ATLANTA, Georgia – I'm on may way to St-Paul, coming from Denver (in the western U.S.), via CNN headquarters in Atlanta (the southern U.S.) to the state of Minnesota (in the northern U.S.). My carbon footprint got bigger and dirtier this week, I'm afraid.

Sarah Palin is the wildcard in the U.S. election race.
Sarah Palin is the wildcard in the U.S. election race.

From the vantage point of just a few weeks ago, we at CNN weren't sure how the Republican National Convention would compare to the excitement of the Democratic Party gathering.

Now, for reasons good and bad, I think it will be a lot more interesting. The good reason is that there is a very new face on the GOP ticket: Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. As they say up in Anchorage - "America's coldest state, hottest governor." That's 'hot' in the sense of impressive and on the way up.

She may be the most popular unknown in American politics. But her days as an unknown are obviously over.

The other factor, the "bad" reason that so many people will be watching the Republicans closely, is of course Hurricane Gustav. John McCain is already changing his plans to visit the southern coast of the U.S. before Gustav gets there... How much will he have to change his convention?

A very interesting week ahead.

This is certainly not meant to be disrespectful to those who lay in the way of Gustav, but why does one have to change any plans for the GOP convention. A has nothing to do with B.

So let us go one with the convention and have our hearts and minds focused on the people who are or will be hit by Gustav, but the convention should go on.

What difference does it make if Bush and Cheney do not attend the convention to the people who are in Gustav's way, none whatsoever.

Mc Cain to go down to New Orleans is more a burden or the local authorities. People do not need someone to come down there and assure them that they will be taken care off. They need to know that they will be taken care off after Gustav has passed.

Mr. Mc Cain, you better stay in Minnesota, get through your convention and then be able and willing to help. Otherwise this whole thing will look like a pure PR stunt and surely will not go down well with all the people who will get hit by Gustav.

To all other politicians, be careful to try to take advantage of Gustav in one way or the other, this is no time for politics; this is the time to help.

It's funny that John McCain flip-flops so much, not only does he change his message at a whim... with his new logo "country first", he'll use anything that sounds patriotic, American loyal, or anything that is related to his POW history... it's quite obvious. And then he flip-flops on his criticism to suggest Barack Obama doesn't have the experience and readiness for president, yet selects a woman VP who is light-years away from being ready for president, and a pick which really makes you wonder how much John McCain cares about his country or his political ambition in order to apease Hilary Clinton women voters.
The funny part is... that the media is letting him get away with this wrecklessness in order to protect his so-called cowboy antics as a "reformer" and "maverick". Yes, he served the congress and senate for over 20 years, but what can he really lay claim to in changing or reforming during all those years ?

I don't think the average person could bring up anything about John McCain's so-called "reforming" or "maverick" initiatives.

Barack Obama was battered by the media and of course the republican party for not wearing a stupid little American flag button !!!! Come-on media, be fair ! John McCain is making all kinds of minor and major blunders... "jump on his ass" !!!

This is ALREADY a PR stunt. McCain is NOT the President and has literally no other reason than PR to cancel events or his appearance at the convention. Yes, he should certainly talk about it. In fact, the party SHOULD be using the convention to show how a McCain presidency could better rally the public sectors to assist in such catastrophes than the current administration. It is an enormous opportunity to help that is being squandered. Of course, the problem comes when you had planned to have that same current administration attend your convention. Now, how to distance yourself from that, yet show your humanity and leadership? A sticky wicket. So sticky you cancel the convention. Seems like they are opting to do nothing of any real import and prep for a photo op of McCain on a military rescue vessel. Wait for it.

I have seen on ABC that Palin was a member of the Alaskin Independent Party, is this true? They were advocating the secession of Alaska from the Union as late as 1996. Do you have any information on this?

It is great that everyone wishes to be American these days, but let's look at what did happen under a republican administration.

First we had Katrina, did the Bush Administration care then? How much of the response to Gustav can be contributed to the fact that everyone knows the world is watching.

What has happend in last three years in regard to the rebuilding of New Orleans and other gulf coast communities, and what would have happened if the storm was a category 3 or better?

Well, there has been for too little concern by the Bush administration as to the rebuilding of the gulf coast and the dislplacement of citizens. If the strom would have been worst–the situation on the ground would have been far worst.

The fact is, that the problems of New Orleans have not be solved, and most likely will notbe solved with republicans in the White House. They simply do not care to invest in the common peoples of our land.

How does a country care for its citizens and the state of the infrastructure without tax dollars? Who among us can afford to pay higher taxes for the sake of the United States of America.

Robert you are an intelligent man and I had to second your comment since it has the complete ring of truth!!! Bush didn't care and he still doesn't care about the American people. Did you hear him today when he briefed the American people about what the current situation was on Gustav and in the same breath talked about energy and how the politicians need to come back and pass something on energy bill and it's concerns. He didn't apologize or reassure these people who actually live on the Alantic coast about how their homes were and the amount of damage they would have to face when they returned or how they would get the support they needed when they got back to rebuild if necessary. This man has been busy in his office behind closed doors in secret sigining documents to keep us in perpetual wars for years to come, he does not care for us, but all he cares about is lining his and his friends pockets with cash money. He truly is an evil man!!!!!

But it might be necessary when our real president comes to office so we can fix things and get America back on track as it should be.

And Mccain is in the same boat with Bush. He also loves war and his plans are to keep us fighting, they both are evil men!!!!

Palin, a "soccer Mom" from Alaska!!! Who doesn't believe in Sex Education in schools. Perhaps if it was taught her daughter and so many other teen age girls in Alaska would not be pregnant! I suppose she doesn't believe in Drug Education in schools either!
Can you imagine if McClain was to win (considering his age and health) should died and she has to runn this this Country? She is in an important session, the Nanny calls the kids are sick /in trouble and she has to but world affairs on hold to see about kids. But then to who would raise her children? I believe children need their mothers not Nanny's raising them!
John McClain! I am so tired of hearing about his time in the service and being a POW. that doesn't mean he is the one to make a change in this Country. He came back, so many including my brother did not come back, I see POW's every day no legs, no arms, mental illness, etc. looking for help what is John doing for them or even mention what he will do for them. Its all about HIM. I have two Grandsons serving this Country on the battle field, so many of our young men needlessly killed, for what and yet he wants to continue?
Tell me if John could not hold his hand above his shoulder how was he able to fly a fighter jet?

My husband a 30 year retiree, purple heart, been around the world. very educated in world affairs, ex Police chief, knows more about running this Country then John or Palin.

Being a Senior Citizen I havn't heard him say what he will do concerning Medicare, health care, medicine?

All the money going for the world while ch8ildren in America and around the world are starving, so much being taken from schools, but then he doesn't have to worry about what he will eat, or where he will sleep, he has so many homes he can't remember how many. How many was offered to those who are homeless, how many homeless has John or Palin fed or cloth?
WE NEED A CHANGE!

Thank god for sarah palin she has promoted down syndrome cause big time and at the same time she has exposed Obama to be a tin man – a salesman with nothing to promote and the shallowness of u CNN – wolf blitzer was silenced by her tonight.

Who was Sarah Palin? Before, I don't know about her, when selected to be Mc Cain VP, I said to me why Mc Cain did that move, well, yesterday night at the Convention I came close to know a greate Lady, she is a beatiful, she is family oriented, articulated in her speech, inteligent, know how to deliver the message so well to the people, she was calm an in control all the time, as I watch her in the podium looking the the front, to the left an to the right while delivering those punch, hitting the adversary but not running, I concluded a new star is born in the politic of the United States an today I know why Mc Cain selected her for running for Vice President, I think she is over qualified for that position taking the back experience of Jimmy Carter or others polictic around Washington, Obama an Biden are in trouble after yesterday night presentation of this inteligent an fine Lady, the final decision is in the votes of every American we that right. Excellent speech an excellent Lady.
