ATLANTA, Georgia - It was the final act of a U.S. political drama that played out over two weeks and was broadcast to the masses – across the United States and around the world.

McCains message is heard in New Yorks Times Square.

Taxis drive by during John McCain's speech.

The U.S. political conventions were drawing to a close and this was the last scheduled performance.

So, while some watched the goings-on at the Republican National Convention from the comfort of their living room or maybe even a bar, others had front row seats – on a simple stretch of sidewalk in the Big Apple.

CNN was back in New York's Time Square Thursday night, broadcasting live coverage of Republican presidential candidate John McCain,s acceptance speech.

And like last week's viewing party for Barack Obama, it once again proved to be a performance that stopped traffic and drew a big crowd.

Crowds listen to McCains message in Times Square.

Crowds listen to McCain's message in Times Square.

McCain's speech was not the final curtain call for the 2008 U.S. presidential election. In some ways, it was only the opening act.

Now both candidates – McCain and Obama – must take their shows on the road, in a final push to win support from American voters.

It always amazes me that when given the choice of a reformer or a politician who promises to advance a voter's pet interest, voters will come down most of the time on the side of the campaign promises. There is a difference between "change" (which can be for the worse) and reform. If enough voters wake up and realize that, we may see a reversal of wasteful government spending and a return of common sense.
One of the promises Obama has made is to lift the restrictions that prevented unions from engaging in criminal activity. What kind of change is that?

I feel osrry for Cameron Brown – she is so miserable and jealous of Gov. Palin she has become witchy and evil

MARTIN   September 6th, 2008 326 GMT

Please tell Sarah Palin:

Jesus was a community organizer and Pontius Pilate was a governor. She needs to understand the difference.

bill   September 6th, 2008 444 GMT

why is palin getting good treatment. the R wants the media to leave her alone, that it is sexcism and they should not ask her any question. Mrs. Clinton was in the race a she got everything, so did obama for race, so did mccain for his age, and everybody else that was running. that shows weakness on her and the R.

What wonders me about mr.McCain,is that goes to war,,is take prisorer of war,is being tortured ,and don't ask me how,but survived?then he retures home and starts working for the people caused his pain in the first place,as if to say "gimme some more of the same".Oke, imagine him being dropped in the jungle of "nam",with some bodies of him with just one order, can't be more simple "shoot on anything that moves and not moves". He survives!,You know what that means ? He survived the most feared enemy of all:"friendly fire".Amazing .When he for instance was dropped with together 20 bodies and their opponent 20 vietcong ,they needed ,to take the enemy out, approx .20 x 55.000 bullets to hit them all(this is statisticly).Although they have learned to shoot, panic that goes along with entering the enemy zone make sure you shoot all the bullets, except when you hit ,by accident of course ,one of your bodies.Or yourself get hit,The chance to get hit by one of the 20x 55,000 bullets is not small. When you per accident should have killed your 19 bodies with one blow, then you've left 54981 bullets. To less to kill one enemy.(statisticly to kill one vietcong you need 55.000 bullets) so you stop shooting .Abusively the enemy thinks that you surrender and you are taken prisoner .Interrogation, torture, interrogation, torture ,you start speaking, they kill you.Next! And Privat McCain,a die hard patriot survives,so all those years he keeps his mouth shut! returned home he joins the republican party. enjoys a political career .And now:"make me your commander in chief,i'm experienced ,me myself was a prisoner of war being tortured,i just loved it ,i can recommend it ,please gimme me more of the same"? By the way, what about the forgotten war's,forgotten Army ,the Dutch Army?

The documentary Prison Nation stays heavy on my mind and I truly wonder if both candidtates really see the need to restructure the American system and create ways for lower income people to succeed and advance? How are jobs going to be created? How will the education system be improved? How are the mentally ill people being treated? Are you looking at todays youth and offering programs on all levels to uplift them and our natiion? Do you understand why we as a nation have so many peoplein prison? DO YOU REALLY?

I'm telling you, we're gonna have a party when it's all set and done. A big party!!! LOL!!!

I strongly recommend that your reporters, pundits, and research staff, such as it is, regularly tune in to the Daily Show and the Colbert Report to apprise yourselves of just how ridiculous the political circus and its "coverage" has been.

Mysterion   September 6th, 2008 1944 GMT

I,d like to react on the comment of Gail Ellis Duncan.Exactly my issue:to lower the costs of manufactering ,you bring the prodution work to a prison,so in spite of (or maybe even thanks to:) high unemploydeds-rates,an undertaker still can compete with China because of the wages you get in prison. At the same time ,to assure longterm effects, you change criminal laws so that you can arrest enough people ,for a longtime, for little crime, to do the cheap labour. And who would dare to bring this up,risks also to be punished.

In the U.S. a prison is mostly an family business And the people of the village near the prison ,have all a contract with the Prison.Of course to run a Prison is not a crime,But when you consider that 1 in 100 adults of the U.S citizens is imprisoned,it does show a big hole in democracy. As proven by the Bush-administration,you can get to power to play mean and dirty,by manipulate the numbers of votes, and to pay your way in.In the beginning you wouldn,t notice ,and the ones who got to power ,didn't do this, euphemisticly,to benefit the American People,in the contrary, they give a damn about the American people. The only aim they had was to serve their own needs. When they really would do that fot the common good, they had no need to play dirty. And just imagine that all that Bush wanted would have succeeded. Then the possibility to make a different political choise would have taken away from you .And the "New Roman Empire",the New Bush world order would be a fact.affortunately you awake just in time. However, the Bush administration is a real tough-one and it doesn t give up easily, still they try as long as they can to stay and unfold their evil sceme, and eventually get away with it.And look at the damage indeed, not only done to the U.S but also in the whole world.Until 8 years ago all nations in the world were slowly getting along wit each other. In one Blow it was gone. The World needs at least 50 years to recover from it, where still ,because of the example of big brother, governments are runned by corrupt politicians,.And to pay the depths of the war, the future of America , for a century at least is paying this depth! And thats only one side ,because the change of mr.Obama means also change in psychiatry, where people that have no job are made crazy and hooked to medicins for life .and medicins means change in pharmaceutical industry ,which automatically will ask for change in Health insurance..Don't underestimate the effect on Economy. It looks like that further nothing happend, but companies and industries are thank to 9-11 now in the hands of other people than before 9-11 .See the link :1)Oil and energy,2)Transport,3)Pharmacy ,4)weapon industry, and Chemical Industry.Eventually a change in law is needed to protect democray against criminals, even when they are a Billionair. You must agree that it could't be so that being a Billionaire puts you above the law,and you can kill ,destroy ,continuously telling lies to the American people,i.o w.nationscam!,and still get away with it?When this is not enough for impeachment ,then what is!That's what you at least owes Bill ,in the name of Rightiousness .

I am disgusted with the way CNN is portraying the Republican party. It is obvious that CNN backs the Democrats. Campbell's "interviews" are only an excuse for her to give her own opinion while preventing her republican guests from even having the opportunity to answer her questions fully by talking over their voices so they can't be heard. Why doesn't she just stand in front of the camera by herself and give her own view and save her guests the embarassment of being cut off whenever they try to speak or answer her questions?

Whatever happened to fair and responsible journalism? Hitler used the media for his own gain and CNN is also attempting to sway the American vote by pushing its own slanted view which is always against the Republicans. It is so obvious that it has become ridiculous. I won't be watching CNN for the duration for this reason.

The dialogue is going to have to change from "who's running for office now?" to "how can we stop all of the political races from costing umpteen million dollars so that real people can run for office?" With the state our nation is in today, it should be apparent to the us that the elites are not going to do anything about the issues facing the average American because they are not affected by the issues facing the average American. We pay for their gas, their haircuts, their secretaries, their cars, their pensions, their health insurance, their houses, their offices, their food, their raises, their vacations – why should they be concerned about changing anything? And if we don't like our particular representative, we always have the "choice" of voting in another elitist who won't do anything either. . The only question left that is worthwhile is – How are we going to get average Americans into office? No more Democrats. No more Republicans. We need a new party – The AverageAmericrats.

I give McCain and the RNC convention points for getting the publics attention over the past week... but seriously, many of those comments were just plain mean.

There's a difference between getting the nation's attention by putting on a good show, by running a strong platform, and by shooting your mouth off. While I appreciated the countless references to McCain's war-hero biography (and it is a strong point in his favor), I must give the Democrats the prize for showmanship and policies... but do the Republicans really want to win on #3???

P.S. – Dear Sarah, don't make fun of community organizers anymore... that really sucked.

Mr McCain
It is really unfortunately that you were captured and ended up as a POW for several years however that is a chance you took when you enlisted. It was your decision not the American people....so stop trying to ram it down our throws. Just for the record my grandmother had (6) sons in the II World War at the same time and although they all came home their lives were not the same after experiencing what they did. Oh and I forgot the best part while they served their country they experienced racial descrimination and bias because they were African Americans. One uncle took the officers exam for the navy, received a grade that qualified him for officer status however had to settle for the army because their were no black officers at that time....yet he served. Was his experience not devestating for a young man who loved his country? Mr McCain you came home to healing and business as usual. My uncles came home to limited job opportunity and low pay....not to mention discrimination.

Sarah Palin
I am old enough to be your mother and had my daughter given a speech like the one you gave at the convention I would have been embarrassed and felt like I failed as a parent. You were just rude and aggressive and "wrong".

Secondly, no one waits five months to decide to get married if they are pregnant....who are you trying to kid. Also, why would a mother who has a great relation with her children let her son go off to war before completing his education. What is so wonderful about that? Most mothers would be pulling rank.

Sarah, you don't have a clue!!!! You need to go back to school for manners, family and edu 101 before you qualify for the vice presidency of this country. By the way add community organization to your list.

Both you and Mr McCain need to tell the American people what specifically you are planning to change....how you are going to make things better and improve the conditions in this country. If you haven't noticed things are pretty dismal.

William B   September 9th, 2008 1815 GMT

How in the name of God do the CNN and AP polls change in 24 hrs from Obama leading McCain by 12 points to McCain in the lead by 1 point? It sounds to me like the media is spinning this whole thing. Give us a break all you spinners, please be fair.

Jim LaH   September 9th, 2008 2032 GMT

....I was flipping thru the channels and came across the Ellen Show.......today she had Michelle Obama on. Ellen brought up the fact that she was proud of her husband(Barack?) about the children of candidates being off limits.....mmmmm....but fair game for the wife of the candidate to talk about it. Knowing that a host will pre-screen questions and ideas with their guest...they knew they could stay within the "letter" of the law by saying that the candidate was not talking about it......pretty two faced....!!!! And if the McCain camp nows brings it up they will be looked at as useing the Palin's family matter to their advantage. And the Obama camp can say that the candidate didn't say any thing. Politics is the devils work......everyone looks for their pound of flesh...!!! Maybe a flood of 40 days should en gulf Washington DC...because neither side really looks out for the people of this country.......being that I'm not perfect I say..., "let he who is without sin...........

McCain's strait talk express has turned into a garbage truck. The American people are starting to smell the stinch.
