ST. PAUL, Minnesota – John McCain has never made a secret of the fact that he loves to gamble. Tonight all his chips are on the table in the hands of a new and relatively inexperienced player.

Alaska governor Sarah Palin speaks tonight at the Republican National Convention, after a build-up that couldn't have been bigger. And no one really knows if her previous experience has prepared her for the game.

The indications are good. Palin has already given McCain more 'play' in the press and more buzz in his party than anyone could have imagined. A lot of Americans are accustomed, even tired, of the media fascination (and Democratic love affair) with Barack Obama. McCain couldn't find a way to compete, but now maybe he has.

Palin probably doesn't have to do particularly well tonight. Many Republicans will love her, no matter what kind of impression she makes. Hard-core Democrats probably have such a low opinion of her that she can easily exceed their expectations. And they weren't going to vote  Republican anyway.

Her biggest task is to generate more excitement for the campaign, address the questions about her experience and record, and give Americans reason to consider her for the vice-presidency. If they like her, they may get used to the idea.

Mann!! That Palin speech sure must've made hardcore Dems have a change of opinion. She should be called Sarah Impalin' because she sure impaled the dem candidates.
Pretty good to see the pitbull in her.
Interesting to see how her statements get twisted around, because some people are fantastic at missing the point.
I immediately saw a so called 'analyst' completely miss the point ,and give his skew interpretation , saying that she 'mocked community organisers'...Then again I had to check twice to see if the 'analyst' was a democrat before I decided he perhaps had one shooter too many.
If thats the way the chips are on the table, then perhaps someone has a winning hand!

Sarah Palins daughter is pregnant and republicans say this makes Palin more human. Why did this same mind set not apply to Bill Clinton and the Lewinsky problem? I guess the definition of being a Republican is one who believes and practices the double standard. If those who formed the first Republican party could talk to us now they'd be ashamed at what its become.

I would like to ask Gov. Palin why, if she believes she is so ready to lead, did she not run for President of the United States herself?

Ramsi Hashash   September 4th, 2008 532 GMT

The Mc Cain-Palin ticket is good one for the whole election. I also believe that she is good for 75% of the Republican party. She is what Mc Cain needed. However due to the fact that she came from nowhere, gives it a bitter seat taste. Most Hillary supporters will think she was chosen to try to bring in some more Hillary supporters, but I think this did not work out the way they hoped.
As we know now the republican convention still keeps us in the dark of how they want to approach the countries internal challenges, economy, healthcare, crime, illegal immigration etc.
There was no need for Palin to go after Obama since she is at most on the same level of experience, so it does not look good if a new dog is used as a pit bull. She good have made herself more fans by addressing issues. As we all know she did not.
This again might show that she was told what to say, since her speech writers where not her own. So one wonders how much does she have to say or better how much is she allowed to say.

One thing which bothers me most is that if I compare other tickets of the past, the President & VP always knew each other from before in some cases they had a long history together like Bush & Cheney. The fact that Mc Cain does not know anything about his partner worries me. CV and answers from a questionnaire are definitely not enough to know if the chemistry is right, if they think a like when having to make statements on the spot etc.

In any case Obama-Biden ticket will be ahead 8 to 10 percentage poinst on teh 4th of November. That is at least my take on the election and after the VPs have been chosen.

How about the issues, the economy, the things we need to get fixed after this catastrophic administration? They come across as angry and vindictive, are these your good Christian values Gov. Palin? You focus too much on the negative, shows very little class next to Obama/Biden. I hope for the sake of this Country you lose.

E Z   September 4th, 2008 607 GMT

Nevi, she can attack, I agree, but she is too hateful, is that what we need now, 4 more years of divisivness? Aren't 8 enough? Dems are really happy, she is not even touching the issues because they know she is a loony, and ask yourself this, why is it that they are restricting her access to the press? Already we know McBush has a temperament problem, these two better not get anywhere near the WH for our own good.

What draws my attention in this whole election,no matter if you are a democrat or a republican ,is that the American people have the choise between let's say Economic recooperation or "strong "military leadership .This is simular to the choise that they had in 1939 when the German people had the choise between butter or guns in the the historic outlet "Wollt ihr Butter oder Kanone"whereby the people where so lyrical by the speech of the Fuehrer ,that they didn't notice that the choise they made "Kanone"was literally put in their mouths.

Simple and effective manipulation. What marks the republican campaign is the call for "strong leadership" in the commander in chief i.o.w" Der Fuehrer".Der Fuehrer was in reality also an unexperienced politician but nevertheless got to the top of the N.S.D.A.P,Der National-Socialistisch Deutsche Arbeiter Partei,in english :the National-Socialistic German Labour Party ,in a few years time ,and became "Der Fuehrer"in just 5 years time. Not because he was such a terrific replacement for the German Emperor,But because he was very eloquent and behind him was a secret esotheric Brotherhood called" Die Thuele gesellshaft" (The Thuele Society) which was lead by Meister Therion(Master Therion).Nicknamed "the black"

.Their history goes back to the year 1626, The year of the death of Sir Francis Bacon, alias Baron verulam, who was a legitimate son of the english Queen Elizabeth and the Earl of Leicester and a big shot Rosecrucian. His death was a fake death. In reality he fled to Germany under a fake identity, where he iniated this secret society that believe that America, that was just discovered by Columbus (1592),was to become the new Atlantis. The word Thuele is the ancient word for Atlantis.

Only few people Know that it was sponsored by very ,very rich Industrials with among them also Jewish families(believe it or not).During WWII the Thuele brotherhood immigrated to the U.S. to the state of Texas.Sir Francis Bacon now, was an alias of a very famous person namely W.shakspere, who had a special knowledge about parliamentery law and the Etiqette of the Royal Court which he revealed in his plays. The germans had not only chosen for guns (=war) but also for their defeat, because the real goal was to make the U.S. the mythic winner (because is was also Canada, Poland, New Sealand and Great britain ,todays United kingdom, that was mostly responseble for the defeat of Germany. What does that have to do with today?I reckon it's obvious the goal be hind the republican party is to achieve "Atlantean "worlddomination " by military force with the cost of many ,many lives.Or would you rather think that is all coincedence?then look on the dollarbills that contains many symbols used by rosecrucians and free masonery as well.(think twice)

As an outsider in the West, but affected by the terrorism spread mainly due to war in Iraq ( before it was localised and uncoordinated if any), I would like to say to the West including America. All of us need leaders who are able to see come out of their ideologies and work to improve the economies of their countries. They should give the military adventures a rest for at least a decade. That means pulling out troops from Iraq, concentrating on Afghanistan alone for a period. The credit crunch is killing off many families. The healthcare has become a big issue. These and others need attention. We should elect leaders who give holidays to foreign policies and concentrate on Domestic problems. Otherwise, prepare for China, the next world leader.

Sometimes I can't believe what we Americans will actually accept.
Its such a puzzle to me. The only thing I can imagine is the fact that
our system of education has been so inadequate this last generation.
I am looking at the Republican party and I see people who have little
or no credentials for governance. McCain is a military man with
little understanding of law or economics. Palin has a background
in journalism? How are these people going to be able to understand
and debate the nuance of law or understand the complexity of the world
market? The word conservative is starting to mean something else
if the Republican party is conservative. Conservative is starting to mean
limited intellectually. Wouldn't it be a comfort to have a man with a Harvard education under his belt. How refreshing to have someone
who actually has a law degree and some a real public service record
with military service. Obama is a gift from the hard work of integration
please lets not miss this chance.

Esther   September 4th, 2008 1035 GMT

So now the Republican party wants to run the country with a Granpa and his grandaughter.. and great grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren! ...

Wow! how impressive. This sounds like one of those third world countries where dynisties and for ever! Please, give me a breack

OBAMA for a Change.

Thanks

I don't think that her experience as mayor of Wasilla, Alaska is all that impressive. Wasilla's population is estimated at 6,000 or triple the size of many a suburban high school.

Does anyone really listen to what is being said in these speeches-and what is not said. What I heard last night, was a speech of barbs, lies and sarcasm directed at the democrats. I heard nothing about the important issues that affect the average family.
What about health care, food costs, environment AND reality about what is going on in the middle east. Oh, I forgot ,the republicans told us she does have the foregn experience needed as she lives near Russia.
Sure, Gov. Palin is a great speech maker and a tough woman juggling children and a career. However, before we women get too cosy, remember she also has beliefs that will put American women back years if implemented.
Also, does anyone care about her record while serving in Alaska? It certainly isn't stellar.

I find it interesting that Gov. Palin herself made comments against women in politics whining about unfair treatment. This morning I heard one of McCain's top advisers saying no family has ever undergone treatment as bad as Palin's family endured this week. I guess they are referring to the spot light on Palin's performance as a politician in Alaska. Further, they question why journalist s have the right to ask her policy questions. Does this mean any debate will have preapproved questions by McCain's advisers?

I really would like to see Sen. Clinton and Gov. Palin debate-especially; as the GOP claims Palin has more political experience.

Am I nervous about Palin answering the phone at 3:00 am?
You bet I am.

I will say this lady started on a wrong note. She should go back and read and watch all that happened to Barack from the begining of this campaign. Then she will understand what Barack has gone thru the get to where he is. He was not chosen by one person at the last minute. He was chosen by over 20million Americans living in America and abroad. He has passed thru "fire " for the past 19 months. And yet he does not attack as Palin is doing. She will understand what it means to be a VP in the next few days. Her whole records will be under the microscope in few days by the media. She should be prepared. WELCOME ABOARD-PALIN.

martin - independant   September 5th, 2008 135 GMT

What does it tell you of McCain, when while still being married, he courts another women?
Family values out the window! So un-republican!

Shella   September 5th, 2008 428 GMT

WOW! that speech tonight was embarrassing, I felt a little sorry for the man since he only got a real applause when he mentioned his VP. Look the speech was okay but when it came down to what he was going to do, it just sounded like Bush's economics which are the same policies that got us into to trouble in the first place. But I have to say behind the scenes I think this is the picture, let me just set it up; Palin and Mccain backstage:

Palin say's look you old bastard, you better not mess this one up for me! can't you see how my people just love me and I got to take over your position as President when you croak you old fart! SLAP!!!! Palin just slap the old guy in the face. You know you only have a couple of extra months to live, so we better get this right!!! LOL, just my husband's imagination running wild, but a true possibility and a scary prospect for all of us! This woman isn't ready!

This is the party of change? I don't think so, they just took sound bites from the Obama's camp and tried to make it their own. This whole week has been a waste of my time. I am exhausted with all of the corruption, lies, deceptions, hate for the rest of America and one sidedness of the RNC, completely drained for giving them the benefit of the doubt, now only to see who they really are, Elites! I don't think Mccain did a good job seperating himself from his party but embraced his party with the steel embrace he always has had. I was most disgusted by the playing of 911 and the playing up the fear in the American people for our votes. It was insulting and it made me think automatically of Bush and how he has failed us all, by not handling the war better. I am a mother of 4 hard working and I don't care for Palin simply because why she was picked, not for her real credentials. Mccain thinks that Hilary supporters are lame ducks and stupid and that we'll fall for anything. Wasn't it Mccain who said all a vp is good for is checking in on the presidents health and attending funerals when he couldn't? Yes I believe he did say that! Palin said she would be a supporter to all the mother's and the disabled children, when in her state she cut funding 62% for the care of the disabled. The Hypocrisy of this party is apparent and they will not get my vote!

Thanks

Shella   September 5th, 2008 434 GMT

Don't get me wrong I am a mother of 4 and a career woman who can relate to Palin and Michelle Obama because they are mothers as I can relate to any woman who is a mother and loves their children. I felt that she was very proud of her family but she fell short on her message to the American people because she didn't speak to the real issues and concerns that I feel as an American needed to be answered. For example; health care, economics, and the hardships that I am having right now in my everyday life. To me she is making this more of a cultural war than anything else. As far as I am concerned she is more of the same and a woman version of Mccain there are no real differences and I don’t agree with her stance on the issues at all. Yeah her speech was okay, but very, very sarcastic and smug at times, and the experience stuff should come on off the table since she doesn't have that much experience herself and that's just the truth about it. So what she was mayor of a small town and now governor or Alaska, what does this tell me? NOTHING! Her message fell by the waste side and came up way to short for me. I want real answers to what this GOP party plans to do to help me and my family out, not give me a hand out but fix the problems they made for us! Obama laid out what he plans to do to help us, now it's time for the Mccain's camps to do the same, it’s your turn!!!!

John in Chile   September 6th, 2008 353 GMT

If we thought George W Bush was a stubborn go-it-aloner who thumbed his nose at the rest of the world and alienated the USA from the rest of civilization, then it looks like it is about to get a lot worse.... If Palin ever (God Forbid) came into the presidency, I fear we would look back on the Bush administration with longing for the tender times of the Iraq war. This woman looks like big trouble. DEFINITELY not diplomatic material. We can't afford this risk either domestically or internationally. She reminds me of Khaddafi. Just too strange a personality type to be at this level of public office. How could she ever represent the American people before the world.
And all that gun toting stuff. It's just too ridiculous.
