John McCain was pretty casual about preparing for his debate with Barack Obama last week. He kept up a busy schedule; campaigning, travelling and even working with his colleagues in Washington on the Wall Street bailout. He still did pretty well against Obama. There was no indication he should have studied, slept or prepared any more than he had.

Sarah Palin campaigns in Ohio ahead of Thursday’s showdown.
Sarah Palin campaigns in Ohio ahead of Thursday’s showdown.

McCain's running mate, Sarah Palin, is taking a more traditional route – putting herself into 'debate camp' with some close advisors and practicing hard.

She spent four days in a Philadelphia hotel and now has gone into a more secluded setting as a guest at McCain's Arizona ranch.

Obama's running mate, Joe Biden, is preparing for the vice presidential debate in his home state of Delaware.

In keeping with a familiar campaign practice, Biden has a 'stand-in' debating in Palin's place. The stand-in is the governor of Michigan, Jennifer Granholm. Her job is to mimic Palin successfully enough to give Biden a chance to practice what to say and how to say it.

Biden has already told reporters what he expects.

"She's going to try to make it as personal as she can," he said earlier this month. "She's going to take a lot of straight lefts and jabs at me, she's going to try to get me to respond, she's going to try to get me to respond in a personal way."

"That's not my style. I'm not going to do it."

The McCain campaign isn't saying who, if anyone is playing Biden right now.

But Palin has done her best to both increase the pressure on Biden and poke fun at him at the same time. She told one crowd this week "I've been hearing about his Senate speeches since I was in, like, the second grade."

Funny that Palin would make such a joke about hearing Biden's speeches since she was in the second grade. Did she not get the memo about the age of the man at the top of her ticket? Don't worry Sarah, I'll go get that memo and get right back to ya!

Judy from CA   September 30th, 2008 1907 GMT

Why are the commentators on CNN trying to mislead people by insinuating that Gov Palin and Senator McCain are suggesting that Gotcha Journalism is on the part of the student that asked the question about Pakistan? The commentators can't be that stupid not to know that the Gotcha Journalism observation is pointed towards the media who is reporting the incident. Right Katie?

Christine   September 30th, 2008 1909 GMT

GO PALIN!!!! We need more people who are down to earth running this country. Get rid of the talkers with no action behind them.

"Lipstick on a Pig"

Jerry of Madison, WI   September 30th, 2008 2012 GMT

I just hope Biden takes this seriously, and doesn't under-estimate her. This is a perfect opportunity to deliver a death blow to McInsane's campaign. But don't under-estimate the Bush/Rove speech writers, or we'll all end up regretting it.

Anne in CT   September 30th, 2008 2013 GMT

I'm sure Joe Biden is sweating bullets.

Jim   September 30th, 2008 2054 GMT

The media has been unfairly critical of Sarah palin. This is an excellent opportunity for Sarah to show the Americanpeoples that Biden is just another boring Senator whose time has come and gone.

Kristi-WA   September 30th, 2008 2110 GMT

I hope she can back up her snotty comments. Biden is such a nice guy I think if she is flip, she will look even worse. Go for it Sarah, make some more old guy jabs at Biden. I bet McCain loves that.

RKB   September 30th, 2008 2112 GMT

Binden this is a golden opportunity to knock out republicans for good. You MUST make her look like unprepared fool that she is. I hope she weeps and runs out realizing how little knowledge she has.

Kim   September 30th, 2008 2140 GMT

People seriously need to stop crying for Sarah Palin. It's funny how many people think that she is being treated unfairly. She is running for vice president of the United States of America. If she cannot handle the heat of the media she doesn't belong in office. It's too early to start crying. How can she handle being vp if she can't handle criticism from the media. We'll see just how prepared she is on Thursday. One can only hope that, just like in her interviews, she screws things up for herself.

chris   September 30th, 2008 2330 GMT

Please..Palin can hardly string coherent sentences together. How is it unfair of the media to critize her...it is their job to ferret out the truth in what the candidates say. Its not their fault that the McCain camp lies more than the Obama camp!
I love how all the repubs are crying media bias, grow up and take the punches or dont run for office

Kailey   October 1st, 2008 010 GMT

The media has been unfairly critical of Palin? I personally believe that she deserves every bit of mockery she has received. Yea, the media is critical of every candidate, and more critical of the candidates that deserve it. Sarah Palin is a joke. If she wants to keep herself from being humiliated even more she should step down immediately. She has recieved every bit of mockery she deserves.

Meema   October 1st, 2008 843 GMT

I think Palin doesn't have the experience, while Biden has way more experience... I guess we'll just have to see on Thursday.

Rachel   October 1st, 2008 916 GMT

Here is a person with no national experience, and no foreign relations experience. McCain could have easily chosen a highly qualified running mate. But he did not. So why exactly was Palin selected? Let us think about that. I, for one, feel insulted as a woman and as a voter.

Igboma. G   October 1st, 2008 1153 GMT

I don't know why the reps are playing the sympathy game for sarah. How do they think she can get puplic to sympathize with her for incomprehensible and ignorance approach on issues very important to the America people. If they are not blaming Obama, then democrats,. Now it is the media. Next will be American. Who knows

Lene   October 1st, 2008 1159 GMT

If america still want the rest of the world to belive in USA then show us an reliable attitude, get rid of Palin, would you like to see this person as president? best regards
Lene (Denmark)

Michael, Denmark   October 1st, 2008 1259 GMT

You know, as an european looking to america to lead the world, you get kind of scared, when a country even considers to elect Sarah Palin.
If you want to be leaders of the free world, please vote for the candidates who a least know a little bit about the world.

You guys scare us, when Sarah Palin suddenly are a heartbeat away from leading your country. I don't care if she a woman or from alaska, but you got to be able to go forward and lead to solve the world's problems if you want to be pres of US.

And she is not.

Jason   October 1st, 2008 1310 GMT

"Debate camp"? That scares me. I'm now envisoning "nuclear holocaust camp" and "economics camp"... As she is running for Vice President, I'd think her approach should be a little more....mature? Adult?

connie   October 1st, 2008 1400 GMT

MY GODWHY DO WE HAVE TO SEND Palin to school. i think she should know most of this. i think Rep. should stop this show. We need some one that is not in the funny new & paper. she was in hot water in AK. She miss used her power that is dishonest. she should go to jail. If you don't know about it, go to Anchorage Daily News. she got her x- brother in- law fired. He was a long time & good trooper. do we want that to happen to you? her dishohest fits good in Washington. I DON'T kNOW WHY THE NEWS DON'T REPORT THIS. I THINK THEM LIKE HER AND DON'T WANT TO HURT HER FEELING.

John Self   October 1st, 2008 1434 GMT

Should Mccain and Palin win, Mccain will have more bodyguards than anyone in history – over 300 million in the US alone.

Henry neufville   October 1st, 2008 1435 GMT

What is expected to be achieved from the Vice Presidential debate in relation to their selections?

Pat   October 1st, 2008 1542 GMT

How can Democrats criticize Governor Palin on her experience when she has more leadership experience than Senator Obama? She lacks experience talking to the press. Unlike Obama who has the media dropping rose petals at his feet the media is digging for dirt any place they can with Governor Palin. The media has never been critical of Senator Obama when he has more dirt on him than any other candidate – he is racist, he has ties to anti-Semitic and anti-white groups, he is a socialist, he spits on the military then lies about how much he supports them, and is an idiot if he did not know the type of man his pastor and mentor was after 20 years.

Alex   October 1st, 2008 1634 GMT

If my memory serves me well, when Hillary was still running while Sarah Palin was not, Sarah says Hillary shoudn't complain about the media. Please Sarah, Screw up your debate for America and the world. We can't take the risk to have you as vp and McCain, who is more to blame since he picks you, as the president.

kerry   October 1st, 2008 1642 GMT

Sarah palin is so unqualified to be vp. her running mate is so far out of touch. he is not sure if he is a republican or a democrat. Last weeks antics of cancelling his campaign and then showing up on news programs should have got an emmy for that. Her interview with Katie Couric and Charlie Gibson were embarrassing to say the least. They speak of MEDIA BIAS oh please. CANT TAKE THE HEAT GET OUT OF THE KITCHEN....
this government has been on a decline since REGAN another out of touch linatic running amuck. what did he do he pretends to get shot, when his poll numbers went down
then there is the bailout is such a crock. if i get in financial trouble nobody comes to bail me out i sink . there is so much money roaming around washington. I am sure our founding fathers looked for their golden parachute when things got to be to much. please

ojong   October 1st, 2008 1823 GMT

palin's interview with katie knocked her off! It is up to her to reinvent herself during the debate. I don't blame her I blame McCain's ridiculously poor judgement. he is not fit to rule even a third world country like mine. ojong, cameroon

Morgan   October 1st, 2008 1859 GMT

What people seem to forget, is that Mrs. Palin is one step away from being Mrs. President. The VP has a lot of influence in office as well, so for people to overlook her lack of credentials, knowledge, and experience astounds me. Sure she might be down to earth and a nice person, but the fact she's on the ticket just demonstrates John McCain's poor judgement.

stephane prince   October 2nd, 2008 942 GMT

Looking from Europe, we can only be scared that Mrs Palin might even be considered for the job. In fact, she is a victim of the Republican campaign which desespetately needed dynamic and she has been deliberately used in this purpose. Do she really realise what pressure is on her ? How can someone being creationist, pretending that war with Iraq is a mission of God, pretending that war with Russia would not be a problem if required, how can me just imagine one second that Mrs Palin could become on day President of the most powerfull state in the world ? Makes me really scared !

Sharad Agarwal   October 2nd, 2008 946 GMT

Republicians always make comments about Obama talking the talk but is not walking the walk. Obama has put the spot light on George Bush formley named "Pinky" to the Private Sector "Horrah" for Obama the first Black President that has finNally opened the eyes to nation about the Pinky the Brain selling our Nation to the Private Sector.

Jules   October 2nd, 2008 1025 GMT

Katie Couric for VP.

Ken   October 2nd, 2008 1047 GMT

I had high hopes for GOP this election but really!!! What the heck were they thinking by picking Palin as VP!?!?!?! My mom is very much like Palin, they both warm and kind hearted and well intentioned! but hey the road to hell is also paved with good intentions! Would i want my mom to be a heartbeat away from president of the most powerful nation in the world and on whom our security will depend and the rest of the world's economies will depend!?!? NO WAY! I love them both dearly(Palin and my mom) but hey let's get real...this is no joke America... the GOP seem to be taking everyone for a ride yet again...just look how many opposed the inital bailout plan!!

kate buckingham   October 2nd, 2008 1201 GMT

If you were the boss, who would you hire???

OBAMA: Harvard law professor, Juris Doctor of law degree, constitutional law expert, Senate committees: foreign affairs, homeland security, veterans affairs, family, education, health.

BIDEN: Juris Doctor of law degree, Senate committees: Foreign affairs (chair), economy, health, crime, women's affairs, education, technology, environment

McBUSH: graduated from the naval academy in the bottom 5% of his class, senate committees: economy, environment, official conduct (arguably the 3 biggest Republican failures!!!!!!!!!)

PITBULL PALIN: went to 6 different universities before finally getting a BA degree in journalism, no domestic or foreign policy experience but can see Russia from her house.

SERIOUSLY, THIS IS A NO BRAINER!!!!

If you vote McBush/Pitbull, the fate of your country will be in jeopardy. Everyone here in Europe is laughing at Americans- America has become the butt of all jokes- people are asking, how can they seriously consider voting for McBush and his Pitbull for another 4 years of Bush's failed policies? Don't they ever learn???

Remember the frontpage headline of London's Daily Mirror newspaper back in 2004 when Americans re-elected Bush: HOW CAN 59 MILLION PEOPLE BE SO DUMB?

Gail   October 2nd, 2008 1406 GMT

Give me a break America. McCain Sucked! The only thing he could argue was Obama did not understand and from what I could see and hear and understand, Obama did understand and creamed McCain on a subject that he was supposed to have the most knowledge on. I've said it many times. What the hell does being a POW have to do with experience in matter of safty and war. McCain just prove to me one of the many whom are sitting and watching how very little he does understand about foreign Policies. I hope I spelt that right. In regards to Palin. She makes a rock same smart. Reading from script does not work in the real interviews. I bet MCCain's camp taught Katie Curic was a moron, but she sure made a fool out of Palin. She had asked Biden those same questions and he was able to answere them in his own words. She could't even remember the case Adams or the oil tanker in Alaska. What planet is she from again? remind me never go go there. I am starting to pity Palin. She should have done what is best for her family and her Baby and just stayed the hell out of this election. There is no place for the weak in this race.

Jules   October 2nd, 2008 1457 GMT

Maybe by some wild act of God Palin will win this debate.

Robert   October 2nd, 2008 1644 GMT

What I found completely disingenuous was her comment when Katie couric challenged her about taking a jab at bidens age given the age of her running mate. She responded by saying that it was not meant as a disparagement but rather as a compliment. Please. This was an outright lie. It was patently obvious to anyone what her meaning was. Don't insult our intelligence.

Arthur   October 2nd, 2008 1711 GMT

There were so many intelligent Republican candidates and yet Mcain picked someone for political expediency and a woman so that he could try to pick up hillary Clintons leftovers. Yeah she made him seem young.
Young and stupid.

Marvia   October 2nd, 2008 1720 GMT

When we were first introduced to Palin many American saw a tough woman with a family one that was very capable of being an effective vice president, mother and wife . So many were upset with all the sexist remarks that were made about her. Biden should just handle her like a person and forget about her being female. Why should she be handled with kids glove now?

carmen   October 2nd, 2008 1739 GMT

Why is Sarah Paline being treated with kit gloves, if she can't handle Joe Biden. then what about all other Joe Biden's in the world? Then I'd say Sarah Paline isn't ready for White House. Her interviews were bad. Just because she's a women, doesn't mean she should be treated any differently. I like Joe Biden he's tough, experienced. I want change, not next 4 years of same 8 years..

cyrus   October 2nd, 2008 1739 GMT

experience to run a govt is not there with the democrats. Change we can believe in for the worst. Sarah palin has two years experience. I think that is sufficient. But obama and biden all talk no work.

Ron Brooks   October 2nd, 2008 1846 GMT

Sarah Palin for VP?. Come on America, the VP choice should be as qualified for president as the front runner. Palin is not qualified to run the state of Alaska let alone the country. We are making our country look so foolish even considering this candidate. In these difficult times for our country the least we can do is pick the more qualified leaders to fix the mess our current President started. Choosing the wrong leader can only lead further to our demise. Forget about your party loyalty and vote for improvement in our country.

john oblong   October 2nd, 2008 1849 GMT

Its a job interview...right. If they want to work for us they had better be able to consistently produce a quality product, on time, and on or under budget. We have seen the resumes, some factual irregularities were noted but, hey, everyone pads the resume. The job the candidates are applying for is important, they say they want to lead us, the questions are where, why, when, how, and how much? Do your job and ask specific topical questions and demand factual question specific answers, no more rambling off topic....unless its painful, and embarrassing then let them ramble, thats entertainment. And finally if you have an opportunity let them know that no matter who gets the job, if their performance appraisals are like the last guys, their four year contract with us will not be extended.

jan   October 2nd, 2008 2000 GMT

GO GET HER SEN BIDEN----------ALL FAIR IN POLITICS

LTP   October 3rd, 2008 029 GMT

GO PALIN!!!! Your smile worth multi-million votes already . We need more people who lives in small town like you to run this country. Get rid of those talkers with no action behind them.

Andrea Jones   October 3rd, 2008 310 GMT

The debate was dangerous because it did not seem to be a total disaster for Sarah Palin. If people who like her rush to take that as proof that she is competent, they do themselves a disservice. Sarah Palin is still the same person we saw interviewed by Katie Couric. She seriously lacks the knowledge to be an important player in U.S. politics. She was better able to evade questions during the debate and had memorized a few points which she was able to parrot.

However, it is dangerous if, because she seemed less aggressive, strident, small-minded, that this serves as proof that she can be the next president of the U.S.. Given McCain's age and health problems, Palin is much likelier to become president than any previous vice president. It would be utterly rash for the American people to risk having her suddenly in the position of running the country.

Also, as vice president she would not be able to assist McCain, since she simply lacks the expertise to do so. Now is not the time to begin to start studying such matters as national defence, world affairs, the economy and many other subjects. This needed to happen ten years ago, at least.

It's too bad if this race becomes a popularity contest and if people think that the presidency is just like buying toothpaste. Sure, I'd try a toothpaste if Palin advertised it. But there is so much at stake here! This is not a toothpaste decision.

Muhammad Iqbal   October 6th, 2008 638 GMT

Mr. Biden was instrumental in getting the 15 billion dollar loan package for Pakistan will somebody from your end please ask Mr. Biden, that as we have a very controversial President now, how can he guarantee that this amount will be used for the benefit of the people of Pakistan and what checks will be there. For the last sixty years our country has received billions from U.S. and other countries, where is that money Mr. Biden?
