HONG KONG, China - When and where? Those two questions that have dominated our day out here on one of Hong Kong's ferry piers.

Correspondent Eunice Yoon, cameraman Charlie Miller and I are waiting for the arrival of Tropical Storm Nuri. We know the storm is coming because it keeps get colder, windier and wetter (at this point we are pretty much soaked through). Yet we still don't know exactly what time it will make landfall or how close to the city.

The CNN International Weather Center sends us the latest forecasts regularly. At this point a storm we thought would arrive at 2 p.m. (6 a.m. GMT) looks more likely to show up eight hours later. And I am learning that storm watching is one of the most unpredictable assignments.

Living in Pokfulam, there is practically nothing here – just grey clouds – hardly any rain, minimal wind. Feels rather like a T1. My husband is stranded in Jakarta as all CX flights are cancelled. What time IS the storm going to hit HK?

Good Luck Hong Kong. By now – 1800 hrs BST (British Summer TIme) I hope the storm – hurricane Nuri – or do you call it a typhoon? – has weakened and gone on to dissipate over the mainland. Reports here in UK varied so I hope max wind speeds of 150 mph did not materialise or, if they did, they did not last long. We are fortunate not to have storms like this often but I did survive one in the west of England in 1967 – it took the whole of our roof with it. Then we had another one in 1987 – I drove to work in Cambridge with trees falling and debris flying past the truck. That storm did shut us down for a few days and there were fatalities all over the UK. Last summer and this one, too, we have had floods but not the strong winds you have had to put up with.

Our weather today much kinder than yours. Strong breeze from WNW, gusting force 4 to 5, occasionally 6; sky 7/10 blue with 3/10 cumulus, some towering by mid afternoon, so there will be rain / thunder during the night somewhere. A good day for me – I took the dogs along the river without the need for a coat and I managed – at last – to mow the lawn. It has been wet and warm for a week so the grass has grown fast but I haven't been able to get at it. Friday evening, so we will have curry and a beer in the garden as a reward for a busy week and for neat short grass. Two tired labradors are already fed and asleep on the grass.

I have been watching your weather becasue my daughter and her partner are satying with Hong Kong Chinese friends. They report a really happy stay so far. Today may have provided a bit too much excitment.

Best wishes and good luck, Simon Gates, Tamzin's Dad

This storm was a bit weird for the southern parts of HK Island. Nothing much until the eye had passed the city, then crazy wind and rain overnight. Now in the morning, the winds are calm again.

Short and intense compared to earlier storms.
