TOKYO, Japan – Occasionally as a journalist, you run across a story that leaves you gaping with surprise. Such is the case of my story on Shigeo Tokuda.

73-year-old Tokuda has chosen an unusual way to spend his retirement: starring in more than 200 porn videos. According to Ruby Productions, a company that specializes in adult movies for seniors, elderly porn is a growing genre in the adult video industry and Tokuda is its leading man. I was interested in doing the story because Japan, a nation with the world's highest percentage of people over the age of 65, was certainly finding an unusual way to meet the demands of its aging society.

I'll begin with his movies, for they're something that I truly never imagined. He is the star of his movies in every way, romancing his co-stars, no matter their age, no matter their needs. It's a little like watching your grandfather in a situation you never dared to dream. It is not easy to watch.

When we began to edit our story for broadcast on CNN, we had to go through three of his videos the production company gave us permission to air. My editor must have said "eew" a thousand times during our edit. It was a challenge finding appropriate material to air on CNN, so robust were Tokuda's scenes. One of the DVDs had zero appropriate material.

But meeting Tokuda the retiree is very different from watching Tokuda the porn star. Tokuda has been married for 44 years to the same woman (who gives her blessing to his second career) with an adult daughter he loves very much. He's a polite and humble man, saying he's glad to have some use in his later years. He said his friends are envious, because he's valued. Tokuda says, "I don't know how long I can keep living, but I want to enjoy the rest of it."

People will judge Tokuda for his unusual choice in how he's living out his retirement. But he is living fully and he seems truly happy. And while I can't say I admire his work, I can say his drive to be happy is certainly something from which to learn.

Good to see that the only story where Japan can make CNN is something of this level. Politics and the economy and the state of education, healthcare, and aged care are not important are they......?

Miriam   July 28th, 2008 1021 GMT

Lighten up. Please.

KY Xtian   July 28th, 2008 1208 GMT

Wow, gives me something to look forward to in my golden years! Definitely makes you wonder what your grandparents are doing with all their supposed spare time, doesn't it? ;-)

TexasBruiser   July 28th, 2008 1212 GMT

This is worthy of a front page tagline?!?

Lewis   July 28th, 2008 1222 GMT

Yeah, lighten up, Francis.

Ken   July 28th, 2008 1229 GMT

Wow.....this makes porn ok? This story iconizes this old man for taking part in an industry that is hurtful to women. Shame on you CNN

Louise   July 28th, 2008 1309 GMT

Athough I don't watch porn, I am a 57-year-old woman who is glad to hear about Tokuda. What delights me is that while Tokuda is elderly, he is shown in romantic and sex scenes with women of all ages.

Perhaps now the mainstream film industry will understand that romance and sex isn't something that is just for the young and spectacularly beautiful. If that were the norm, I'd go to the movies more than once a year.

I just threw up a little in my mouth!

Well, this is certainly interesting but I don't see how it is inspirational.

Was Buf., Now Was.   July 28th, 2008 1618 GMT

Gretchen, I'm with you.

Although I certainly hope I still enjoy watching attractive people do porn when I'm in my seventies... but I guess tastes change, eh? At 30, I'm definitely more discriminating in my porn tastes than when I was 15...

And as for the whole "hurtful to women" thing, listen to most any interview with a female porn star some day. These women have got it made... and they got there on purpose.

Yves   July 28th, 2008 1636 GMT

Hahaha CNN reporters are paid to survey porn movies ?

From Japan   July 28th, 2008 1713 GMT

Not all the films he does are romantic, and definitely not softcore. This was a surprising story on CNN, and a front page tagline. There are plenty of elderly people in the adult industries of AMERICA, which this could easily have been about. Why make it exclusively about Japan? It seems like it would only hurt the already bad image of Japan in global media. CNN, bad call.

helloyellow   July 28th, 2008 2000 GMT

Wow! This guy's cool.

cnnguy   July 28th, 2008 2311 GMT

I'm glad the elderly are now free to express themselves and have people of their generation in this industry.

If this can rekindle old romances–great! If this can add joy to lives of elderly people–great! I'm 27, and I have great respect for people who can see this as a positive thing. It's not my cup of tea, but hey, whatever makes you happy and keeps you healthy!

Japanese in Atlanta   July 30th, 2008 150 GMT

I am totally disappointed at CNN.

First of all, this should not be a front page tag line.
There are a lot of stories people should know about Japan.
This is totally worthless.

I am wondering if the reporter is trying to give bad image of Japan.

Shame on you, CNN!

Kent   July 30th, 2008 1545 GMT

Not mentioned in all of this is the Japanese have a specific term they use to describe a Mr. Tokuda : "Sukebe" which means dirty old man or pervert. In his case, it is not meant to be a perjorative, but rather a complimentary one describing Mr. Tokuda as rather frisky. It has contextual implications. It is rarely used in describing the woman.

joong   July 31st, 2008 1539 GMT

i think he is such a great man b/c he can deal his dream what he wants despite to his age!

2nd largest economy in the world, facing unique demographic challenges, drastic changes in culture and economy, in many ways the U.S. gateway to the Far East, and this is what makes front page on CNN?

Hey, I admit I was intrigued and read it (though I highly doubt Japan is unique in having a senior porn industry or even iconic senior porn star), but I know to look elsewhere for any meaningful coverage on Japan from a serious American perspective.

Ken   August 5th, 2008 1150 GMT

I recommend you deleted or rewrite this article.
Network citizen in Japan are quite sensitive to the article in overseas like this now.
If CNN take this article up on top page without taking into consideration Japanese emotion, I can't help suspecting the quality of CNN.

ishwar   August 5th, 2008 1211 GMT

hey who ever said that old senior citizens dont have feelings and after this they still very much want to be loved . take note.

refugeeinamerica   August 6th, 2008 727 GMT

This story is as relevant as it gets. It did not make front page news so that CNN can fill its "News About Japan" quota. CNN has front page news about Japan almost every day.

This story is about the shift of a culture as a result of demographic change. And with the United States heading down the same path with all those baby boomers retiring, this may very well spread to the U.S., if it hasn't already.

Besides, finally somebody's reporting about the lives of old people, a population that tends to be avoided by mainstream media.

from Tokyo   August 13th, 2008 218 GMT

Thanks for ruin Japan’s image CNN. Have we done something to upset you to put this article as a front-page tag? I will make sure to forward this article to my government to make a formal complain about CNN. Bakayaro!

from Kyoto   August 20th, 2008 1127 GMT

I think it's interesting to see how many people are upset by this story. I'm not really seeing how CNN gave Japan a bad image. It's what we call a fluff piece, meant to be mildly interesting and that's about it. If CNN wanted to give Japan a bad image, there are PLENTY of stories they could report on and they choose not too. Elderly porn is the least of Japan's problems if you could even consider it a problem to begin with.

debrainjapan   August 21st, 2008 1524 GMT

i think what's offensive to most japanese and foreigners in japan is that this is one of only 2 articles about japan on cnn, a relevant and interesting piece on the trade deficit and some fluff piece on porno. wow, a country the size of california, full of awsome techno gadgets, festivals, etc, and porno is your news piece? great job, cnn. way to suck.

from Sapporo   August 26th, 2008 1514 GMT

When it comes to countries in Asia CNN could fill their Asia section with, Japan just doesn't have the sorts of stories Americans are interested in reading. They'd much rather read about nuclear threats in North Korea or government crackdowns in China. Asia's a big place and Japan is not the only country in it.

Fletweaptooge   September 4th, 2008 132 GMT

i don`t understand, but TY
.

nihonjin in LA   September 11th, 2008 2216 GMT

reporting the news isn't always about the economy or murders or government scandals. news is also about telling stories about the people. while some might find this story offensive, there are others that see it for what it is, insightful and entertaining. it shows a different side of life that many people may not see.

yes, there are many other more stories that could be reported on, both good and bad about japan, but how boring would it be if all they showed was 'news' stories about the economy or government? do you want to hear more about fukuda's resignation? sumo wrestler's smoking pot? the weather?

people want to know more about the world they live in. as a responsible news outlet, CNN understands that there is more to life than just 'news' stories and they report on a variety of different topics and try their best to be equitable to all. journalists don't take sides, they report all sides equally without prejudice.

i have never met Kyung, but i remember seeing her on the local news station here in LA. she has always been professional and reports the facts, just as any responsible journalist should.

just because you don't agree with the content, doesn't make CNN a bad news organization or Kyung a bad reporter. people make interesting stories. while some may not approve of the choice of stories, others will appreciate the diversity. in the end, they can't make everyone happy. their only responsibility is reporting the facts.

PS...we miss you in LA Kyung...
