd, 2008 2227 GMT

What does Pallin mean when she says she represents is a "normal six pack Joe"? Who are these guys? Guys who sit around the TV with beer bellies watching football? Is she saying this is the type of guy we need in government? Or someone who thinks like such people? Given their obviously deep grasp of foreign affairs and domestic policy options.... I guess this is the "don't blink" just do it philosophy of governance? "Don't blinkl"... hmmmm... Doesn't she mean "Don't think"?

Sonny Spurr   October 2nd, 2008 2246 GMT

Look, this debate isn´t that important, really. The important issue is the presidential election coming up. Two things, first, has life for the averege american become better, easier under Bush and the oil people? Second, all coalition gouvernments has deep problems after adopting Bush´s WoMD policy and wants a change to get out of the embarassing predicament thay are in.

The world muslim community, EU, China, Korea – everybody needs a change to be able to rise from the current situation and take the necessary steps to get the world to better, safer and more optimistic place. N.B. i have´nt mensioned the US defience to adopt the scientests knowledge on global warming.

If you want America to be a safer place – elect a president who is ready to talk to the world leaders with a open mind. I don´t think that McCain with his back-pack or Palin with no experiance what so ever are the people to do that. Palin, lokk up, mayby Putin is flying over yor head right now!

Jim   October 2nd, 2008 2252 GMT

Palin is going to be judged on her depth of knowledge and body language. She is going to either flail about and freak out or simply survive. She is a liability to McCain now and no amount of nervous smiling is going to change that for the majority of the American public.

Kate   October 2nd, 2008 2259 GMT

Just a thought to Pat:

Harry Truman once said that the buck stopped at the top, and (as president) he was the top. If McCain wins the election, and something happens to him during his term in office, Sarah Palin then is "the buck at the top". Frankly, I find that thought nauseating.

There are many female Republicans that Senator McCain could have chosen as his running mate. Elizabeth Dole (senator from North Carolina) and Christie Todd Whitman (administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency) immediately come to mind.

But he chose instead to select a woman who appears to be insipid and clueless. I don't really care that she was a former beauty queen, that's surface only. I do care that the "1st runner up" is qualified. And to pick this person is an insult to all of the articulate, knowledgeable Republican women out there.

Alfred   October 2nd, 2008 2301 GMT

Tad   October 2nd, 2008 2322 GMT

Palin will have a few good one liners but will lack the same thing McCain does which is details. Obama has his plans online and has laid them out several times.

Palin passed windfall profit tax on oil companies in Alaska which McCain opposes. Palin made rape victums pay for their rape kits in a state that has the second highest percent of rape cases per population. Palin can't even name one court case she disagrees with besides Roe V. Wade.

Democrats only fear losing to such an idiot, again.

come on!!
she is going to be full throttle attack dog and will be just like at the convention.
look out Joe!

don't under estimate her.
let's just hope that Joe keeps it together so he won't be available for honest criticism so that she cannot claim a real victory.

You are an idiot. Typcial stupid american. People like you do not deserve to vote.

She (Palin) is an embarrasment to all americans. Lets hope she goes home soon.

european union   October 2nd, 2008 2341 GMT

McCain-Palin is the solid description of dumb ultraconservative american racist.... they`re dumb ( thinking that governance is some sort of a marketing strategy than opportunity make a change), the`re white ( let`s be realistic...how many black people nor latinos nor mixed did you see on their adverts?) and rich ( they dont care about the world... the only thing McCain thinks is his years in military service ( with due respect yes its a great honor but please we dont need another bush on the loose!!) with Sarah Palin, yeah you have a great potential for VP slot (and another proof that majority of american thinks and talk just like you..)

politics isnt about the chunkiest pick-up lines nor bad-mouthing slogans to catch attention..the real catch is to put more action on realistic problems and not plans.... if McCAin-Palin`s agenda will be placed in a huge picture...honey it`ll look like peter pan and webdy on the never never land. but in reality..life is not a fantasy... I just hope that the last 8 years of mistake wont we extended with another four years of mistake by choosing this too.

yes for Palin, she`s ahunter but politics is a junggle of strategy and you use your gray matter to think not your gun to aim.

for McCain. you are just lucky you dont have to worry about retirement benefits.

Hi Pat,

I'm from the Philippines and have been following the US elections from here.

It's too little too late for Palin. The gig is up. Even if she does okay in the VP debate we know that she has been coached and rehearsed and that whatever she says is something memorized. We already know that she obviously does not have what it takes to be a heartbeat away from the US presidency. She could not even name specific newspapers and magazines she had read! It's pathetic. McCain made a HUGE mistake choosing her as his running mate. It's going to cause him the presidency.

Marky   October 2nd, 2008 2349 GMT

Love this scenario of "if McCain has an accident". If McCain has an accident then someone with executive experience comes and fills in. She's got more executive experience than the lot of them.

Some pollies perform well in front of the cameras, some of them don't. Some pollies connect with people, some of them don't.
Some pollies get things done, some of them don't.

Getting things done, and connecting with people are important... performing well in front of the cameras is not.

Looking forward to a fiery debate.

Alissa Smith   October 2nd, 2008 2359 GMT

As an American living overseas, I tune in to CNN. But I'm disappointed. You at CNN are getting a lot of mileage off of Katie Couric's question about what Sarah Palin reads. What does she read? Please! That is such a juvenile, 5th grade question! To be honest, I think that's why Sarah Palin responded the way she did. It's not that she COULDN'T answer, it's clear that she DIDN'T WANT to answer. It's an insulting question that suggests she doesn't read and immediately would put anyone on the defensive. I think Katie Couric is the single-most laughable journalist on t.v. Is that one of her normal questions for every leader she interviews? She needs to re-think her approach. You don't go around asking people to name their reading lists. It is truly silly.

angee   October 3rd, 2008 006 GMT

she will wear her hair down and wear an earpiece being fed the answers!

dvskier   October 3rd, 2008 010 GMT

Palin should start by learning to pronounce a gerund, other wise know as present participle, ending in -ing with a hard "g" sound. To date she seems to think that the "g" is silent, hence pronouncing all such present participles as in'.

Leah   October 3rd, 2008 010 GMT

Thoughts from Australia,
Regular Joe Six-Pack? Didn't you just have 8 years of Joe? Look at the state of your country. The economy is supremely screwed, the war in Iraq has cost a trillion or more, investors all over the world are looking at the US with fear and doubt, your citizens cannot get sick without losing their homes, your public education system is one of the poorest in the developped world and your job loss rate is sky high. However, if all of that sounds good to you and you think that the same party can actually fix all of this with another Joe Six-pack in the Whitehouse then go ahead vote for McCain/Palin. If you want someone to have a beer with, go down to your local and find a mate! However, if you want someone to run the country then don't vote for another Joe Six-Pack!
Cheers,
Leah

Lawrence Larock   October 3rd, 2008 012 GMT

## Stop! ## Palin is just an ignorant politician, but I predict that she'll do well tonight having been rehearsing all week at McCain's ranch. Am I going to believe a single word of what she's about to say ?? Of course NOT !!! Too little too late Sarah. We know who you are today, no point pretending that you're someone else.
High patheticly speaking: Knowing that she could potentially be our next President makes me SICK !
Don't be fooled people.

Adrian   October 3rd, 2008 015 GMT

The USA needs a leader like Obama. America woudl regress if someone like McCain and Palin where to be successful. America has already regressed under the Bush administratio (all for the rich and opportnists). Please the answer is very very clear, give Obama and Biden a break to prove that America is a great country.

Leslie NJUME   October 3rd, 2008 017 GMT

Americans presidential elections have gone this wide and public, if not for any other reason, then for the fact that America is here and there, doing some good and dab things in many nations. The good things are those we have interest in and i believd they are why we, non Americans even bother to comment on whom our hopeful pair is. The policies of each team are clear.
Whcih offers a better plan?Which can resolve the world's crises that the USA as the promised land we knew can once more change?
I'm not talking about extorting oil and gas from other countries, not about bombing Iraq, Afgan, Pakis... the list is long.
I'm talking about a team that sees humans as those which the same God created, not as a function of colur nor race, nor location on the globe, but as people with one soul, mind and focus, ensuring the survival of not just a nation, but a people?
You figure that out and tell the world. McCainoPalin or Obama-Biden ticket?
Use ur conscience, not ur eyes.

Seriously folks, it's because a/Sarah Palin is a woman and b/Democrats are aghast that Republicans had the spine to put one of those on their ticket that she is being pilloried. She's no goose like Dan Quayle. The Dems had an unprecedented opportunity to select a woman for the Presidency and bitter factionalism resulted in a destructive Anyone But Clinton campaign. And they got Obama. Obama hasn't lead a choir, let alone Alaska. Sarah Palin is a gamebreaker and if McCain and the GOP give her a long leash, she will fry Obama and Biden. Just let the girl do her thing.

Uma in Liverpool, UK   October 3rd, 2008 028 GMT

As a lifelong feminist, I consider it sexist to NOT hold Palin to the same standards as Biden. They are applying for the same job, right?

We should keep in mind that knowledge that is crammed is good only for the short-term. Being able to understand the issues and making decisions accordingly - is another.

Cecile   October 3rd, 2008 032 GMT

Correction. We should keep in mind that knowledge that is crammed is good only for the short-term. Being able to understand the issues and making decisions accordingly – is another matter.

Rob   October 3rd, 2008 056 GMT

If these last few presidential elections have taught us anything, it's that we Americans are not the brightest lightbulbs in the stadium. We (not me personally) elected George W. Bush for president...TWICE!!! And not because of his performance with respect to Iraq or al-Qaeda, but because he supports banning same sex marriage and overturning Roe v. Wade. This apparently is all it takes for conservatives to vote for a politician.

In all honesty, politics is nothing more than one big never-ending chess match to see who can get elected/re-elected. Finding the best person for the job was never as important as electing someone who is willing to do and say whatever it takes to win votes. Demand the truth, but be willing to accept the truth in all its forms.

charlie regan   October 3rd, 2008 222 GMT

Just an outside observer from your northern neighbour...

- this moderator seems to be feeding some pretty clearly democratic slanted questions to Biden – and i'm a liberal in canada but don't appreciate press allowing such personal bias (appears so to me) to affect important proceedings such as this debate

- palin seems quite a bit more likable during this debate – but more than that is her ability to be so and yet come across as strong and straight at the same time

- i'm quite surprised at how palin has so adeptly walked on stage and directly into our home with my wife and i – very unassuming and genial

- like many worldwide i've got STRONG feelings about bush and his vp; so i'm amazed that this republican is so appealing

Don   October 3rd, 2008 226 GMT

Objectively viewed, Sarah Palin has an issue with answering a question. If she doesn't have an answer or isn't able to answer, she surfs an anti-government tangent hoping to stay afloat when supporting the policies of the current administration. Strangely oblivious to the irony of having "maverick change" on the front of the tee-shirt and "Bush 2009" on the back.
This debate has highlighted the huge knowledge gap between Biden and Palin. Palin comes across as hugely condescending and under resourced constantly refocusing on topics which she has some experience or prepared responses. Biden has performed according to expectation and leaves me convinced Obama has chosen a solid experienced rational running mate. Palin would leave me with little if any confidence if she was to ascend to the Presidency.

sylvia   October 3rd, 2008 258 GMT

A credit for Sarah Palin for being able to surpass the debate test. However , Sarah Palin puts so much word in her answer but of little substance.
On the other hand, I believe that Joe Biden have the knowledge, the experience, the passion for The US. He communicated well his party's plan based on knowledge , data and past experiences and he is sincerely open to change to regain the american dream and the respect of the international community. I believe that Joe Biden is a very nice and sincere person and very knowledgeable and will make a very good Vice President. He is very respectful ok woman as seen in the debate. We know well that he can easily pin Palin but did not do it.

Joe Biden definitely won the debate.

Joe Values   October 3rd, 2008 324 GMT

I think she delivered on meeting those low expectations on substance. I fail to see how lack of intellect and experience can be a winning combinaiton for her or the nation. If it were a beauty contest, old Joe is dead last, but thank god its not about beauty, its about substance, and who is really capable and qualified to make important decisions, without hours prep and scripts to work from.

A VP we need, intellectually challenged need not apply.

John Goddard   October 3rd, 2008 336 GMT

The influence and status of America and its people has slid so much under the influence of Bush and Cheeny. After watching the debate I am further convinced that an Obama win is critical for the world, or we will may all go back to the dark ages where fear and self preservation goven all actions. We need strong and confident leaders for stability and fairness for all.

Prepare yourself, if Barak Obama win all the world will se a new 11thh September again, this didint happen with Bush now because he is keeping the muslins occupated there, so this disturb them of conspiring so easy. And must to protected what they have also.
With the end of the war they will start again until to success very well
We from different countries, we see this from outsside, is a better view.
The bandidos from 11th september came inside the country in Bill Cinton government, when we was occupated about to hide is afairs, the atenthion of the world got distrated with this and everything happened.
So be prepared, many changes doens mean that will work, dont ignore that the man is muslin also, we can see USA falling in a ilusion with Barak Obam.

This whole "expectations game" is the most ridiculous thing I have ever heard. We are talking about the Vice Presidency and Presidency of the country. All that shoud matter is who is the most suitable candidate and not who did better than expectations. Even if Palin did better than expectations, it was Biden who clearly won the debate and is the more suitable candidate. Both should be judged with the same yard stick!

Ben   October 3rd, 2008 728 GMT

I have watched many US debates, read extensively of US politics
How? tell me is this person ready to lead your country , she has no
idea of almost every question asked, and she is going to be the next VP of the most powerful nation in the free world? Wake up America and smell the coffee!!

Anne Kamp   October 3rd, 2008 1005 GMT

Joe Biden is obviously the more informed Washington politician: He spoke knowledgeably about the issues. Sarah Palin is a well informed people politician: I am a middle class American and Sarah Palin spoke to me and I am confident will listen to me. Joe Biden is a talker; Sarah Palin is a doer! Give me Sarah Palin!

CLIFF EJIMS   October 3rd, 2008 1114 GMT

BIDEN is full of knowledge on foreign policy, i think OBAMA -BIDEN ticket is what AMERICA need at this moment.
Sarah Palin didn't sound convincing on foreingn issues, like the war in IRAQ and AFGANISTAN, she was a bit shaky in speech as if reading a script.
I think JOE BIDEN got it right.

America should be ashamed of themselves for setting the standerds so low just to make Palin appare to be smart. I just made her look more of an A** and I want to reach accross the Iles to give Biden a hug for keeping his cool and sticking to message amongst all that crap. I might have walked accross the stage and puched he one. How stupid. The grin and the smacking of mouth and smile and the winking it was a disgusting display of disrespect. And all this was used for was to once again take America with their short attention spans mind of the real issue. Nice in that sence. It was just a disstraction to keep at bay that McPalin had just conceded Mich. Loosers. Everyone hates a looser. and this attempt was a complete farst.

shelldi   October 4th, 2008 1957 GMT

Imagine the criticism if Hilary had said the rubish Palin has – there would be no slack for her, no pass becuase expectations were so low to start - nor should there be for anyone running for office. Palin may be just a regular American, but who cares? I'd prefer to elect my neighbor if what I want in the White House is a cutsie, regular, hock-thirsty mom. Instead, I want an acccomplished, intelligent professional for VP. How appaling for McCain to have come up with Palin as his best choice.
