reporting the news isn't always about the economy or murders or government scandals. news is also about telling stories about the people. while some might find this story offensive, there are others that see it for what it is, insightful and entertaining. it shows a different side of life that many people may not see.

yes, there are many other more stories that could be reported on, both good and bad about japan, but how boring would it be if all they showed was 'news' stories about the economy or government? do you want to hear more about fukuda's resignation? sumo wrestler's smoking pot? the weather?

people want to know more about the world they live in. as a responsible news outlet, CNN understands that there is more to life than just 'news' stories and they report on a variety of different topics and try their best to be equitable to all. journalists don't take sides, they report all sides equally without prejudice.

i have never met Kyung, but i remember seeing her on the local news station here in LA. she has always been professional and reports the facts, just as any responsible journalist should.

just because you don't agree with the content, doesn't make CNN a bad news organization or Kyung a bad reporter. people make interesting stories. while some may not approve of the choice of stories, others will appreciate the diversity. in the end, they can't make everyone happy. their only responsibility is reporting the facts.

PS...we miss you in LA Kyung...

When it comes to countries in Asia CNN could fill their Asia section with, Japan just doesn't have the sorts of stories Americans are interested in reading. They'd much rather read about nuclear threats in North Korea or government crackdowns in China. Asia's a big place and Japan is not the only country in it.

i think what's offensive to most japanese and foreigners in japan is that this is one of only 2 articles about japan on cnn, a relevant and interesting piece on the trade deficit and some fluff piece on porno. wow, a country the size of california, full of awsome techno gadgets, festivals, etc, and porno is your news piece? great job, cnn. way to suck.

I think it's interesting to see how many people are upset by this story. I'm not really seeing how CNN gave Japan a bad image. It's what we call a fluff piece, meant to be mildly interesting and that's about it. If CNN wanted to give Japan a bad image, there are PLENTY of stories they could report on and they choose not too. Elderly porn is the least of Japan's problems if you could even consider it a problem to begin with.

This story is as relevant as it gets. It did not make front page news so that CNN can fill its "News About Japan" quota. CNN has front page news about Japan almost every day.

This story is about the shift of a culture as a result of demographic change. And with the United States heading down the same path with all those baby boomers retiring, this may very well spread to the U.S., if it hasn't already.

Besides, finally somebody's reporting about the lives of old people, a population that tends to be avoided by mainstream media.

I recommend you deleted or rewrite this article.
Network citizen in Japan are quite sensitive to the article in overseas like this now.
If CNN take this article up on top page without taking into consideration Japanese emotion, I can't help suspecting the quality of CNN.
