LONDON, England – Through my job in television, I’ve met and interviewed my fair share of inspirational and successful personalities, but nearly all of them were over the age of 18
Thomas Daley
Recently, however, I was sent on an assignment to help interview 13-year-old British diver, Thomas Daley. He just qualified for this summer’s Beijing Olympics, diving off the 10-meter platform, and this achievement has caused a media frenzy. I usually go to interviews with no expectations but this young man took me by surprise – mature beyond his years, confident and full of zest for the career he has chosen at such a young age, yet still acting the cool teenager who’s into regular things like music and going to the cinema. I asked him whether he liked meeting with the press and his answer was "well, it gets me out of school," which made me laugh as that’s the kind of answer I would have come up with. Thomas began diving at the age of 8 and now trains at Central Park Pool in Plymouth, UK, under the watchful eye of his coach Andy Banks. His father, Rob Daley, gave up his job to take his son around the country for diving competitions, and he certainly will be in Beijing to watch Thomas make Olympic history as he becomes Britain’s youngest male Olympian. I’m no expert on diving but it was clear to see that Thomas was brave; looking up at that 10-meter board is no thrill for people who fear heights. Every somersault he did got a "wow" from the crowd at his local pool and not a splash was made. His skills were just as good when dealing with all the reporters that were desperate to get a few minutes with Thomas. His answers to interview questions were articulate, and he told us his hopes in gaining the Olympic experience, even if he doesn’t win in Beijing. His biggest goal is to win a medal in the 2012 London Olympics. However, he surprised his coach (and the rest of the UK) by qualifying for Beijing. So, watch this space … he may come back an Olympic champ and he’ll be only 14.
Now, what was I doing when I was his age? Oh yeah, I was secretly still playing with my Barbie dolls!
